Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRoku TV usually has no Hulu-specific “Clear cache” button. The quickest safe equivalent is a Roku system restart. If Hulu still misbehaves, check for updates, then remove and reinstall the app. Menu names can vary by Roku OS version, TV manufacturer, and model.
Before you start
- Keep your Roku remote handy and make sure the TV is connected to power.
- If you may reinstall Hulu, have your Hulu sign-in details available. You may need to sign in again afterward.
- If Hulu is billed through Roku, removing its app is separate from canceling the subscription; billing arrangements can also affect whether the removal option appears.
Unlike Android, Roku TV generally does not offer a Settings > Apps > Hulu > Clear cache control. Roku’s guidance says cached app data is emptied when the device powers down, so a proper system restart is the least disruptive refresh. This does not mean every kind of Hulu data or every playback problem will be fixed. Roku explains app caching and power-down behavior.
Restart the Roku TV first
- Press Home on the Roku remote.
- Open Settings > System > Power > System restart. If there is no Power submenu, use Settings > System > System restart.
- Choose Restart or confirm the prompt, then open Hulu after the TV starts again.
If the menus are unavailable, unplug the Roku TV from power for at least 10 seconds, then reconnect it. A normal press of the TV’s power button may put the screen into standby rather than perform a system restart. See Roku’s system restart instructions.
Restart Hulu from the Home screen
If the Roku interface offers an app restart option, it can be a quick app-level step before restarting the whole TV:

Check for Roku and Hulu updates
Update Roku software
- Press Home.
- Go to Settings > System > Software update.
- Select Check now and follow any on-screen prompt.
Roku devices normally check for updates automatically, but a manual check can help if the device has been offline or Hulu has recently been installed. The update screen shows software/build information and the last update time. See Roku’s software update instructions.

Check Hulu for an update
- Return to the Home screen and highlight Hulu.
- Press Star (*).
- Select Check for updates, if shown.
Roku recommends checking app updates when an app will not open or shows a black screen. See its playback troubleshooting guidance.
Remove and reinstall Hulu for an app-specific reset
If restarting and updating have not helped, removing and adding Hulu again is Roku’s recommended next step for an app that will not load. It can refresh or remove locally stored app data, but it is more disruptive than restarting and may require you to sign in again.

Roku recommends removing and reinstalling a malfunctioning app; see playback troubleshooting, app-feature troubleshooting, and app removal instructions. Roku also documents app management in its mobile app guide.
If “Remove app” does not appear
- Look for Remove channel; some Roku screens use that label instead.
- Confirm Hulu is highlighted on the Home screen before pressing Star.
- An active Roku-billed subscription or billing-cycle condition may affect app removal. Manage billing separately; uninstalling the app is not subscription cancellation. Roku explains removal restrictions in its app removal guidance.
- If the option remains missing, restart the TV and check again. The Roku mobile app can also manage apps, as described in Roku’s mobile app instructions.
Diagnose buffering, freezing, or a black screen
Cache is only one possible factor. Use the pattern of the failure to decide whether to keep troubleshooting Hulu or look elsewhere:

| What you see | What to test next |
|---|---|
| One Hulu title fails | Try another title. A single-title problem may be content-specific or service-side. |
| All Hulu titles fail, but other apps work | Restart, update, and, if needed, reinstall Hulu. |
| Several streaming apps fail or buffer | Run Roku’s network connection test, check for congestion, and restart the router if other devices or services are affected. |
| Hulu fails on multiple devices | Check the Hulu account, service availability, and network conditions rather than treating it as a Roku cache issue. |
| “Insufficient memory” or a can’t-run-app error appears | Restart first; if it persists, remove unused apps. Roku treats low-memory errors separately from ordinary app-cache issues. |
| Hulu is missing from the Streaming Store | Check current app availability for your Roku device; availability can change and should not be assumed for every model. |
Roku recommends testing other content and considering service interruptions, network quality, and app issues separately. For network checks, see Roku’s playback help, Hulu’s connection test, internet troubleshooting, and buffering help. For memory errors, consult Roku’s can’t-run-app guidance. If Hulu is absent, see Roku’s missing-app guidance.
- Test another Hulu program and another streaming app.
- Run the Roku network connection test; if multiple devices or apps are affected, restart the router and reduce competing network traffic.
- Where supported, try a wired connection, or test Hulu again later to distinguish local connection trouble from a service interruption.
When to contact Hulu or Roku
- Contact Hulu if Hulu alone still fails after reinstalling, you cannot sign in, playback fails across devices, or the problem appears tied to your account, subscription, or location. Use Hulu support.
- Contact Roku if multiple Roku apps fail, the TV freezes or restarts, memory errors persist, or software updates or app installation fail. Roku’s troubleshooting hub covers players, TVs, remotes, and audio.
Factory reset is a last resort
A factory reset is not a routine cache-clearing method and is excessive for an isolated Hulu problem. It erases apps, account information, preferences, and settings, after which you must complete guided setup, reconnect to your network, access your Roku account, and sign in to streaming apps again. Consider it only if the Roku TV itself remains broadly unstable after other troubleshooting. Follow Roku’s factory reset instructions if you decide it is necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I clear Hulu cache without deleting the app?
There is generally no dedicated Hulu cache control on Roku TV. Use a Roku system restart as the least disruptive refresh.
Does restarting Roku sign me out of Hulu?
A system restart does not erase Roku settings. If you are prompted to sign in afterward, follow the app’s prompt.
Will reinstalling Hulu cancel my subscription?
No. Removing the app and canceling a subscription are separate actions; manage a Roku-billed subscription through its billing controls.
Do Roku TV and Roku Streaming Stick use the same restart steps?
The menu labels may differ by Roku model and OS version. Roku’s restart guidance includes device-specific instructions.
