Apple’s standalone iTunes Movie Trailers app and website were shut down in August 2023. Their replacement is the Apple TV app: open its Store, choose a movie, and look on the title page for a preview or trailer. The change is complete, not an upcoming switch—but trailers are not available for every title, and the interface varies by device and region.
What happened to iTunes Movie Trailers?
Apple retired the dedicated iTunes Movie Trailers experience, including its iOS app and website, and directed users to the Apple TV app instead. On August 11, 2023, reports described the move into Apple TV; by August 31, the old app and website had been disabled, and the app showed a notice with an Open button linking to Apple TV. iDownloadBlog reported on the transition, and 9to5Mac documented the shutdown and redirect.
Apple did not replace it with another standalone trailers app. Instead, trailers became part of the broader Apple TV app and its movie pages. That means the old trailer-first browsing experience is gone, even though movie previews remain available for some titles.
How to find a movie trailer in Apple TV
Start in the app’s Store, rather than limiting your search to the Home screen or subscription content. Find a movie, open its detail page, and look for a preview or trailer. Apple’s guides describe this Store-and-title-page route, but exact labels and controls differ by platform.

- iPhone or iPad: Open Apple TV, tap Store, select a movie, and check its detail page for a preview. Apple’s iPhone guide describes browsing titles and viewing information there.
- Mac: Open Apple TV, click Store in the sidebar, select a movie, then scroll down for trailers, related items, and cast and crew details. See Apple’s Mac instructions.
- Apple TV 4K: Open Apple TV, open the sidebar, choose Store, and select a movie. A preview may play in the background; Apple says the remote’s upward gesture or button can open it full screen. Scroll for additional trailers or related material. See Apple’s Apple TV 4K guide.
- Smart TVs, streaming devices, and consoles: If the Apple TV app is available, look for Store and open the movie’s detail page. The route is generally similar, but navigation and remote controls depend on the device. Apple’s Store guide notes that features and availability vary.
In 2023, the Apple TV Store was reported to include a Watch the Latest Trailers row. Do not assume that every device or region still displays a row with that exact name: Apple’s current support instructions focus on previews on individual title pages, and the available rows can change.
Do you need an Apple TV+ subscription?
No paid subscription is inherently required just to watch a movie preview. The Apple TV app is software that brings together several kinds of content, including Store titles; Apple TV is Apple’s subscription service, formerly called Apple TV+; and Apple TV 4K is streaming hardware. These are different things. Apple’s Store instructions distinguish previews from buying, renting, or subscribing.

What changed—and what is not guaranteed
The old app was built around discovering trailers. Apple TV is a broader destination for Apple Originals, movie purchases and rentals, subscription channels, integrated services, search, and playback. Trailers now sit within that larger storefront and discovery experience. Apple describes the app’s broader role in its Apple TV app overview.

Nor is a trailer guaranteed for every movie. A title page may offer a full trailer, a shorter preview, several videos, or none. Apple qualifies preview availability, and what appears can depend on the title, device, software, and country or region.
If you cannot find a trailer
- Open Store and search for the specific movie.
- Open the movie’s detail page and scroll down; do not rely only on a general trailers row.
- If the Store tab is missing, check whether your device, software version, or region supports the same Apple TV features. Some platforms support playback but not purchases, and Apple notes that availability varies by device and location.
- If a preview is present but not full screen, check the controls for your device. On Apple TV 4K, Apple documents an upward remote gesture or button for opening a background preview full screen.
- If no preview appears, it may simply not be available on Apple TV. Try the film’s official studio or distributor website, or its verified YouTube channel. Third-party film databases can help locate a trailer, but they do not guarantee an official upload or preserve Apple’s former archive.
One separate change: iTunes video apps on Apple TV hardware
The 2023 shutdown of iTunes Movie Trailers is distinct from the later consolidation of the iTunes Movies and iTunes TV Shows apps on Apple TV hardware. Apple’s tvOS update documentation says those apps were removed and their content and playback consolidated into the Apple TV app. That later change concerns watching and managing video content on Apple TV devices—not the original trailer-app shutdown.
