This was an update to TikTok.com—not the launch of a downloadable Windows or Mac app. TikTok said the new web experience was available globally at announcement, and specifically named Google Chrome for the Floating Player.
What TikTok launched—and what it did not
TikTok’s announcement describes a redesigned web experience at TikTok.com, not a separate native desktop application. The update was intended to bring more of TikTok’s browsing and viewing experience to larger screens while complementing its mobile-first product.
TikTok said the updated experience was available globally on February 27, 2025. That launch statement does not establish that every feature appears for every account or that the interface has remained unchanged since then.
What the Floating Player does
The web-exclusive Floating Player is designed to keep TikTok visible above other windows, so a viewer can continue watching while working in another application. It is useful for a livestream or video that does not need the full screen, though it trades an immersive view for multitasking.

TikTok specifically announced the player for desktop use through Google Chrome. The announcement does not establish support in Safari, Firefox, Edge or other browsers, and it does not document a precise activation button or controls. It should not be assumed to behave exactly like another service’s picture-in-picture mode.

A modular layout and refreshed For You feed
TikTok said the redesigned web experience has a modular layout, repositioned navigation and fewer distractions. The For You feed was refreshed to make browsing feel more consistent with TikTok on mobile. The announcement describes a presentation update, not a new recommendation algorithm.

A dedicated Explore tab
The new Explore destination gives desktop visitors another place to discover content beyond the For You feed. TikTok’s announcement does not specify a new ranking system or promise particular categories or results there.
Full-screen LIVE and landscape gaming streams
The update supports more immersive full-screen LIVE viewing on desktop. TikTok also said creators can stream in portrait or landscape orientation, allowing gaming livestreams to use a horizontal, full-screen presentation for desktop viewers. Mobile viewers can rotate their devices to match the orientation. This announcement concerns LIVE; it does not establish that ordinary feed videos have changed to landscape format.

Collections for saved videos
Collections let users group favorite videos into custom categories, making saved content easier to revisit. This is user-side organization of favorites; TikTok’s announcement does not describe it as a replacement for creator Playlists or a browser bookmarking system. It also does not spell out synchronization rules or limits across devices.
How to access the desktop experience
- Open TikTok.com in a desktop browser.
- Sign in if TikTok requires it for the feature you want to use.
- For the Floating Player, try Google Chrome, the browser TikTok named in its announcement.
- Explore the site’s navigation and video controls for the updated feed, Explore, Collections and player options. Labels and placement may differ from the February 2025 launch interface.
TikTok’s announcement confirms the feature and browser qualification but does not provide a current, control-by-control activation guide.

If the Floating Player does not appear
- Confirm that you are using the desktop site rather than a mobile page or narrow mobile-style view.
- Try Google Chrome; support for other browsers is not established by TikTok’s announcement.
- Sign in if the relevant control or saved-video feature requires an account.
- Refresh TikTok.com and make sure Chrome is up to date.
- Temporarily disable extensions that may interfere with video playback, pop-ups or window controls.
- Try a standard TikTok video. The announcement does not promise identical controls for every video, LIVE, advertisement or embedded player.
If the control is still absent, account, browser, rollout or interface variation may be involved; its absence alone does not show that TikTok never launched the feature.

Desktop is a natural fit for viewers already at a computer, people who want a larger display, and audiences watching gaming livestreams. Mobile remains the more natural choice for vertical swipe browsing, watching away from a desk, and phone-centered creation. Neither is universally better: the redesign extends desktop viewing rather than replacing the mobile app.

What the update may mean for creators
A clearer desktop destination could make profiles, videos and livestreams more usable for people who follow links from a computer. Landscape LIVE may also suit gaming and other streams that benefit from a horizontal frame. These are practical possibilities, not measured outcomes: TikTok’s announcement provides no figures showing increased desktop traffic, watch time, engagement, earnings or creator growth.
TikTok also continues to offer browser-based creator tools, including uploads, analytics and content management. Availability can vary by region and experience, as described in its creator-tools help page. Those tools are separate from the desktop viewing redesign.
