Apple Intelligence has not been confirmed as a built-in Apple Music playlist-artwork generator. In July 2024, iOS 18 beta code suggested Apple was testing a “Create Image” button that could call Image Playground while editing a playlist. The control was not available in that beta, and current Apple support documentation still describes importing artwork from Photos, a new photo, or a file. You can achieve the intended result today by creating an image in Image Playground, saving it, and assigning it to the playlist manually.
What Apple tested in iOS 18
Reports published on July 23 and 24, 2024 found strings in iOS 18 beta 4 pointing to a “Create Image” control in Apple Music’s playlist-editing interface. The proposed control appeared intended to open Apple’s Image Playground and produce stylized playlist artwork.

9to5Mac and MacRumors both treated it as an in-development discovery, not a product launch. The button was not active for testers when the reports appeared. Beta code can be changed, delayed, or removed, so it did not establish that the feature would ship.
Did the integrated feature ship?
There is no verified evidence here that a public iOS 18 release included the integrated Apple Music button, or that Apple later enabled it on every compatible device and in every region. The safe distinction is:

- Confirmed: Apple experimented with generating playlist artwork through a proposed Apple Music control.

Apple’s current playlist documentation explains how to change artwork but does not document a dedicated Apple Intelligence or Image Playground button inside Music.
What Apple Music supports now
Apple’s documented iPhone workflow lets you replace playlist artwork with:
- A photo taken with the camera.
- An image in Photos.
- A file stored on the device.
Open Music, open or create a playlist, enter its edit or customization controls, choose the artwork option, select the image source, and save. Labels can vary by device and software version, but the underlying import options are documented by Apple.

How to make an AI-generated cover today
Generate the artwork in Image Playground
- Open Image Playground on a compatible iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Choose New Image.
- Describe the visual or add concepts, people, or photos. Examples include “neon-lit rainy-night synthwave city,” “warm acoustic folk road trip, illustrated album cover,” or “minimal black-and-gold jazz club poster.”
- Select an available Apple style, such as Animation, Illustration, or Sketch.
- Review the generated variations and save the one you want to Photos or Files.
Apple’s Image Playground guide documents descriptions, concepts, selected photos and people as inputs, along with browsing variations and saving results.
Assign it in Apple Music
- Open Music and select the playlist.
- Open the playlist’s edit or customization controls.
- Choose to change its artwork.
- Select the saved image from Photos or Files.
- Save the playlist.
This is a practical workaround, not proof that Apple Music itself is generating the cover. A square source with the main subject near the center generally survives cropping better across playlist grids, CarPlay, lock-screen views and full-screen artwork. If readable titles or artist names matter, add the typography in a conventional editor; generative image tools often render lettering unreliably.
Image Playground’s changing capabilities
The experience depends on the Image Playground version and region. Earlier implementations emphasized non-photorealistic results. In June 2026, Apple announced a newer model that can create photorealistic images, uses Private Cloud Compute for relevant processing, and adds a hidden SynthID watermark to generated images. See Apple’s June 2026 announcement for that dated capability change; do not assume every device or software release has identical styles or processing.

Image Playground output is also variable: two generations may differ in composition, and prompts are not guaranteed to be followed precisely. Apple’s processing model can involve on-device work and, for some capabilities, Private Cloud Compute rather than an entirely local workflow.
Device, language and availability requirements
Apple’s current Apple Intelligence requirements list these hardware categories:

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Hardware | Compatibility guidance |
|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 15 Pro models and iPhone 16 models or later |
| iPad | iPad mini with A17 Pro, and iPads with M1 or later |
| Mac | Mac models with M1 or later |
| Other Apple devices | Apple Vision Pro and certain Apple Watch models paired with a compatible iPhone |
Apple says Apple Intelligence models require approximately 7 GB of device storage (excluding Apple Watch). The device language and Siri language must match a supported language, and availability can vary by country or region. Requirements can change, so check Apple’s live compatibility page rather than treating this list as permanent. Apple Music can still accept ordinary image files on hardware that cannot run Image Playground.

If “Create Image” is missing
Its absence does not prove that your setup is faulty; the integrated control may never have shipped, may have been renamed or removed, or may be restricted by hardware, language or region. To troubleshoot:
- Confirm your model and region on Apple’s compatibility page.
- Install the latest available operating-system update.
- Check Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri.
- Allow the Apple Intelligence models to finish downloading.
- Open Image Playground separately and try the manual workflow.
- Import the saved result through Apple Music’s artwork controls.
If Image Playground itself is unavailable, recheck hardware, software, device and Siri language, regional availability, enabled Apple Intelligence, and model-download status.
Do not confuse artwork generation with Playlist Playground
Coverage of iOS 26.4 described Playlist Playground, a separate Apple Music feature that creates playlists from natural-language prompts about mood, genre, era, activity or a listening situation. See the iOS 26.4 beta report and release coverage. Creating a playlist from a prompt does not establish that Apple automatically generates its cover. Apple support material captured for the feature described it as beta-only for subscribers aged 13 and older in the United States and in English; that limitation is subject to change.

- Convenience: Image Playground is quicker than building a cover from scratch.
- Control: A dedicated editor is better for exact typography, layout, colors and repeatable branding.
- Consistency: Generated variations may not produce a uniform look across a series of playlists.
- Privacy and provenance: Processing depends on the feature and version; newer photorealistic output carries Apple’s hidden SynthID watermark.
- Subscription: The evidence does not establish a separate Apple Intelligence fee or a special artwork add-on. Apple Music access is relevant to managing the playlist, while Image Playground can create images independently.
The current answer
Apple clearly explored AI-generated Apple Music playlist artwork in iOS 18 beta code, but the public release of that integrated control remains unverified. The reliable workflow now is to generate a cover in Image Playground, save it to Photos or Files, and apply it through Apple Music’s existing artwork picker. Playlist Playground’s prompt-based playlist creation is related, but it is not evidence of automatic AI cover art.
