His return to acting gives this severe, visually striking family drama a volatile center, even as its slow pace and elliptical storytelling make the film less convincing as a whole. The result is a strong showcase for a remarkable performer, not an undisputed masterpiece.
What is Anemone about?
Set against a rugged woodland landscape, Anemone follows estranged brothers Ray and Jem as they confront the family history that drove them apart. The official synopsis describes brothers forced to face a troubled past decades after one has self-exiled to the wilderness. The drama circles inherited hurt, trauma, guilt and the possibility of reconciliation rather than treating the family rupture as a simple mystery to solve. Daniel Day-Lewis makes the strongest case for the film
Anemone marks Day-Lewis’s return after an eight-year screen absence, as described by The Guardian in its September 2025 review. His performance is the film’s most compelling element: intensely physical, watchful and difficult to look away from. He makes Ray feel like a man whose isolation has become a way of living, not merely a dramatic circumstance.
The Guardian calls him “ferociously compelling,” even while criticizing the film’s pace and portentousness. That contrast gets at the movie’s central imbalance: Day-Lewis can make a scene feel charged even when the screenplay has not made the emotional stakes fully legible. For this reviewer, his presence is a persuasive reason to see Anemone; it is not enough to make every passage cohere.

A father-and-son collaboration shaped by family ties
Ronan Day-Lewis directs his feature debut, and he co-wrote the film with his father. Daniel Day-Lewis said he felt he knew Ray early in the writing process: “I felt I knew Ray fairly early on in the writing process. I don’t know why I did. I just did. I can’t explain it.” (CBS News)
The collaboration gives the film’s interest in brothers, fathers and sons an unusually direct context, but that context does not settle the film’s artistic success. The official logline foregrounds “the complex and profound ties that exist between brothers, fathers, and sons.” (Focus Features) The story’s emotional ambition is clear; how clearly it communicates that ambition is more debatable.
Atmosphere is stronger than narrative momentum
The woodland setting gives the film a stark, unstable beauty. The Associated Press highlights its natural atmosphere and points to a dramatic hailstorm as a moment when director Ronan Day-Lewis and cinematographer Ben Fordesman make the unpredictability of nature part of the experience. (AP review) BFI Sight and Sound also notes the rugged setting and flashes of magic realism, while questioning the film’s repeated imagery and revelation structure. (BFI Sight and Sound)
That tension between mood and movement is central to the viewing experience. The landscape and visual design create unease, but the drama can feel as if it is circling its meaning rather than advancing toward it. The Guardian calls the film plodding and overly portentous; the AP finds it sometimes frustratingly opaque. Those are judgments, not objective measurements, but they point to a real trade-off: Anemone may reward viewers drawn to atmosphere and ambiguity more than those looking for brisk, sharply explained family drama.

Do critics agree about Anemone?
No. Reviews recognize Day-Lewis’s intensity and the film’s visual ambition, but differ in how much those qualities overcome weaknesses in pacing, structure and clarity. Rotten Tomatoes’ displayed critics’ consensus says the film works more as a showcase for its star and the director’s stylistic flair than as a cohesive drama. (Rotten Tomatoes)
As of October 4, 2026, Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 52% Tomatometer from 147 critic reviews and a 57% Popcornmeter from more than 100 verified ratings. These are changing platform aggregates, not a definitive verdict on the film. The AP review is comparatively appreciative of the performances and atmosphere while still noting opacity; the Guardian and BFI Sight and Sound are more pointed about the film’s plodding pace or structural choices. Is Anemone worth watching?
Watch it for Day-Lewis’s return and for a family drama that commits to an austere visual mood. Go in expecting a slow, sometimes opaque story rather than a tightly plotted reconciliation drama. The performance is the film’s clearest achievement; whether its imagery and emotional themes add up to a satisfying whole depends on how much patience you have for deliberate ambiguity.
