Apple Music’s official browser player launched as a public beta on September 5, 2019, at beta.music.apple.com. It left beta on April 17, 2020, and remains available at music.apple.com. Today, subscribers can stream Apple Music, browse recommendations and radio, use playlists, view lyrics, and access their library without installing the native app—although the browser version does not replace every app feature.
Apple Music’s browser-player timeline

The important distinction is between the beta launch and the later 正式 web release. Contemporary reporting from TechCrunch dates the public beta to September 5, 2019, while its April 2020 report records the transition to the non-beta website.
It is more accurate to call September 2019 Apple Music’s first official full web-service beta than to claim the company had never offered any browser-based Apple Music experience before then. Limited web access and unofficial alternatives existed, but the 2019 release was the major official browser version.

What launched in September 2019?
Apple did not simply publish song previews or a promotional catalogue. Existing Apple Music subscribers could sign in and use a browser-based version of the streaming service.

The initial beta included:
- Search across Apple Music’s catalogue.
- Playback of catalogue tracks.
- Access to a user’s synced library when Sync Library was enabled.
- Playlists and saved music.
- Library, Search, For You, Browse, and Radio sections.
- Personalized recommendations and editorial content.
At launch, the service was aimed primarily at people who already had an Apple Music subscription. New users could not initially complete the entire subscription process through the beta website and were directed to subscribe elsewhere. Apple also described the product as a beta, meaning bugs, unfinished features, and differences from the native apps were expected.
Why Apple Music needed a web player
The browser version closed a significant platform gap. Before it appeared, Apple Music users generally relied on an iPhone, Android app, macOS Music app, or Windows software. A web player was particularly useful for:
- Windows users who preferred not to install or maintain desktop software.
- Linux and ChromeOS users, for whom Apple’s native options were more limited.
- Shared or managed computers where installing applications was restricted.
- Temporary devices such as hotel, school, library, or work computers.
- Users moving between operating systems who wanted the same account and library in a browser.
The timing also mattered. Apple was moving away from iTunes on the Mac, while competitors such as Spotify already had established web players. Apple Music on the web made the service more competitive and reduced the need to treat Apple software as the only route to playback. MacRumors’ launch coverage placed the release in that broader platform context.

Apple’s current web guide describes a substantially broader browser experience than the original beta. Depending on the account, browser, device, and region, users can:

- Open and manage their music library.
- Browse recommendations and editorial sections.
- Listen to radio.
- View lyrics.
- Create, edit, and delete playlists.
- Add or delete music.
- Favorite and pin items.
- Manage the playback queue.
- Use shuffle, repeat, and Autoplay.
- Use a browser MiniPlayer.
- Join some SharePlay and collaborative playback experiences where supported.
These are documented web capabilities, not a promise that every function behaves identically in every native app. Apple cautions that features and content vary by country or region.
How to use Apple Music without installing an app
- Open music.apple.com.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for Apple Music.
- Search for an artist, album, song, playlist, or radio station.
- Select content to begin playback.
- Use the site’s navigation to open Library, Browse, Radio, recommendations, and playlists.
Full on-demand playback still requires eligible Apple Music access, such as an active subscription or trial. The website is an access method, not a separate free subscription tier.
Using the MiniPlayer
Apple’s documented MiniPlayer workflow is:
- Start playing a song, album, playlist, radio stream, or library item at
music.apple.com. - Click the album artwork at the top of the window to open the full-screen player.
- Reduce the browser window’s width until the MiniPlayer appears.
- Use its controls for playback, lyrics, Up Next, Autoplay, and other actions.
- To leave MiniPlayer mode, use its Close control and enlarge the window again.

The browser is best understood as a convenient, cross-platform listening option—not a complete replacement for every native workflow. Offline downloads, local-file management, and some device-level controls are associated primarily with the apps. Browser support can also vary by browser engine, permissions, account state, and region.

Apple has not established a universal promise that lossless audio, Spatial Audio, codecs, or every advanced playback mode works identically in every browser. Those capabilities should not be assumed simply because ordinary streaming works on the website.
Common problems and practical fixes
The site plays previews instead of full songs
Check that you are signed in with the correct Apple Account and that the account has active Apple Music access. A particular track may also be unavailable in your region, or the browser may not be retaining the session.
- Sign out and sign in again.
- Reload the page.
- Allow cookies and local storage for Apple Music.
- Try another browser.
- Test a different song or album to determine whether the issue affects one item or the whole service.
- Use the native app if the required feature is unavailable on the web.
Apple’s Apple Music web privacy notice explains that browser identifiers, cookies, and local storage can affect sign-in persistence and how the player operates.
The browser keeps opening the Music or iTunes app
Some operating systems associate Apple Music links with an installed Music or iTunes application. In that case, the browser may offer the app as an alternative. Opening music.apple.com directly is the normal route to the web player, but the operating system may still suggest the native application.

The library is incomplete
Library visibility depends on account state and synchronization. The original web beta specifically tied library access to Sync Library. The browser should not be expected to display every device-specific local file or every item managed only on one computer. Confirm that you are using the same account and that library synchronization is enabled where applicable.
A feature exists in the app but not on the website
That is generally a feature-parity limitation, not evidence that Apple has discontinued the web player. Apple documents the web experience separately and notes that features and content vary by country or region.

Consumers use music.apple.com to listen to Apple Music in a browser. Developers use MusicKit on the Web to add Apple Music playback to their own websites through Apple Music Web Components or a customized JavaScript player.
Those products are related but distinct. A listener who simply wants to stream music does not need MusicKit. A publisher, artist, app developer, or music service that wants an embedded or customized player may need Apple’s developer platform instead.

Who should use the browser player?
Apple Music on the web is especially useful when software installation is inconvenient or impossible. It suits Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS users, people on managed computers, and anyone who wants to keep a pinned browser tab or browser-installed web app open.
The native app remains the stronger choice for offline listening, local-file management, deeper device integration, and any feature that Apple has not brought to the web version. Availability also depends on the user’s country, account, browser, cookies, local storage, and the licensing of individual content.
What Apple’s 2019 launch ultimately changed
The 2019 beta was not a short-lived experiment. It became the foundation for the current Apple Music web service. The historical sequence matters: Apple introduced a full browser experience on September 5, 2019, removed the beta label on April 17, 2020, and continues to support browser playback today.
