Apple’s current Apple Music app for Windows includes Dolby Atmos playback controls. To use them, sign in with an Apple Music subscription, update the app, and choose Sidebar Actions → Settings → Playback → Dolby Atmos. Apple’s Windows-specific instructions were published on April 17, 2025; they confirm the feature, but not that every Windows PC or audio connection will deliver the same Atmos experience.

What Apple Music’s Windows support means

This is support in the Apple Music app itself: its Playback settings include Dolby Atmos choices, and Apple provides Windows-specific instructions for listening to supported songs. It is not a guarantee that every Windows computer sends a discrete, untouched Atmos bitstream to every connected device.

“Dolby Atmos” can describe different parts of an audio chain. Apple Music provides an Atmos music mix; Windows may apply spatial-audio processing or render audio for headphones; and an HDMI-connected receiver or soundbar may decode an Atmos-compatible signal. Which path is used depends on the app, Windows settings, drivers, connection, and receiving hardware. Microsoft documents Windows spatial-audio paths for headphones and HDMI home theater, but that does not establish the signal format for every Apple Music setup. Microsoft’s Windows spatial-sound documentation describes those paths.

Apple’s current guidance confirms the feature without naming the app build that introduced it or documenting a formal launch announcement. It applies to the dedicated Apple Music app; the available documentation does not establish that the legacy iTunes app has the same control. Apple’s Dolby Atmos instructions are dated April 17, 2025.

What you need

  • The dedicated Apple Music app for Windows. Apple distributes it through the Microsoft Store. Apple’s Windows app download information distinguishes its newer apps from iTunes.
  • An Apple Music subscription. Apple says the Dolby Atmos setting is available only to subscribers signed in to the app. The app download itself is free, but that does not include the subscription catalog. Apple’s Windows user guide lists the subscriber requirement.
  • A song or album with an Atmos mix. Not every Apple Music track is available in Dolby Atmos.
  • A suitable output path. Headphones, PC speakers, and HDMI home-theater equipment may use different rendering paths. Apple advises Windows users to check hardware requirements with their PC manufacturer; Dolby Access may be required for some configurations. Apple’s support instructions explain the Windows requirement.
  • Availability in your country or region. Apple notes that Dolby Atmos availability varies by region. Check Apple’s Windows guide for the setting and availability qualification.

Update Apple Music before troubleshooting. To check for app updates, open the Microsoft Store and use its app-update controls; Apple provides instructions for checking updates to Microsoft Store apps.

How to turn on Dolby Atmos

  1. Open the Apple Music app on Windows and sign in to your Apple Music subscription.
  2. At the top of the sidebar, select Sidebar Actions.
  3. Choose Settings, then open Playback.
  4. Find the Dolby Atmos menu and choose Automatic, Always On, or Off.

Apple documents this path and these three choices in its Windows user guide. Automatic is the sensible starting point for most people: Apple Music selects Atmos when it recognizes a compatible output. Always On is useful for testing Atmos when automatic detection does not appear to work, especially with headphones, though the actual rendering still depends on the Windows output path. Off selects stereo and is useful for comparison or troubleshooting.

How to tell whether Atmos is playing

  1. Choose a track or album marked with the Dolby Atmos badge in Apple Music.
  2. Start playback and look for the Atmos indicator in the app’s playback controls.
  3. If you are using HDMI to a soundbar or receiver, check its incoming-format display. That is a more useful check of what the device is receiving than an app badge alone.
  4. For comparison, switch Dolby Atmos to Off and play the same material again. Apple says a downloaded Atmos version is accompanied by a stereo version, and turning Atmos off plays stereo. Apple explains the downloaded-version behavior here.

An Atmos badge identifies available Atmos content; it does not prove that a receiver is receiving a raw Atmos bitstream. Windows, audio drivers, HDMI negotiation, and the receiver’s configuration can change the final output.

What the settings mean for headphones and home theater

Headphones

Atmos through headphones is a rendered spatial presentation, not the same thing as sending discrete speaker channels to a theater system. Apple says compatible Apple or Beats headphones and many Bluetooth headphones can play Atmos automatically when available, while its Windows app also offers Always On. The result depends on the device and software path; ordinary headphones do not become physical Atmos speakers. Bluetooth’s limitations for lossless audio are a separate issue and do not, by themselves, mean Atmos playback is impossible over Bluetooth. Apple’s Apple Music page describes headphone availability, and Apple’s lossless guidance covers Bluetooth and lossless audio.

