Yes—but the report was about Apple licensing some of its own movies outward, not buying more Hollywood films for Apple TV. Bloomberg reported in November 2024 that Apple had hired an executive to pursue licensing its original productions, with the reported focus on movies, foreign television networks and outlets where viewers rent or buy films. Apple has not publicly confirmed a broad licensing program, and the available evidence does not establish a rollout to rival subscription streamers as of August 16, 2026.
That distinction matters: a movie offered to a broadcaster or for rental in one country does not mean Apple has moved its whole film catalog to Netflix or another streaming service.
Two different Apple movie-licensing stories
The phrase “Apple licenses movies” can describe opposite deals. In July 2024, Bloomberg reported that Apple was discussing licensing films from Hollywood studios to add third-party titles to its own service. In November 2024, Bloomberg reported that Apple was exploring licensing its own original movies to outside outlets. Those are separate developments, not one plan. What the November 2024 report actually said
The report described Apple hiring an executive to handle licensing its original productions. Its reported focus was movies, not Apple’s original television series. Potential outlets included foreign TV networks and digital stores where customers can rent or buy films. The stated aim was to generate more sales from Apple’s film business and broaden the movies’ reach.

It did not identify a confirmed Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+ deal, nor announce a list of titles or a global release plan. The careful reading is that Apple reportedly explored selective, rights-based distribution—not that it had decided to place its entire movie catalog on competing subscription services.
Why license a film outside Apple TV?
A film can have value beyond the first place it is released. Apple Original movies can involve substantial production and marketing costs; an outside license may provide another revenue stream after an initial theatrical or Apple TV window. A broadcaster in one country or a rental-and-purchase storefront can also reach viewers who do not subscribe to Apple TV.

That is the likely commercial logic, not a published explanation of Apple’s internal calculations. Licensing could also increase awareness of a film and, indirectly, Apple’s profile. But it may reduce the exclusivity that encourages someone to subscribe, and a deal has to account for contractual rights, marketing, territory and timing.
Licensing does not necessarily mean giving up exclusivity
Film rights are not a single worldwide switch. A license can be limited to a country, a type of outlet, or a particular period. A broadcaster might receive television rights in one territory while Apple retains other rights; a rental window is different from a subscription-streaming window. Agreements can also include exclusivity, holdbacks or blackout periods.

Which rights Apple can license may vary by title. Some productions involve outside producers, distributors, financiers or talent arrangements, and theatrical distribution may be handled separately. The 2024 report did not say that every Apple Original Film was eligible, or that Apple controlled every right in every territory.
How this fits Apple’s current film strategy
Outside licensing would be one possible distribution channel alongside Apple’s existing mix of original films, theatrical releases and streaming. In June 2026, Apple executive Eddy Cue said the company would continue to send some films to theaters and others to streaming, without setting a fixed annual number of theatrical releases. He described theatrical exposure and later Apple TV availability as potentially complementary, citing F1: The Movie. Reuters’ interview with Cue reflects that continuing mixed approach.

Apple’s announced 2026 slate also includes original films such as Outcome, The Dink, Mayday, Matchbox The Movie and Way of the Warrior Kid. That slate is evidence of continued original-film activity, not proof that any particular title will be licensed elsewhere. Apple’s 2026 lineup announcement lists the titles.

What viewers should expect
There is no confirmed universal move of Apple films to rival subscription services. If Apple makes licensing deals, where a particular movie appears could depend on its rights, country and release window. Foreign TV licensing is not the same as a film being included in a competing streamer’s subscription, and a rental or purchase listing is not a subscription-streaming deal.
Apple’s current branding generally uses “Apple TV” for the service formerly widely called Apple TV+. In the United States, Apple lists the subscription at $12.99 per month after a seven-day trial. The subscription includes Apple Originals, but Apple says it does not include third-party subscription services or content separately offered for rental or purchase. Check the title and country before subscribing or paying: the app can present content beyond what the subscription itself includes, and availability changes. See Apple’s U.S. subscription details.
What remains unconfirmed
- Which specific Apple Original movies, if any, are covered by completed outward licensing deals.
- Whether any deals involve subscription streamers, as distinct from foreign broadcasters or rental-and-purchase outlets.
- Which territories, rights windows and exclusivity terms would apply.
- Whether Apple intends to extend this reported approach to original television series.
A report, an executive appointment, or a film’s temporary appearance on another outlet would not by itself establish a permanent, comprehensive policy. A named partner and documented title, territory and window would be stronger evidence. For now, the November 2024 story is best understood as Apple exploring additional ways to distribute selected movies—not Apple abandoning theatrical releases, Apple TV, or original-film production.
