Apple and Lucasfilm marked Star Wars Day in 2024 with a commercial about an iPhone 15 helping a fan find friends at a convention. The feature at its center was Precision Finding for Find My friends: directional guidance for locating someone who has chosen to share their location, not a way to track people without their knowledge.
What happens in the Star Wars Day ad?
A May 3, 2024, Tech Times report described the Apple–Lucasfilm commercial as following Owen, a devoted Mandalorian fan, on his way to a convention. He cares for his cat, Leia, travels by public transportation, stops for boba tea, and uses an iPhone 15 to coordinate with fellow fans. The story ends with the group reuniting.
The timing was deliberate: the report appeared on May 3, just ahead of May 4, popularly celebrated as Star Wars Day for its “May the Fourth” wordplay. The campaign is evidence of a specific 2024 advertising collaboration, not of an ongoing commercial partnership.
What fan details did the report highlight?
Tech Times identified Channel Tres’s “All My Friends” as the soundtrack and said the commercial is filled with Star Wars references and Easter eggs. It also reported that the production received more than 300 submissions and involved 172 fans, with references to the 501st Legion, a Star Wars costuming organization. The report further said lyrics were modified to mention the Legion. These production and music details are reported by Tech Times; they are not independently confirmed here by an Apple or Lucasfilm production credit.

What Precision Finding for friends actually does
Apple calls the capability “Precision Finding for Find My friends.” It uses Ultra Wideband to help a user move toward a person who is sharing their location through Find My. When the devices are compatible and close enough, the iPhone can provide directional and distance guidance rather than showing only a map location. Apple describes finding one another in crowded places as a use case and says the feature is built with Find My privacy protections.
The basic sequence is straightforward: a friend shares their location, the user selects that person in Find My, and—when the necessary hardware and conditions are present—the iPhone displays guidance toward them. It is not a guaranteed radar: distance, obstructions, indoor layouts, interference, settings, and regional support can all affect whether guidance appears or how well it works.

Friend finding is not item finding
The ad’s reported scenario is about locating consenting friends, not finding a lost object. Precision Finding can also be used with AirTag and compatible Find My network accessories, but that is a separate use case; Apple’s iOS 17 feature documentation discusses Precision Finding for shared AirTags and accessories.
Which iPhones and software support the launch feature?
Apple’s iPhone 15 launch announcement says the feature was introduced with the iPhone 15 generation and iOS 17. Apple lists iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max as compatible, and says Ultra Wideband is required. Availability is not universal across countries and regions. Ordinary Find My map-based location viewing is broader; having the Find My app alone does not mean an iPhone can offer Ultra Wideband directional guidance.

Apple also says the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip enables two compatible devices to connect at up to three times the range of the previous generation. That is Apple’s comparison of the chip’s range, not a promise of three times more usable finding distance in every crowd or building.

A fan convention gives the technology an easy-to-understand problem to solve: friends may be nearby, but a dense venue makes a map pin or text exchange less immediately useful. The Star Wars setting supplies a recognizable community and a reason for the characters to gather; the iPhone’s directional guidance supplies the resolution. That is a reading of the ad’s creative setup, not a stated Apple or Lucasfilm strategy.

What the commercial does not establish
- It does not show that an iPhone can locate anyone: friend finding depends on location sharing and compatible devices.
- It does not establish that Precision Finding will work in every venue, country, or radio environment.
- It does not make the feature necessary for all Find My users; map-based location sharing remains distinct from directional Precision Finding.
- It does not establish current iPhone pricing or make a case for upgrading solely to find friends at occasional events.
