Angie Harmon sued Instacart and delivery driver Christopher Anthoney Reid after her dog Oliver was fatally shot during a grocery delivery at her Charlotte, North Carolina, home on March 30, 2024. Harmon’s complaint alleges that Reid arrived through a shopper account displaying the name “Merle,” shot Oliver without justification and caused emotional distress to Harmon and her family.
Reid told police that Oliver attacked him and that he fired once in self-defense. Police did not file criminal charges. Because the civil case was based on competing accounts and the sources reviewed did not establish a final judgment or settlement, Reid remains accused—not found liable—and the allegations should not be presented as proven facts.
What happened on March 30, 2024
Harmon’s complaint says she ordered an Instacart grocery delivery to her Charlotte, North Carolina, home on March 30, 2024. The shopper profile shown in the app displayed the name “Merle” and a photograph of an older woman. Harmon alleges that a younger man arrived instead and that she did not realize she had been communicating with him through the account. The complaint identifies that man as Christopher Anthoney Reid.
According to the civil filing, Harmon heard a gunshot, found her dog Oliver wounded and saw the delivery person put a gun in the front of his pants. Oliver was taken to a veterinary office, where he later died. The complaint also says that Harmon’s daughters were present or nearby and suffered emotional distress. These are allegations in Harmon’s lawsuit, not findings by a court. (Read the filed complaint.)

The competing accounts of the shooting
Reid gave police a different account. He said Oliver attacked him and that he fired a single shot in self-defense. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police publicly described the incident as the dog attacking the delivery driver, followed by the driver firing one shot that mortally wounded the dog. Police did not file criminal charges.
That police account does not amount to a judicial ruling that the shooting was legally justified. It records the account provided to police and the department’s decision not to pursue criminal charges, not a civil finding of liability or a criminal verdict. (CBS News reported the police account and no-charge decision.)
Harmon disputed Reid’s version in an ABC News interview. She said she saw no physical signs that Reid had been bitten or attacked. She also said a necropsy found no evidence that Oliver had bitten or violently attacked anyone. Those statements are Harmon’s account and should not be treated as an independently adjudicated conclusion. (ABC News interview.)
What the lawsuit alleges
The case was filed electronically on May 10, 2024, in the Superior Court Division of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The case number is 24-CVS-021125.
| Party or issue | Information in the complaint and reporting |
|---|---|
| Plaintiffs | Angela Michelle Harmon, a minor child identified as Jane Doe, and Avery Grace Sehorn. |
| Defendants | Christopher Anthoney Reid and Maplebear Inc., doing business as Instacart. |
| Claims | The complaint asserts theories including trespass, gross negligence, negligent hiring, negligent supervision, negligent retention, misrepresentation, invasion of privacy and emotional-distress-related claims. |
| Relief requested | Monetary damages, with the amount to be determined through the litigation. Contemporary reporting described the demand as exceeding $25,000, but the filed complaint is the controlling source for the precise causes of action and requested relief. |
A complaint is a party’s formal statement of its claims. Filing it starts or advances a civil case; it does not prove that every allegation is true. Reid’s self-defense account, the alleged account-identity mismatch and Harmon’s negligence theories would need to be evaluated through the legal process if the case proceeds.

Why the “Merle” account matters
Harmon’s account raises a question about who was authorized to make the delivery and whether the person who arrived matched the shopper information shown to the customer. The complaint presents that mismatch as part of its claims against Reid and Instacart.
The available reporting does not establish that the account was stolen, fake or unlawfully shared. It establishes only that the app displayed “Merle” with an older woman’s photograph while Harmon alleges that Reid, a younger man, arrived. The reason for that discrepancy and whether it violated Instacart’s rules were not resolved by the sources reviewed.
Instacart’s response and platform policies
Instacart said Reid was permanently deactivated from the platform and that it has no tolerance for violence. The company also told ABC News that it uses third-party background checks and identity-verification measures and has a policy that does not allow weapons. Those statements describe Instacart’s response and policies; they are not an admission that the company was legally responsible for Oliver’s death or proof that its systems failed in this case.
Instacart’s Community Guidelines say that brandishing a weapon while receiving services violates the platform’s rules unless state law expressly prohibits that restriction. The guidance also says customers may select leave-at-my-door delivery when they do not want an in-person interaction, except for orders requiring valid identification.
Separately, Instacart says its platform-integrity program includes profile-photo review, biometric screening, human review and recurring real-time identity verification for shoppers. These are current company representations. They do not establish that every safeguard was used, passed or failed during Harmon’s delivery. (Instacart’s explanation of its platform-integrity controls.)

What has—and has not—been decided
- Criminal case: The reviewed police reporting says no criminal charges were filed. That is not the same as a court ruling that Reid’s conduct was justified.
- Civil case: Harmon filed claims against Reid and Maplebear Inc. The filing itself is not a finding that either defendant is liable.
- Instacart’s responsibility: The company said Reid was permanently deactivated and described its screening and weapons policies. The reviewed sources do not establish an admission of liability or a judicial finding that Instacart’s controls failed.
- Account identity: The complaint alleges a discrepancy between the shopper profile and the person who arrived. The reviewed sources do not establish why that discrepancy occurred.
- Final outcome: The research reviewed for this article did not locate a reliable public final judgment, settlement, dismissal or later merits ruling in the civil case. That absence should not be read as proof that the case is either still active or resolved.

News reports noted that Harmon’s Ring camera was inside charging and did not record the incident. That detail helps explain why front-entry video has become part of the public discussion, but it does not show that a camera would have prevented the shooting or definitively resolved the disputed accounts.

It still needs regular charging, motion-alert setup, a suitable mounting position and attention to privacy settings. The right equipment also depends on the home’s layout, Wi-Fi coverage and local rules.
As one current example, Ring’s Battery Doorbell (2nd Gen) product page lists a rechargeable battery, 2K video, head-to-toe coverage, live view, two-way talk and motion detection. Ring says recorded-video access may require a Ring Protect plan; features, storage and subscription requirements can change, so buyers should check the current terms before purchasing.
If a doorbell uses a removable battery, a video doorbell replacement battery or a second charging setup may reduce the time the camera is offline. Compatibility varies by model, and keeping a spare does not guarantee continuous recording. These are general home-security considerations, not recommendations that Harmon should have used particular equipment and not evidence relevant to deciding the lawsuit.

Bottom line
Angie Harmon’s case is a civil lawsuit arising from Oliver’s death after an Instacart delivery. The complaint alleges that Reid shot the dog without justification and that Instacart bears responsibility for issues including hiring, supervision and account verification. Reid told police Oliver attacked him, police filed no criminal charges, and the reviewed sources do not establish a final civil-court outcome. The central factual disputes therefore remain allegations rather than adjudicated facts.
