Apple launched Emoji Game for Apple News+ on July 17, 2025. It is a daily word-and-logic puzzle—not a standalone free game—in which players drag emoji, emoji combinations, or Genmoji into blanks to complete three short words or phrases in as few moves as possible.
The game requires an Apple News+ subscription and launched in English in the United States and for English-speaking users in Canada. Apple lists support for iPhone running iOS 18.4 or later, iPad running iPadOS 18.4 or later, and Mac running macOS Sequoia 15.4 or later.
What is Apple News+ Emoji Game?
Emoji Game is Apple’s visual take on the daily word puzzle. Instead of entering letters, you interpret emoji and place them into incomplete words or phrases. The correct meaning may be literal, associative, phonetic, or based on a group of emoji.
For example, Apple’s instructions show how a pear emoji can help complete words such as “disappear” or “fruitful.” An earth emoji can contribute to the phrase “learn the ropes.” The challenge is understanding how the image connects to the answer, rather than simply naming what appears on screen.

Each puzzle contains three short phrases. The objective is to complete all three while making as few moves as possible.
How to play Emoji Game
- Open the News app.
- Open an Emoji Game puzzle in the Apple News+ puzzle area.
- Review the incomplete words or phrases and the available emoji.
- Drag an emoji or emoji group into the appropriate blank.
- Use a clue if you cannot determine an answer.
- Finish all three phrases with the lowest practical move count.
For the built-in tutorial, open the puzzle’s More menu and select How to Play. To browse additional puzzles, choose More Puzzles. Apple also announced an archive of earlier puzzles at launch.
The game may include ordinary emoji, combinations of emoji, and Genmoji created with Apple Intelligence. Genmoji is an optional part of the available selection, not a requirement for playing Emoji Game.

- Attempting an answer.
- Expanding a clue.
That means a clue can save time and prevent a wrong placement, but it also increases the final move total. If you are competing for a strong result, inspect the phrase, consider alternate meanings, and use a clue only when it is likely to be more efficient than guessing.
The Reveal option has a more significant consequence. Revealing the answers lets you see the remaining solutions, but Apple says that puzzle will not count toward scoreboard statistics or streaks.
A completed puzzle, a personal move count, a streak, and a Game Center leaderboard result are therefore not exactly the same thing. You can share results through Messages, Mail, social media, or other platforms, while Game Center provides the competitive leaderboard layer. Availability of sharing and leaderboard features can vary by region, device, or account setup.

Emoji Game is built into Apple News+; it is not a separate App Store download. The current U.S. Apple News App Store listing continues to identify Emoji Game among Apple News+’s exclusive daily puzzles, alongside Crossword, Mini Crossword, Quartiles, and Sudoku.

Apple said the game would also become available through the Apple Games app in fall 2025. The available documentation does not independently confirm its current placement there, so the News app remains the dependable route described by Apple’s support instructions.

These are the minimum launch compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that every device capable of running a newer operating system has access to Apple News+. The Apple News Emoji Game page also specifies the News app and the same minimum operating-system versions.
Is Emoji Game free?
No. Emoji Game is an Apple News+ subscriber benefit. There is no separate per-game purchase, but an active Apple News+ subscription is required.
Apple’s July 17, 2025 launch announcement listed Apple News+ at $12.99 per month in the United States, £12.99 in the United Kingdom, $16.99 in Canada, and $19.99 in Australia. Those were launch-era prices and should not be treated as confirmed September 2026 checkout prices. Check the subscription screen for the current price in your country.

The subscription bundles Emoji Game with premium publications, recipes, offline access, Family Sharing, and other daily puzzles. It makes more sense as a package than as a purchase made solely for one short emoji puzzle.
Availability by country and language
At launch, Apple offered Emoji Game in English in the United States and to English-speaking Apple News+ subscribers in Canada. Apple’s support documentation warns that Apple News, Apple News+, and its puzzles are not available in every country or region.
If you are outside those launch markets, do not assume that having a compatible iPhone or an Apple News app means the puzzle is available. Regional Apple News+ availability and the language of the puzzle both matter.
How Emoji Game compares with other daily puzzles
Emoji Game has the daily habit of a Wordle-style puzzle, but its mechanics are different: you solve visual wordplay by placing emoji rather than deducing a sequence of letters.

- Compared with crosswords: Emoji Game is shorter and more accessible, but offers less of the layered clue-solving depth that traditional crossword players may prefer.
- Compared with Quartiles: Both involve constructing or recognizing words, but Emoji Game adds visual association and phrase completion.
- Compared with Sudoku: Emoji Game depends heavily on language and cultural associations, while Sudoku is based on numerical logic.
Its main learning curve is that emoji meanings are flexible. An image may stand for its name, a related idea, a sound, a word fragment, or a collective meaning. Several fish, for instance, may suggest a “school” rather than simply “fish.”
What to do if Emoji Game does not appear
- Check your subscription: Confirm that Apple News+ is active, rather than assuming the News app alone provides access.
- Check the operating system: Update to at least iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, or macOS Sequoia 15.4, depending on the device.
- Check your region: Apple News+ and its puzzles are not offered everywhere.
- Check the app: Make sure the News app is installed and open its puzzle area instead of searching the App Store for a separate Emoji Game app.
- Check the Apple Account: Make sure the News app is signed in to the Apple Account associated with the Apple News+ subscription.
Apple’s Emoji Game support guide provides the current user-facing instructions, including the clue, Reveal, tutorial, and puzzle-browsing controls.
Is Apple News+ worth subscribing to for Emoji Game?
For an existing Apple News+ subscriber, Emoji Game is a useful addition: it is quick to learn, supports daily play, and adds a visual and social alternative to Apple’s crossword, Quartiles, and Sudoku offerings.
For someone interested only in Emoji Game, the value is much weaker. The puzzle is brief, subscription-locked, language-dependent, and region-limited. The sensible decision is to judge the entire Apple News+ bundle—publications, recipes, offline reading, Family Sharing, and its other puzzles—rather than treating Emoji Game as a separately priced game.
Although the headline may make Emoji Game sound newly launched, the documented launch date was July 17, 2025. It remains listed as part of Apple News+’s puzzle lineup, subject to Apple’s current regional and subscription requirements.
