Antstream Arcade launched on iPhone and iPad on June 27, 2024, and is available now. The subscription service streams a company-advertised catalog of more than 1,300 licensed retro games, with features such as tournaments and leaderboards. It is not an offline game collection: you need an internet connection to play, and the catalog and price may vary by region.
Update: The original announcement was made on June 21, 2024. Its “next week” wording referred to the June 27, 2024 launch, not an upcoming release.
What Antstream Arcade is
Antstream is a subscription-based streaming service for retro games. Rather than downloading a collection of games or supplying your own game files, you choose from Antstream’s catalog and play through its platform. The company describes its games as licensed and currently advertises more than 1,300 titles. That is a company-stated total, not a guarantee that every game is available in every country or on every supported device. Antstream’s service overview explains its model and features.

Those categories are not necessarily represented in equal depth: a large overall library does not mean a deep selection from every familiar console. If you are subscribing for one particular game or system, check the catalog in your region first.

More than a straightforward game library
Antstream adds modern service features around older games, including tournaments, global leaderboards, challenges, achievements and cloud saves. It also promotes player-versus-player challenges and couch co-op. These features provide new ways to compete or revisit a game; they are separate from the original content of the games themselves. Availability of a particular feature can depend on the title and platform.
Price: launch deals are not the current price
Prices reported around the June 2024 launch should be treated as historical. The launch promotion was reported at $3.99 per month or $29.99 per year; the regular prices reported at the time were $4.99 monthly or $39.99 annually. Antstream’s service page currently displays $3.99 monthly and $39.99 annually, while the U.S. App Store listing advertises a seven-day free trial with a yearly subscription. These are different pricing signals, not a universal quote: the amount and terms can vary by country, storefront, promotion and subscription route. Check the final price and renewal terms shown at checkout before subscribing.
A trial or introductory offer may turn into a paid subscription unless canceled under the terms shown by Apple or Antstream. Before starting one, confirm the renewal date, renewal price and cancellation instructions in the account through which you subscribe.

What playing on an iPhone or iPad requires
Because Antstream streams its games, it requires an active Wi-Fi or cellular connection; the service is not a way to download games for offline play. That makes it a poor fit for flights, commutes or places with unreliable coverage unless you have another gaming option. Connection quality, latency and streaming image quality can also be affected by your network and service conditions. Mobile-data use may matter if your plan has a limit.
Touch controls may be sufficient for some simple or turn-based games, but a physical controller is often more comfortable for platformers, shooters, fighting games and titles that demand precise directional input. The U.S. App Store listing says the app supports compatible wired and Bluetooth controllers, including Backbone, Xbox and PlayStation controllers. Compatibility can vary with the controller, device, operating-system version and connection method, so check your setup rather than assuming every model behaves the same way.
Antstream versus emulators
Antstream should not be reduced to “an emulator.” It gives subscribers access to games through its own streaming service and says its catalog is licensed; users do not need to locate and manage game files to get started. That makes it convenient, but the trade-off is a recurring subscription, an internet requirement and dependence on Antstream’s servers and licensing arrangements.

Emulator apps, by contrast, typically let users run compatible game files locally, and may allow offline play depending on the app and the files. Users commonly need to provide and manage those files themselves. The details of game-file rights depend on jurisdiction and circumstances, so this comparison is about how the services work, not a blanket legal judgment.
Antstream versus Apple Arcade
These subscriptions serve different interests. Antstream is specifically oriented toward retro games and streams them. Apple Arcade is a broader premium game service, focused mainly on modern games and Apple Arcade titles; Apple says its games have no ads or in-app purchases, and many can be downloaded for offline play. Apple’s U.S. page currently lists Arcade at $6.99 per month or $49.99 per year. Its supported devices include iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV 4K and Apple Vision Pro, subject to individual game compatibility. See Apple’s Arcade page for current details.
If your priority is a ready-made retro catalog and competitions built around classic games, Antstream is the more direct match. If you want a modern Apple-focused game subscription, broader device support and the ability to download many games, Arcade is a different proposition—not a like-for-like retro alternative.

Which Apple devices are supported?
The 2024 announcement was specifically about iPhone and iPad. Antstream’s support documentation separately lists platforms including Mac, PC, Linux, Android, Xbox, PlayStation, web browsers, Amazon Fire TV, Atari VCS and Samsung TV. That list does not establish that the iPhone and iPad app runs on Apple TV, Apple Watch or Vision Pro. Check Antstream’s supported-devices page for the current platform list.
Who is it for?
- A good fit: players who want a convenient, licensed retro catalog without managing game files; enjoy leaderboards or tournaments; and have a dependable connection.
- Probably not a fit: people who need offline play, want to own a fixed collection, dislike subscriptions, have unreliable or limited data service, or are subscribing mainly for a deep catalog from one specific console.
Antstream was among the early services to bring a multi-game streaming app to iPhone and iPad after Apple changed its App Store rules to permit this kind of offering. Previously, services such as Xbox Cloud Gaming and Nvidia GeForce Now generally had to be accessed through a browser on those devices. That context explains why the 2024 launch drew attention; it does not change the practical question for a subscriber today: whether the available games, connection requirement and subscription terms suit the way you play.

The app is available now on iPhone and iPad, but regional availability, catalog rights and prices can differ. Search for Antstream in your local App Store and verify the particular games and final subscription terms before paying.
