If the Apple TV app will not open or play on Roku, start by restarting the Roku: press Home, then go to Settings → System → Power → System restart. If your Roku has no Power submenu, choose Settings → System → System restart. Reopen Apple TV and test a different title. This is a safe first step, not a guaranteed fix. The steps below are for the Apple TV app on Roku—not an Apple TV 4K box connected to a Roku TV.
First, narrow down what is failing
Before changing settings, try three quick checks:
- Open another streaming app on Roku. If it also fails, suspect the Roku, network, or router rather than Apple TV alone.
- Try a different movie or episode in Apple TV. If only one title fails, the issue may be specific to that title, its availability, or your access to it.
- If possible, try Apple TV on a phone, computer, or another supported device. If it fails there too, check your Apple Account, subscription, network, or Apple’s service status.
Roku recommends testing other titles and apps to help distinguish an app-specific issue from a broader playback or connection problem (Roku playback troubleshooting).
Fixes to try, in order
1. Check the Roku’s internet connection
On Roku, go to Home → Settings → Network → Check connection. You can also view connection details under Settings → Network → About.
If the connection test fails, reconnect to Wi-Fi and try another app. If several apps or household devices have trouble, restart the router and temporarily reduce heavy network use, then test Apple TV again. An unstable connection can stop apps loading or interrupt playback, but if other apps work normally, a faster internet plan is not automatically the answer. See Roku’s guidance on playback issues.

2. Restart Roku
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Go to Settings → System → Power → System restart.
- If Power is not listed, choose Settings → System → System restart.
- After Roku restarts, open Apple TV and test another title.
Roku’s Apple TV-specific troubleshooting also recommends checking the connection and restarting the device for sign-in or playback errors (Roku: Fix Apple TV errors and issues).
3. Check for an Apple TV app update
- On the Roku Home screen, highlight Apple TV without opening it.
- Press the remote’s Star button.
- Select Check for updates and let any update finish.
- Reopen the app and test playback.
4. Update Roku software
Go to Settings → System → Software update → Check now. Install any available update and follow any restart prompt. Roku’s streaming-app troubleshooting guidance includes checking both app and Roku software updates. Menu labels can vary slightly by Roku interface.
5. Remove and reinstall Apple TV
Try this only after restarting and checking for updates. Reinstalling can clear a faulty app installation, but you will likely need to sign in again.

- Highlight Apple TV on the Roku Home screen and press Star.
- Choose Remove app or Remove channel, depending on the interface, and confirm.
- Restart Roku.
- Add Apple TV again from the Roku Streaming Store, then sign in and test playback.
Removing the app does not itself cancel an Apple TV subscription. If you cannot find a subscription afterward, check which Apple Account or Roku account was used and who bills it before assuming it has ended.
Targeted fixes by symptom
Apple TV is stuck on its logo, shows a black screen, or crashes
Try the app update, Roku software update, and restart steps above. If the problem remains isolated to Apple TV while other apps work, remove and reinstall Apple TV. Roku lists updating, restarting, and reinstalling among its remedies for apps that will not load, crash, or show a black screen (Roku playback troubleshooting).
You see “Verification failed” or cannot sign in
First confirm Roku is online, restart it, reopen Apple TV, and follow the current sign-in instructions shown in the app. Check that you are entering the intended Apple Account credentials and that the relevant subscription is active. If the error persists only in Apple TV, contact Apple TV support rather than repeatedly resetting Roku. Roku also recommends checking the app account and subscription when access or sign-in problems continue (Roku app-feature troubleshooting).

You can sign in but subscription content will not play
Confirm the subscription is active and that you signed in with the account that owns it. Apple says simultaneous-streaming limits can prevent playback for Apple TV subscriptions or Apple TV Channels; stop playback on other devices and try again (Apple playback guidance). If you have purchased content or another kind of title available, testing it can help distinguish an entitlement problem from a general playback fault.

Also check who bills the subscription. A subscription purchased directly from Apple is managed differently from one billed through Roku. For a Roku-billed subscription, review Roku’s subscription information; multiple Roku accounts can also make a subscription appear to be missing (Roku: What happened to my subscription?). The Apple TV app may include access to subscriptions, channels, purchases, and rentals, but installing the app does not mean every program is included at no charge.
Only one movie, episode, or channel fails
Try another title. If the rest of Apple TV works, repeated Roku reinstalls are unlikely to address a title-specific availability, rights, or account issue. Check the title’s availability and your entitlement, then contact Apple if the problem continues.

The Apple TV app is missing from Roku search
Not every Roku streaming device supports Apple TV. Search the Roku Streaming Store and check the device model at Settings → System → About. Use Roku’s current Apple TV availability and device-support information; do not assume compatibility based only on the television brand. Availability can also depend on region and account. If Roku does not offer the app for your device, repeatedly reinstalling is not a solution.
You mean an Apple TV 4K box connected to a Roku TV
That is a different problem: the Apple TV app built into Roku and an Apple TV hardware box are separate products. If you use a box connected by HDMI, select the Roku TV’s correct HDMI input and check that the external box, cable, and connection are working.

Check for an Apple service issue
Try Apple TV on another supported device and check Apple’s live System Status page for Apple TV. If Apple TV fails across multiple devices and Apple reports an issue, wait for service to recover instead of repeatedly removing the Roku app. A live status page can change, so check it when the problem occurs rather than relying on an earlier outage report.

When to contact support—and when not to reset
- Contact Apple if other Roku apps work but Apple TV still has sign-in, subscription, catalog, or playback problems, especially if Apple TV also fails on another device. Start at Apple TV Support.
- Contact Roku if multiple apps fail, Roku cannot connect, the app is unavailable despite apparent compatibility, or the Roku itself is malfunctioning.
- Contact your internet provider if the Roku connection test fails or multiple devices at home have connection problems.
Do not factory-reset Roku as an early fix for one broken app. A reset erases device configuration and requires setup again; it is a last resort for broader, persistent Roku problems after ordinary troubleshooting. Buying another streaming device is likewise unnecessary when the rest of Roku works and only Apple TV has a fault. Consider replacement only if the device is unsupported or has persistent system-wide problems.

Does reinstalling Apple TV cancel my subscription?
