Apple Music has a dedicated Windows app available through the Microsoft Store. Use it to stream and download music, manage playlists, and sync your library; use Apple Devices for iPhone or iPad backups and updates, and keep iTunes for Windows if you need podcasts or audiobooks. This guide covers installation, account setup, Sync Library, offline listening, audio settings, and common fixes.
What you need before installing
- A Windows 11 PC that can install the app from Microsoft Store. Apple’s available documentation does not specify a complete current minimum hardware or Windows build, so check the Store listing for compatibility with your PC.
- Access to Microsoft Store and an Apple Account. A subscription is needed for the Apple Music streaming catalog and Sync Library.
- For Dolby Atmos playback, Apple says Windows requires the separate Dolby Access app for supported songs.
Apple’s Windows app overview, updated August 3, 2026, describes Apple Music as a Microsoft Store app and notes that availability can vary by region. Apple’s Windows app overview and the Microsoft Store listing are the best places to check current availability.
Apple Music, iTunes, and Apple Devices: which app does what?

Apple Music is the modern Windows app for music, not a replacement for every iTunes function. Apple’s Windows app overview explains the current division of work.
Install Apple Music on Windows 11
- Open Microsoft Store.
- Search for Apple Music and select the app.
- Select Get, then open Apple Music when installation finishes.
Apple documents this process in its Windows installation guide. If the app does not appear or install, update Windows, open Microsoft Store directly, check its region and sign-in status, and look for app updates. In Microsoft Store, open Library and select Get updates or Check for updates if that is the label shown. See Microsoft’s Store update instructions. Restart the PC and check the listing again. Avoid unofficial installers; use the web player or iTunes temporarily if Store access is blocked.

Sign in and subscribe
- Open Apple Music and select Sign In at the bottom of the sidebar.
- Select Sign In again, enter the Apple Account used for your music library, and complete two-factor authentication if prompted.
- If you do not have an account, choose Create New Apple Account and follow the prompts.
Apple says a user already signed in to Apple TV on the same PC is automatically signed in to Apple Music. For the documented steps, see Apple’s sign-in guide.
You can use an existing subscription or sign up through Apple Music. The U.S. Apple page checked August 18, 2026 showed Individual at $11.99 per month after the displayed introductory offer, Family at $19.99 per month for the subscriber plus up to five other people, and Student at $6.99 per month for verified students. It also displayed limited-time three-month offers of $1.99 for Individual and $4.99 for Family. Apple One, which bundles Apple Music with other services, was listed as starting at $19.95 per month. These are U.S. figures, not worldwide prices; offers, eligibility, and renewal terms can change. Check Apple’s current U.S. plans and pricing before subscribing.
Sync your music library across devices
To see your cloud library and playlists on this PC, enable Sync Library and use the same Apple Account on your other devices:
- In Apple Music, select Sidebar Actions at the top of the sidebar.
- Choose Settings, then General.
- Turn on Sync library.
Sync Library makes your Apple Music additions and playlists available across signed-in devices, and can include supported matched or uploaded music. Apple documents a limit of up to 100,000 songs, excluding iTunes Store purchases, with a maximum file size of 200 MB per file. Apple says matched songs are 256-kbps DRM-free AAC; other uploaded songs retain their original quality. See Apple’s Sync Library guide.

Sync Library is not a backup. Keep a separate copy of important local music files. A file that exists only on the PC will not automatically appear elsewhere unless it is imported and synchronized through the supported library process. If Sync Library is missing, check that you are signed in and have an active subscription. If tracks do not appear, confirm the account on both devices and allow synchronization time before changing settings.
Add music and download it for offline listening
Apple Music catalog
Find a song, album, or playlist in Apple Music and add it to your library. Use its download control to keep it available offline. A catalog download is tied to your subscription; it is not an ordinary DRM-free file you can keep playing after the subscription ends.
iTunes Store purchases
Purchased tracks are distinct from subscription catalog items. They can be played through Apple Music or iTunes depending on the content and setup. Some older purchases may have authorization restrictions; see the troubleshooting section if one will not play.

Apple Music can import music already on your computer. Imported files, Store purchases, catalog tracks, and cloud-synchronized music can have different metadata, download controls, and cross-device behavior. Apple’s Windows user guide includes instructions for importing files and managing the library.

