Stone’s longtime manager, music producer Walter Millsap III, told AP that the van “flipped over and was subsequently hit by a big rig.”
From The Sequence to a solo career
Stone’s career linked early hip-hop with the later neo-soul and R&B sound for which she became widely known. She was a member of The Sequence, an all-female hip-hop group, before establishing herself as a solo artist. The shift is an important part of her musical legacy: her work belongs both to the story of women in early hip-hop and to the soul-centered solo catalog that brought her to a wider audience.

“Wish I Didn’t Miss You” and “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” are among Stone’s best-known songs. AP reported that “No More Rain (In This Cloud)” spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B airplay chart. Other useful entry points into her solo catalog include “Baby” and “Brotha.”
Her album Mahogany Soul provides context for “More Than a Woman,” one of the works AP named among her Grammy-nominated recordings. AP reported that Stone received three Grammy nominations, including for “More Than a Woman,” “U-Haul,” and “Baby.”
