Angela Winbush is best understood not only as a soul and R&B singer, but as a musician who shaped records from the keyboard, the writing room and the producer’s chair. Her path runs from gospel and music study to Stevie Wonder’s Wonderlove, the duo René & Angela, and a solo career that includes the hit “Angel.”

From church singing to Wonderlove

Winbush grew up singing gospel in church. She attended Howard University as an architecture major and, according to AllMusic’s career biography, initially sang to earn money before changing direction toward music education. Her next important step was joining Wonderlove, Stevie Wonder’s backing vocal group. The experience introduced her to the work behind a recording as well as the work in front of a microphone: writing, arranging and production.

2 Sharp Sharp $12.98
3 The Real Thing The Real Thing $12.10

That combination became central to her career. Winbush’s voice is a defining part of her music, but her contributions also include keyboard performance, songwriting and record production. Following those roles helps explain why her story extends well beyond a list of solo singles.

René & Angela: a duo and a creative partnership

Winbush formed René & Angela with René Moore. The pair recorded and performed together, while also working as a songwriting and production team for other artists. AllMusic highlights the duo’s “Save Your Love (For #1)” and “Your Smile”; the partnership’s broader importance also lies in the records they helped create beyond their own catalog.

WBSS Media reports that René & Angela wrote and produced four songs for Janet Jackson’s 1982 self-titled debut, including “Young Love.” That account illustrates the reach of their work, though individual track credits are best checked against the relevant album’s liner notes when making a song-by-song attribution.

Writing and producing beyond her own records

Winbush’s work as a writer and producer connected her to performers including Janet Jackson, Stephanie Mills and the Isley Brothers, according to AllMusic and WBSS Media. Her career therefore sits at the intersection of performing and making records for other voices: she was not simply supplying songs, but bringing musical and production skills to collaborative projects.

For listeners exploring her authorship, it is useful to distinguish a song she performs from a song she wrote or produced for another artist. The available career accounts establish the breadth of those collaborations, but detailed credits for a particular track should be verified in its album documentation rather than inferred from a general biography.

Her solo albums and “Angel”

Winbush’s solo catalog includes Sharp, The Real Thing and the self-titled Angela Winbush. AllMusic identifies “Angel” as a solo R&B number one. Her solo work puts her voice at the center, but the musician and producer behind the performances remain part of the appeal.

In a Billboard article published February 12, 1994, about her then-forthcoming self-titled album, Winbush described her approach to that record this way: “I concentrated less on the mechanics of the songs and zeroed in on the more emotional aspects of my singing.” It is a statement about that album’s creative approach, not a blanket description of how she made every record.

Where to start listening

Different entry points reveal different parts of Winbush’s career. The following routes are useful whether you are discovering her music or revisiting it:

Listening route What it highlights Starting point
Solo recordings Winbush as lead vocalist and artist in her own right Sharp, The Real Thing or Angela Winbush; “Angel” is a prominent hit
René & Angela Her partnership with René Moore as performers, writers and producers “Save Your Love (For #1)” and “Your Smile”
Work for other performers Her role behind records by other artists Explore the credited collaborations associated with Janet Jackson, Stephanie Mills and the Isley Brothers; check liner notes for exact track credits

Apple Music has an artist page that can serve as a discovery route, but catalog availability depends on territory and service. A listing there does not establish that every album or recording is available everywhere.

Why Winbush’s career deserves a wider view

Winbush’s significance comes from the range of roles she brought together: gospel-rooted singer, keyboardist, songwriter, producer, solo artist and member of a successful creative duo. Her career connects personal performance with the collaborative labor of making records, from the Wonderlove years through René & Angela and her own albums. Appreciating her fully means listening both to the voice out front and to the craftsmanship that helped shape music for others.
