Jolie’s comments were reported by Entertainment Tonight on June 13, 2024, which attributed the interview to Deadline.
What Angelina Jolie said about producing The Outsiders
Jolie said: “And then I had the privilege of watching everyone work over this last year to make it into what it is, and Vivienne has been there the whole way.” The remark framed her role not simply as a producer credit, but as an opportunity to observe the creative team developing the musical over time.
How Vivienne was involved
Jolie was credited as a producer of the Broadway production, while Vivienne was credited as a producer’s assistant. Jolie said Vivienne had seen the musical’s earlier La Jolla Playhouse production several times and encouraged her mother to see it. She described that experience as helping her understand what connected with her daughter. These details were reported in ET’s account of the interview.
The story behind the musical
The stage musical adapts S.E. Hinton’s novel and the 1983 film. It follows Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and their Greaser community as they come into conflict with the wealthier Socs. Readers can encounter the story in Hinton’s original novel; the musical tells it through live performance, music, and staging.

The production’s 2024 Tony Awards
The Outsiders won the 2024 Tony Award for Best Musical and received four Tony Awards overall, according to BroadwayWorld’s recap of the acceptance speeches and a July 2024 report from the Archdiocese of New York. These are the production’s historical awards, not an indication of where it is playing now.

A January 2026 article from Orpheum Theatre Group described the musical as being on its first North American tour at that time. That report does not establish current dates or availability in any particular city. Check the production’s current official schedule and local venue listings before making plans.

Theatre also gives the story physical effects that a novel cannot: a July 2024 venue interview described elements including fire, rain, wind, and darkness. Those details describe the staging discussed at that time, not necessarily every performance or venue.
