Apple launched its Apple TV app for Android phones, tablets, and foldables on February 12, 2025. It brought Apple’s subscription streaming catalog to Android, but it did not turn the app into an Android iTunes Store: users could not use it to rent or buy iTunes films and TV shows, and launch reporting said previously purchased iTunes videos were not available in the app.
The offer has changed since launch. For the 2026 season, MLS matches and exclusive programming are included with an Apple TV subscription rather than a separate MLS Season Pass. In the United States, the subscription also includes Formula 1 coverage. Sports, trials, prices, and features vary by region.
What launched for Android
Apple distributed the native app through Google Play for Android phones, tablets, and foldable devices. The February 2025 launch offered Apple TV+ originals and films, along with a separate MLS Season Pass. Apple also listed features familiar to streaming users: Watchlist, Continue Watching across devices, and downloads for supported Apple TV movies and shows. Apple’s launch announcement described the rollout as global, but a global app launch does not mean every subscription, sport, trial, or feature is available in every country.

The names can be confusing. Apple TV app is the Android application. Apple TV+ was the name of Apple’s subscription service at launch; Apple’s current documentation refers to the subscription as Apple TV. MLS Season Pass was a separate sports subscription in 2025. And iTunes purchases and rentals are transactional video content, not part of the subscription catalog.

The key limitation: it is not an Android iTunes library
The Android app is a subscription-streaming client, not an Android version of Apple’s full iTunes video store and library. It did not offer an iTunes storefront to buy or rent individual movies and TV episodes. Launch reporting also found that the app did not expose users’ previously purchased iTunes video libraries. Contemporary launch coverage documented that distinction.
Apple’s current support wording makes a related point: an Apple TV subscription does not include content offered for rental or purchase in the app. That does not mean an Apple Account or Apple’s subscription shows are unavailable on Android; it means a subscription should not be mistaken for access to every video you have bought from Apple. If your main reason for installing the app is to watch an existing iTunes film collection, do not assume those purchases will appear. Check Apple’s current supported ways to access purchased content before relying on an Android phone or tablet.

MLS: separate pass in 2025, included with Apple TV in 2026
At the Android app’s February 2025 launch, MLS Season Pass was a separate subscription. That arrangement ended after the 2025 season. Starting with the 2026 season, MLS matches and exclusive programming are included at no additional cost for Apple TV subscribers in supported regions; there is no separate MLS Season Pass to buy for the 2026 season. What subscribers can watch now
The core offer is Apple Originals: series, films, documentaries, and family programming. The catalog changes over time, so launch titles such as Severance, Slow Horses, The Morning Show, and Ted Lasso are examples, not a permanent or exhaustive list. Sports add-ons to the value depend on where you live:

Apple’s March 2026 announcement stated a U.S. price of $12.99 per month and a seven-day free trial for new subscribers, in connection with its U.S. Formula 1 offering. That is a U.S.-specific price and offer, not a worldwide rate. Check Apple TV’s signup page for the current offer where you are. Install, sign in, and subscribe
- Open Google Play on a compatible Android phone, tablet, or foldable and search for Apple TV. Confirm Apple is the publisher before installing.
- Open the app and sign in with the Apple Account associated with your subscription, or follow the onscreen account setup.
- To subscribe in the app, tap Apple TV at the bottom, choose the subscription or eligible trial, review the offer and billing details in Google Play, then complete the prompts. Apple provides the current steps in its Android subscription guide.
- Start watching the catalog and sports available in your region. Use downloads only for titles that offer them.
If you already pay for Apple TV through Apple, a carrier, or another provider, sign in with the account tied to that subscription rather than starting another one automatically. A subscription started through Google Play is managed and cancelled through Google Play settings; a subscription started elsewhere is generally managed through its original billing provider. Apple’s guide explains the Google Play flow. Check your existing billing before subscribing to avoid paying twice.

Downloads and progress across devices
Apple says the Android app supports offline downloads for Apple TV movies and shows, and Continue Watching can help resume viewing across devices. Downloads are subject to title, region, subscription, and licensing restrictions, so do not expect every item—especially live sports—to be downloadable. Cross-device progress is an account feature; it does not indicate that the Android app includes your iTunes purchase library.
Who should use the app?
- Good fit: Android users who want Apple Originals, an existing Apple TV subscriber who wants to watch on Android, eligible MLS viewers, or U.S. subscribers interested in the 2026 F1 coverage.
- Less suitable: Anyone whose main goal is to access an existing iTunes film collection or rent and buy individual Apple video titles on Android.
- Check first: Viewers outside the U.S. considering F1, or anyone counting on MLS, baseball, a trial, or a particular payment option. Availability varies by region.
If the app is missing from Google Play, check your country, device compatibility, and account restrictions, and make sure you are looking for Apple’s official app. Avoid installing an APK from an unknown source. Installing the app is free, but most premium viewing requires a subscription.
