Apple TV+ is now Apple TV. Apple confirmed the streaming service’s new name in October 2025, but the rebrand does not announce a new Apple TV 4K box. It has nevertheless revived reports that Apple may update its streaming hardware in 2026. As of August 16, 2026, that hardware remains unconfirmed.
What changed: Apple TV+ became Apple TV
Apple’s subscription streaming service, previously called Apple TV+, is now marketed as Apple TV. Apple introduced the change in press material for F1 The Movie published on October 13, 2025, describing a “vibrant new identity.” The company has since used Apple TV in service, sports, and corporate communications.
The change is a rebrand of the streaming service—not proof that Apple has launched a new streaming box. Apple’s announcement is documented in its October 2025 press release.

Apple’s four different TV terms
The shared branding makes precise terminology more important:

- Apple TV: Apple’s streaming service and subscription.
- Apple TV app: The application used to browse and watch Apple programming, rentals, purchases, and other services. It is available on Apple devices, smart TVs, consoles, Roku, Fire TV, the web, and Android.
- Apple TV 4K: Apple’s physical set-top box.
- tvOS: The operating system that runs on Apple TV hardware.
Apple’s support documentation continues to identify the hardware as Apple TV 4K. Removing the “+” does not make the service free, rename the box, or include every piece of content visible in the Apple TV app. Third-party subscriptions, rentals, and purchases can still require separate payment.
Why Apple may have dropped the plus sign
Apple has not said that the rebrand was designed to prepare for new hardware. The more defensible explanation is that the shorter name fits a service whose role has expanded beyond original series and films.
Apple TV now sits alongside a growing sports portfolio, including Major League Soccer, baseball programming, and Formula 1 in the United States. Apple also expanded distribution to Android and introduced an Apple TV and Peacock bundle. Its 2025 services review connected the new identity with sports expansion, household profiles, the Android app, the Peacock bundle, and a new mnemonic created by FINNEAS.
That broader positioning gives Apple a reason to use a simpler, platform-level entertainment brand. The name is easier to say and easier to place beside major sports rights and subscription offers. But it would be too strong to claim that Apple is deliberately unifying the service, app, box, and operating system under one confirmed hardware strategy.
Why the rebrand revived Apple TV hardware rumors
The timing is interesting because the current Apple TV 4K generation dates from 2022. Reports now point to a possible 2026 refresh, potentially aimed at improving gaming, video decoding, and support for future software features.

MacRumors reports that a future model could use a newer A-series chip, possibly the A17 Pro, and might add hardware-accelerated ray tracing and AV1 video decoding. The same rumor coverage suggests that the exterior could remain close to the current black, rounded-square design.
Those details are reported expectations, not Apple specifications. Apple has not confirmed the chip, graphics features, codec support, design, price, or release date. Some reports have placed a launch after the rollout of next-generation Siri and iOS 27, potentially no earlier than September 2026, while other timing remains uncertain.

What is confirmed and what is not

The strongest connection between the rebrand and a possible box is therefore circumstantial: both fit Apple’s broader television strategy, and the existing hardware is several years old. There is no official causal link.
tvOS updates are not a new box
Apple’s software changes may also be contributing to the speculation. tvOS 26 introduced Apple’s Liquid Glass design language, a redesigned Apple TV app with more cinematic poster art, stronger content discovery, optional automatic profile display when the device wakes, and streamlined app sign-in with an Apple Account.
It also updated Apple Music Sing with iPhone and Continuity Camera features and refined controls such as sleep timers and audio adjustments. These are software improvements; they do not indicate that new Apple TV hardware has shipped.

Apple’s 2026 software announcements included tvOS 27 alongside next-generation Siri and Apple Intelligence plans. Coverage has also reported that tvOS 27 drops support for two older Apple TV models, including Apple TV HD. That may help Apple target newer Siri, gaming, or artificial-intelligence features at a more modern hardware base, but a support cutoff does not prove that a replacement box will arrive immediately. Apple sometimes ends compatibility simply to move away from older chips.

What the rebrand means for subscribers
For existing subscribers, the name change does not by itself imply a change in the subscription’s basic boundaries. Apple TV programming remains distinct from other services displayed inside the Apple TV app.
Sports availability is especially regional. Apple’s Formula 1 arrangement applies to the United States. In a March 2026 announcement, Apple listed the U.S. Apple TV subscription at $12.99 per month for F1 access at that time; prices can change, so prospective subscribers should check the live Apple TV signup page. The service’s price, sports rights, and bundle availability may differ elsewhere.
Apple and NBCUniversal also announced a U.S. Apple TV and Peacock bundle in October 2025 at launch prices of $14.99 per month for Peacock Premium or $19.99 per month for Peacock Premium Plus alongside Apple TV. Those terms may change and should not be assumed to apply in every country.

Should you buy an Apple TV 4K now or wait?
Buy now if you need a streaming box immediately
- Your television’s built-in software is slow, unreliable, or missing important apps.
- You rely on AirPlay, HomeKit, Apple Music, Apple Fitness+, or Apple Arcade.
- You want a polished Apple-centered interface and do not need rumored future gaming or AI features.
- You can find a clearly identified current model at a genuinely worthwhile discount.
Wait if the purchase is discretionary
- Your current smart-TV app, Roku, Fire TV, or console works well enough.
- Your existing Apple TV 4K is still performing reliably.
- You specifically want potentially improved gaming, AV1 decoding, next-generation Siri, or a longer support runway.
- A possible 2026 launch window is close enough that waiting would not inconvenience you.
Do not buy an old model solely because a retailer listing or rumor suggests a price drop. Confirm the generation and storage configuration, and compare the actual discount with the possibility of a newer model. Conversely, do not treat tvOS 27 compatibility changes as proof that every current Apple TV 4K is obsolete.
How Apple TV 4K compares with alternatives
The right choice depends more on ecosystem and support priorities than on the service rebrand:
- Roku: Often less expensive and platform-neutral, but less tightly integrated with Apple services and smart-home features.
- Amazon Fire TV: Frequently budget-friendly and well suited to Alexa households, with a more Amazon-centered and recommendation-heavy interface.
- Google TV: A natural fit for Google and Android households, with broad app support and Google ecosystem integration.
- Smart-TV apps: The cheapest option if your television is recent and responsive, though update policies and interface quality vary.
- Game consoles: They can replace a streaming box while adding gaming, but are larger, less convenient, and generally more power-hungry.
Apple TV 4K is most compelling for households already invested in Apple devices, AirPlay, HomeKit, Apple Music, or Apple Arcade. It is less compelling for someone seeking only the cheapest way to stream Netflix and YouTube.
The bottom line on the Apple TV rebrand
The rebrand is real: Apple TV+ is now Apple TV. It reflects a service expanding into sports, bundles, broader device support, and a more prominent entertainment identity. It does not mean Apple TV 4K hardware has been renamed, replaced, or made free.