Set up lossless audio
- In Apple Music, select Sidebar Actions, then Settings.
- Open Playback and turn on Lossless audio.
- Choose a quality separately for streaming and downloads.
Apple lists Lossless up to 24-bit/48 kHz and Hi-Res Lossless up to 24-bit/192 kHz in its Windows lossless audio guide. Higher-quality streams use more data and downloaded files take more disk space. The Lossless badge means a lossless version is available; it does not prove that the complete Windows-to-headphones or speaker chain is delivering that original format. Bluetooth commonly re-encodes audio, and Hi-Res playback may require suitable external hardware. Apple also notes the larger file sizes and bandwidth demands of higher-quality audio on its Apple Music page.
Play Dolby Atmos music
For supported songs, Apple says Windows playback requires the separate Dolby Access app. The track must have an Atmos version; look for the Dolby icon. Availability varies by region.
- Install or update Dolby Access from Microsoft Store.
- In Apple Music, select Sidebar Actions, then Settings and Playback.
- Choose an option in the Dolby Atmos menu.
- To download Atmos versions, open General and enable Download Dolby Atmos.
For a playing song, Apple also documents changing the setting through the Dolby button in playback controls and Audio Quality Settings. See Apple’s Windows Dolby Atmos guide. The Dolby label alone does not guarantee every headset or receiver receives Atmos unchanged: Windows settings, drivers, Dolby Access, and the output device all matter. If playback misbehaves, switch to stereo temporarily to isolate the issue.

Manage playlists and local-library details
Apple Music’s Windows guide covers creating and editing playlists, Smart Playlists, playlist folders, sorting and filtering songs, lyrics, favorites, local song information and artwork, the media-folder location, and MiniPlayer use. These controls are useful when maintaining a library with a mixture of streaming catalog items and personal files. Consult the Apple Music User Guide for Windows for the specific control you need.

Use Apple Devices for iPhone and iPad management
Installing Apple Music does not replace Apple Devices when you want to back up, restore, update, or manually sync an iPhone or iPad. Open Apple Devices for those tasks; Apple Music is for the music library. Apple outlines the distinction on its Windows apps page.
Why podcasts and audiobooks may still need iTunes
Apple directs Windows users to iTunes for managing podcasts and audiobooks. Keep it installed if those are part of your workflow; Apple Music is not a universal replacement for iTunes. See Apple’s Windows app guidance.

The app will not install or does not appear
Update Windows, open Microsoft Store directly, confirm the Store account and region, update Store apps, then restart and retry. Compatibility can vary by PC, and Apple’s available support pages do not state a complete current hardware or Windows build requirement. Use the Store’s live compatibility result rather than assuming every Windows 11 system is supported. If Store apps are blocked on a managed PC, try the Apple Music web player.
You cannot sign in
Check that you entered the Apple Account used on your other music devices, complete any two-factor prompt, and confirm the subscription is active if you expect catalog access. If the credentials are right, check network access, Windows date and time, VPN or firewall restrictions, and Store updates. Signing out and back in can refresh a stale session; reinstalling should be a later step, not the first.

The library is empty or songs are missing or dimmed
Confirm the Apple Account, subscription, and Sync Library setting, then allow time for synchronization. Check whether a missing local file was imported and whether its original file still exists. Tracks can also be unavailable in a region or affected by format or authorization restrictions. Apple’s troubleshooting guide covers missing and dimmed songs.
There is no sound
Check Apple Music’s volume and Windows system volume, then confirm the selected Windows output device, speaker power and cabling, and Bluetooth connection. Apple’s playback troubleshooting guide starts with app and computer volume, speakers, cables, and power.
A purchased song will not play
Some older iTunes Store purchases that are not iTunes Plus may be limited to five authorized computers. If you have reached that limit, deauthorize a computer before authorizing another. Apple documents this and other playback issues in its Windows playback guide.

An AAC file will not play
Apple warns that some AAC files obtained elsewhere may not play in Apple Music. An .aac file extension alone does not guarantee compatibility; consult the same Apple troubleshooting guide.
Lossless or Dolby Atmos is unavailable
For lossless, check Settings → Playback and whether the selected quality applies to streaming or downloads. The available output also depends on the audio hardware and route. For Atmos, check the track’s Dolby icon, Dolby Access, Apple Music’s Playback setting, and the Windows output and spatial-audio configuration. Test stereo or disable Atmos briefly to identify whether spatial processing is the source of a problem.
Is Apple Music the right choice on a Windows PC?
Apple Music is a strong option if you want one library across Apple devices and Windows, already own iTunes purchases, value Apple’s lossless and Dolby Atmos catalog, or want Apple Music Classical with an eligible subscription. Apple describes its catalog as more than 100 million songs, though selection varies by country and licensing; see its product page.
It is less suitable if you need a free ad-supported desktop tier, rely mainly on podcasts or audiobooks, want one app for device backups and music, cannot install Store apps, or need portable DRM-free copies of subscription downloads.

- Spotify: worth considering for free ad-supported listening, discovery, and social playlist use. Compare current plans and features on Spotify’s official Premium page; pricing and current audio features are not specified here.
- Amazon Music: a natural alternative for Prime members and Alexa or Echo households. Plans and eligibility vary by country and membership; check Amazon Music.
- Apple Music web player: useful when Store access is unavailable or the app is temporarily broken. It is a fallback, not necessarily equivalent for downloads, local-file management, or audio settings. Open Apple Music on the web.
- iTunes for Windows: remains useful for podcasts, audiobooks, and some older setups, but is not the preferred modern Apple Music interface. See Apple’s Windows app overview.
