Genius Shuffle is a library-based feature documented in the Music app for Mac and iTunes for Windows. It picks a song from your library, then plays other songs Genius considers a good match. It is not the same as ordinary Shuffle, AutoPlay, or a radio-style station—and Apple’s current mobile instructions do not show a Genius Shuffle control for iPhone, iPad, or Android.
If you are looking for the feature on a phone, use AutoPlay or a station instead. On a supported desktop app, enable Genius and choose Controls > Genius Shuffle.
What Genius Shuffle does
Genius Shuffle starts with a song selected from your music library and follows it with songs Apple’s Genius system considers compatible. Apple describes the matches as songs that “go well” together; it does not publish a detailed formula for how it calculates compatibility.
This is a related sequence, not a random reordering of the queue and not a guarantee of continuous discovery from the entire Apple Music catalog. Results depend on the music in your library and whether Genius has matching information for it. Apple’s Mac guide describes Genius data as drawing on anonymous information about your library and other Music libraries, as well as information from the iTunes Store.

Apple’s Genius feature is unrelated to Genius.com, the lyrics-annotation website.

Turn on Genius and start it on Mac
Before using Genius, the Mac needs an internet connection, an Apple Account, and a library with enough songs to generate complementary matches. Apple does not specify a minimum library size, and not every song is guaranteed to have Genius suggestions.
- Open the Music app.
- Choose File > Library > Turn On Genius if Genius is not already enabled.
- Choose Controls > Genius Shuffle. Music selects a library song and begins playing compatible tracks.
- Choose Controls > Genius Shuffle again to change the selection.
If the Genius Shuffle button appears in playback controls, Apple also documents holding Option while clicking it during playback. Genius data updates periodically while Music is open; to request an update, choose File > Library > Update Genius.

Use Genius Shuffle in iTunes for Windows
These steps apply to iTunes for PC, which is the Windows app covered by Apple’s Genius instructions—not necessarily the newer Apple Music app for Windows. You need an internet connection, an Apple Account, and enough music in the library for matching.
- Open iTunes.
- Choose File > Library > Turn On Genius if Genius is not enabled.
- Choose Controls > Genius Shuffle to begin.
- Choose Controls > Genius Shuffle again to get a different selection.
If the Genius Shuffle control is visible during playback, hold Control while clicking it. To update Genius data manually, choose File > Library > Update Genius.

Create a Genius Playlist
A Genius Playlist is a finite playlist based on a song you choose, rather than a hands-off sequence that selects its own starting track. It is built from music in your library; an Apple Music subscription alone does not mean every catalog track is eligible.
- In Music on Mac or iTunes for Windows, select a song in your library.
- Choose File > New > Genius Playlist.
- Use the song-count control to change the playlist’s maximum length.
- Select Refresh to generate a different set around the same starting song.
On Mac, Apple’s instructions specify selecting Songs in the sidebar before choosing the track. In iTunes, select Music in the media selector if needed. iTunes for Windows also documents Genius Mixes in the sidebar; Apple’s cited current Mac Genius page does not list that feature.

Apple’s mobile playback guide covers ordinary Shuffle and AutoPlay. Its Apple Music page describes personalized recommendations and discovery across supported devices. These features are alternatives, not other names for Genius Shuffle.
Why Genius Shuffle may be missing or return no useful matches
- You are using a phone or tablet. Apple’s current mobile guide does not document a Genius Shuffle control. Use AutoPlay, ordinary Shuffle, or a station.
- You are in the wrong Windows app. The documented path is for iTunes for PC. The cited instructions do not confirm that the standalone Apple Music for Windows app has the same controls.
- Genius is off. On Mac or in iTunes for PC, use File > Library > Turn On Genius.
- The computer is offline or not signed in. Genius requires an internet connection and an Apple Account.
- The library is too small or the track lacks suggestions. Apple requires enough songs for a complementary sequence but gives no minimum number; it also does not promise matches for every song.
- The library is synced across devices. Apple says Genius cannot be turned off when the library is synced across multiple devices.
If Genius is enabled but a result is empty or unhelpful, try File > Library > Update Genius, then choose another seed song or refresh a Genius Playlist. A small or narrowly focused library, duplicates, alternate versions, or inconsistent track details are plausible reasons for repetitive matches, but Apple does not identify them as specific Genius error causes. Adding representative music and correcting library details may help; use AutoPlay or a station if the goal is new-catalog discovery.
Mobile alternatives and choosing the right one
- Choose ordinary Shuffle to randomize a playlist or album you already selected.
- Choose AutoPlay to continue with related tracks after the current queue.
- Choose a song station or personalized recommendations when you want music beyond your existing library.
On iPhone or Android, Apple says Shuffle and Repeat controls can be inactive while AutoPlay is enabled. Open the player, tap Up Next, turn off AutoPlay if needed, then use Shuffle. See Apple’s mobile playback instructions.