Built-in PC speakers

Some PCs offer spatial-audio processing through their built-in speakers, but laptop speakers should not be assumed to reproduce discrete, theater-style Atmos. Apple recommends checking the computer manufacturer’s requirements for Windows playback. Apple’s Windows support page provides that guidance.

HDMI home theater

For a TV, soundbar, or AV receiver, HDMI is the relevant home-theater path to configure. Select the correct Windows output device and, where available, the Dolby Atmos home-theater spatial-audio mode; configure the receiver or soundbar to accept the incoming format. Microsoft says selecting Dolby Atmos for home theater over HDMI may prompt installation of Dolby Access if it is not already installed. Microsoft documents Windows spatial-audio and HDMI support.

Do not assume that an Atmos label in Windows means the receiver is receiving Atmos. Check the receiver or soundbar’s input-format display. Optical/SPDIF is not established by the available official documentation as a reliable Apple Music Windows Atmos route; for home theater, use HDMI and verify the receiving device.

Dolby Atmos and Lossless are separate settings

Apple Music’s Windows Playback settings list Lossless audio, streaming and download quality, and Dolby Atmos separately. Atmos is a spatial mix and playback path; Lossless describes audio encoding quality. Turning on the highest lossless option does not ensure Atmos playback, and enabling Atmos does not guarantee lossless delivery for every track or output.

For lossless playback, Apple documents Windows options up to 24-bit/48 kHz for Lossless and 24-bit/192 kHz for Hi-Res Lossless; an external DAC is needed for sample rates above 48 kHz. Those limits concern lossless audio, not an Atmos guarantee. Apple’s lossless support page covers Windows settings and the DAC requirement.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The Dolby Atmos setting is missing

  • Confirm that you are signed in to an Apple Music subscription; Apple restricts the setting to subscribers.
  • Update the dedicated Apple Music app through the Microsoft Store, then close and reopen it.
  • Confirm you are using Apple Music rather than legacy iTunes. Apple’s Windows app information explains the dedicated app and iTunes distinction.
  • Check regional availability; Apple says it varies by country or region.
  • If it still does not appear, restart Windows and reopen Apple Music.

The app shows Atmos, but the receiver reports stereo

  • Confirm that Apple Music is using the intended HDMI output device.
  • Check the Windows spatial-audio selection and the receiver or soundbar’s input mode.
  • Check the HDMI connection and whether an intervening TV is passing audio through in the expected format.
  • Update the PC’s audio and graphics drivers, then restart playback.
  • Use the receiver’s incoming-format display to distinguish an app content label from the format reaching the home theater.

Windows supports Atmos home theater over HDMI, but the selected output and spatial-audio implementation still matter. Microsoft’s documentation describes the Windows side of that setup.

There is no sound or playback becomes distorted

  1. Set Apple Music Dolby Atmos to Off and restart playback.
  2. Change it to Automatic and try again.
  3. Re-select the desired Windows output device and restart Apple Music.
  4. Update audio, graphics, and HDMI drivers, then test another Atmos-marked track.
  5. Test stereo playback to see whether the fault is specific to the Atmos path.

A downloaded track plays in stereo

Check the Dolby Atmos setting before deleting or downloading the track again. Apple says a downloaded Atmos version comes with a stereo version, and setting Atmos to Off plays stereo. Apple’s support instructions describe this behavior.

Which setting should you choose?

  • Automatic: Start here if you switch among headphones, PC speakers, and HDMI devices or are unsure how Windows identifies your output.
  • Always On: Try it when a supported Atmos track does not appear to use Atmos under Automatic, particularly for a headphone listening test.
  • Off: Use it if you prefer the stereo mix, want to compare versions, or are isolating an Atmos-specific playback problem.

Dolby Access is conditional, not a universal purchase requirement: Apple says it may be needed depending on the PC, and Microsoft describes it as a possible prompt when configuring HDMI home theater. Follow the hardware maker’s guidance if Windows does not expose the required output mode.
