On October 19, 2011, AOL relaunched its online radio service as AOL Radio powered by Slacker. The “pros, not your friends” pitch referred to AOL’s music directors, DJs and critics programming more than 200 stations—not to a service without algorithms or personalization. Slacker supplied the technology behind the experience, while AOL kept its own editorial identity.
The result was a hybrid: professionally programmed stations, personalized artist and song radio, and plans for paid listening options. It was a historical internet-radio product, not a current AOL service.
What AOL launched
This was a relaunch of AOL Radio, not the creation of a new radio company. AOL had previously partnered with CBS Radio; in 2011, Slacker became its radio technology partner. The partnership was announced in June, and the redesigned AOL Radio powered by Slacker followed in October. RadioWorld covered the shift from CBS to Slacker, while the Los Angeles Times described the partnership and its audience ambitions.

What “powered by pros” meant
AOL emphasized that its stations were programmed by music professionals, including music directors, DJs and critics. Their job was to shape stations around genres, moods, eras and musical tastes, giving listeners an editorially selected stream rather than leaving every choice to a recommendation engine—or to friends’ listening habits.
But the slogan was a positioning line, not a literal description of a system with no automation. Slacker’s technology remained central, and listeners could start artist- or song-based stations and use playback controls to personalize what they heard. The service combined:
- Human programming: AOL’s existing thematic stations and professional selections.
- Personalization: Slacker-powered artist and song stations and listener controls.
- Editorial context: Artist and album information, lyrics and station details were part of the product’s feature set.
- User participation: Listeners could save stations, mark favorites, ban tracks, skip songs and share stations.
So “pros, not your friends” meant AOL wanted its professional curation to be the service’s distinguishing identity. It did not mean friends, listener signals or software played no role.

How the service worked at launch

Launch coverage described a redesigned player and mobile experience. Macworld reported on the player, music information, mobile access and advertising changes; IntoMobile covered the Apple app release and expected Android rollout.
Advertising and subscription plans
AOL said the relaunch would carry about 50% fewer audio commercials than the previous AOL Radio service. Contemporary reports described an expected level of roughly three minutes of audio ads per hour, compared with about six minutes previously. These were launch-era claims about audio advertising on AOL’s service—not a verified measurement for every station, nor a comparison that establishes AOL had fewer ads than every competitor. BetaNews reported the reduction claim.
AOL and Slacker also announced two planned paid tiers. Historical coverage put their launch-era prices at approximately $3.99 and $9.99 per month; those figures are not current prices.

The distinction between radio and on-demand access is important. The free service centered on station listening; the planned Premium tier was intended to add direct selection of songs, albums and artists. A catalog advertised as exceeding 10 million songs did not mean all of that music could be played on demand in the free tier. Gizmodo’s contemporary review discussed the tiers and reported prices.

AOL Radio, Pandora and Spotify: the 2011 distinction
In 2011, Pandora was widely associated with personalized stations generated from a seed artist or song, while AOL foregrounded stations selected and shaped by human programmers. Contemporary coverage framed AOL as an alternative for listeners who wanted a more human-curated feel. Gizmodo made that contrast explicitly.
It was a difference in emphasis, not a clean divide between human and machine. AOL also offered personalized stations, and recommendation services such as Pandora depended on human musical analysis as well as software. Spotify, meanwhile, was more closely associated with on-demand listening. AOL’s planned Premium Radio tier aimed to bring some on-demand features into a product that remained fundamentally a radio-streaming service.

The approach had trade-offs. Professional programming could create coherent genre or mood stations and add editorial context, but might be less individually responsive than algorithmic recommendations. Personalization could make stations more relevant, but it also meant the “pros, not your friends” line simplified a mixed system. And the service’s free radio access was not the same as unrestricted on-demand listening.

The 2011 relaunch came as internet radio, mobile streaming and on-demand music were competing for listeners. AOL could refresh its radio product without building every part of a modern streaming platform itself. Slacker gained access to AOL’s audience and its professionally programmed content. The companies also had a way to combine advertising-supported listening with subscription plans and mobile features.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the deal was expected to more than double Slacker’s audience, while noting Slacker was still far smaller than Pandora at the time. That projection belongs to the 2011 context, not to a claim about the companies’ later reach.

What happened to AOL Radio?
AOL Radio is discontinued. Historical references place the service’s end in December 2017; it should not be mistaken for an active AOL product or for a service that can still be subscribed to. The historical overview records the service’s discontinuation.
Its place in online-radio history is best understood as an attempt to combine editorially programmed stations with a third-party personalization platform and subscription features. AOL did not eliminate algorithms or user choice. It made professional curation the headline—and used Slacker’s technology to build the rest of the listening experience.
