Apple renamed its streaming subscription service Apple TV in October 2025. The service continues as the home of Apple Originals; the catch is that Apple TV also names the viewing app and Apple’s streaming box, so it helps to distinguish the three.
Three things now share the Apple TV name

Apple announced the service’s new name in October 2025, and its current pages use Apple TV for the subscription. The announcement presents a rebrand, not a shutdown or a separate replacement service. Apple continues to describe the service as the home of Apple Originals, with new releases arriving weekly. It does not promise that every title or feature will remain unchanged indefinitely. What does the Apple TV subscription cost?
In the United States, Apple lists the subscription at $12.99 per month, with a seven-day trial for eligible new subscribers. Offers and prices can vary by country, account, and eligibility; check the terms shown before signing up. Apple also advertises access through Apple One and the Apple Music Student Plan, subject to the applicable plan and eligibility terms. Apple’s U.S. subscription page lists the current offer.
- Apple One: Apple’s U.S. Apple TV page says Apple One plans start at $19.95 per month. Whether a bundle is worthwhile depends on which other included services you already use; its price and contents can vary by market. See Apple One.
- Apple Music Student Plan: Apple says eligible students can get Apple TV with the plan. Check current student verification requirements and local terms on Apple Music’s page.
- Apple TV 4K offer: Apple advertises three months of Apple TV with purchase of an eligible Apple TV 4K, subject to offer terms. Do not assume every purchase or buyer qualifies; check the terms at checkout.
What is included—and what may cost extra?
The subscription includes Apple Originals: series, films, documentaries, and children’s programming. Apple describes its Originals as ad-free. In the United States, Apple’s current page also lists Friday Night Baseball, MLS, and Formula 1 for the 2026 season. Sports availability and rights differ by region, so those U.S. listings should not be taken as a promise of the same coverage elsewhere.

The Apple TV app is broader than the subscription. Seeing a title or service in the app does not mean it is included in the $12.99 plan. Apple says the subscription does not include third-party subscriptions, Apple TV Channels billed separately, or movies and shows offered for rent or purchase. Check the title’s listing and price before playing or confirming a transaction. Apple explains the distinction on its Apple TV app page.
- Apple Originals included with the subscription are different from titles marked to rent or buy.
- Apple TV Channels and third-party services may require their own subscriptions.
- Some partner services or bundles have separate terms. For example, Apple’s Apple TV and Peacock bundle announcement describes a specific bundle; it does not make every service in the app part of the Apple TV subscription.
Do you need to buy an Apple TV 4K?
No. Apple says Apple Originals are available in the Apple TV app on supported devices and through the web player. You do not need Apple’s set-top box just because the service is called Apple TV. Supported devices vary by model, software, and country; check compatibility for the device and feature you want before subscribing. Apple’s Apple TV page describes viewing options.

Some sports features have more specific hardware requirements. Apple Support, for example, lists Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD with tvOS 16.2 or later for MLS on Apple TV hardware, and compatible Apple TV hardware with tvOS 26.2 or later for Formula 1. Those are requirements for the named sports features on that hardware, not a general requirement to watch Apple Originals. See Apple’s device and software guidance.
What should existing Apple TV+ subscribers do?
The name change alone is not a reason to cancel and resubscribe. Apple presents Apple TV as the continuing subscription service, rather than directing subscribers to a new service. Open the Apple TV app and sign in with the Apple Account used for the subscription. If you want to verify billing, check the subscriptions area in your device’s account settings; the exact route can differ by device and software version.

If a show appears unavailable, first confirm that you are signed into the right Apple Account and that the subscription is active. Also check whether the listing is an included Apple Original or a separately billed rental, purchase, channel, or service. The app brings those options together, but they are not one subscription.

“Apple TV+” clearly signaled a paid streaming service. “Apple TV” already named the app and the hardware, and it can also be used loosely to mean Apple’s TV platform. That makes searches and support questions ambiguous: someone asking whether they need Apple TV might mean the app, the subscription, or the box.

Apple’s public announcement establishes the new name but does not give a detailed explanation of its strategy. The practical fix is to use precise terms: Apple TV subscription for the paid service, Apple TV app for the application, and Apple TV 4K for the hardware. Use “Apple TV+” when referring to the service’s former name.

Is the subscription a good fit?
- It may suit viewers who regularly watch Apple Originals, want the U.S. sports offering advertised for 2026, or already receive the service through an eligible bundle.
- It may not suit someone mainly looking for third-party services listed in the app, or a single movie to rent; those options can be billed separately.
- Before subscribing for MLS or Formula 1, check local availability and the device requirements for the feature you plan to watch.
