AutoMix goes beyond a fixed crossfade by analyzing tracks, matching beats and using time stretching to build a more continuous transition. Apple later improved the transitions, expanded AutoMix to tvOS and HomePod, and added language pairings in 2026.
These features began rolling out with iOS 26 and the related iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 and watchOS 26 releases in autumn 2025. Availability still depends on the device, software build, subscription, territory, song lyrics and language pairing.
What AutoMix actually does
Apple describes AutoMix as mixing songs “like a DJ.” It analyzes musical characteristics and can construct transitions using beat matching and time stretching. The goal is a continuous, performance-like handoff rather than simply allowing one track to fade while the next begins.
That does not mean every transition will sound perfect, and Apple has not claimed that AutoMix selects songs according to your mood or rebuilds playlists around your skips. Its documented role is transition construction, not personalized playlist programming. Apple’s original description is available in its iOS 26 announcement.

AutoMix versus ordinary crossfade

AutoMix is therefore most interesting on rhythmically compatible music: dance, electronic, pop and other playlists where a shared pulse makes a transition plausible. Very different tempos, abrupt genre changes, live recordings and songs with unusual endings can produce less convincing results. If a transition sounds wrong, standard playback remains available.
Is AutoMix really “AI-powered”?
Apple and some headlines use intelligence and machine-learning language, but the public documentation supports a narrower claim than “Apple Intelligence creates a personalized DJ.” Apple has described audio analysis, beat matching and time stretching. It has not established that AutoMix is a generative-AI feature, that it runs through Apple Intelligence, or that it learns your taste to reorder every playlist.
The accurate description is an automated, intelligent transition system. Calling it “AI-powered” is reasonable shorthand for the machine-learning and audio-analysis techniques Apple cites, but it should not be read as evidence of a human-level DJ or universal musical judgment.
Lyrics Translation and Lyrics Pronunciation are different tools
Both features appear in Apple Music’s lyrics experience, but they solve different problems.
Lyrics Translation
Translation presents an English or other supported-language rendering of a song’s lyrics so listeners can understand music performed in another language. Apple says its system uses machine learning with fine-tuning from language experts to preserve emotion, cultural context and lyrical intent. That is Apple’s stated design goal, not a guarantee of literal or culturally perfect wording.

Lyrics Pronunciation
Pronunciation adds romanized or phonetic guidance intended to help listeners sing words in another language. It is useful for karaoke, language learners and anyone exploring international catalogs. Pronunciation is not translation: one explains meaning, while the other helps you say or sing the original words.
Neither option is universal. The button can be absent because lyrics are unavailable, the song is not covered, the language pairing is unsupported, or the territory and software build differ. Pronunciation guidance can assist a learner, but it is not a substitute for a native speaker.

Apple’s June 2026 services update lists seven additional translation pairings:

- English to French
- English to German
- English to Italian
- English to Korean
- English to Spanish
- French to English
- Japanese to English
The same update lists new pronunciation pairings including Arabic to Romanized Arabic, English to Hangul, English to Katakana, Japanese to Hangul and Simplified Mandarin Chinese to Katakana. How to find the lyric features
- Open Apple Music and play a song.
- Tap the MiniPlayer.
- Open the lyrics view.
- Choose the available translation or pronunciation control.
This MiniPlayer-to-lyrics route is documented by Apple Music for Artists. Controls can vary with the operating-system release, and a missing option usually reflects song or language coverage rather than a broken device.

How to use AutoMix
Start playback, open the Now Playing interface and look for the AutoMix control where it is supported. Apple has not published one permanent menu location for every device and software build, so avoid assuming that the control appears in every playlist screen.
If you cannot find it, check the following practical possibilities:
- The device may not be running a compatible operating-system version.
- Apple Music may be signed into a different Apple Account than expected.
- The subscription may not be active.
- The current playback context or device may not support the control.
- Apple Music may need to be quit and reopened after an operating-system update.
- A different playlist or song sequence may expose the control.
For a poor-sounding transition, turn AutoMix off and compare standard playback, then try tracks with more compatible tempos or genres. AutoMix is optional; it does not replace ordinary playlist order.

Music Pins
Music Pins let you place favorite artists, albums and playlists near the top of your Library, reducing the need to search for frequently played material.
Sing improvements
Apple says the Sing experience can turn an iPhone into a handheld microphone for Apple TV, with amplified vocals, real-time lyrics and visual effects. The feature is aimed at group singing and karaoke rather than replacing dedicated audio equipment.

More platforms and audio options
Apple’s 2026 update says improved AutoMix expanded to tvOS and HomePod. It also says tvOS gained Hi-Res Lossless Audio when paired with compatible external speaker output. These additions do not mean every Apple Music feature works identically across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV, HomePod, Apple Watch and Vision Pro.
Artist-submitted lyrics
Artists can submit original lyrics through Apple Music for Artists, which helps make those lyrics eligible for Apple’s translation and pronunciation experiences. Eligibility still depends on Apple’s supported content and language coverage.
Compatibility and availability
The feature generation is associated with iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 and watchOS 26. AutoMix’s later expansion specifically includes tvOS and HomePod. Apple’s public materials do not establish that every individual feature is available on every Apple Music-capable device, so check the feature on the device and software version you actually use.
Lyrics features also depend on the song’s lyric data, supported language pair, country or region and connection state. Try another track, confirm that lyrics are present, update the app and operating system, and reopen the Now Playing lyrics view before treating a missing control as a device fault.

This is a needs-based comparison, not a universal ranking. Current competitor prices and exact feature parity vary by country and should be checked on the providers’ own pages: Spotify, YouTube Music and Amazon Music.
Is the update worth an Apple Music subscription?
It is a strong reason to try Apple Music if you regularly listen to international music, want help singing in another language, or prefer playlists that can flow with DJ-style transitions. The case is stronger for Apple households already using Apple One, HomePod or Apple TV, and for listeners who value lossless and Spatial Audio alongside these software features.
It is not, by itself, proof that Apple Music has superior discovery, social tools or recommendations. AutoMix is automated rather than human-curated, and translation coverage remains song- and language-dependent. If another service already meets your needs and none of these specific capabilities matters, there is no immediate reason to switch.
