Ananda Lewis said in October 2024 that her breast cancer had reached stage 4. In a CNN interview, the former MTV VJ recalled that doctors had recommended a double mastectomy when she was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer, but she chose to keep her tumor. Lewis died in June 2025, so the stage 4 news was an update from the year before her death—not her current status.
What Ananda Lewis said about keeping her tumor
In an October 15, 2024 CNN interview with her friend Sara Sidner and correspondent Stephanie Elam, Lewis described the decision doctors faced her with after her stage 3 diagnosis. “I decided to keep my tumor and try to work it out of my body a different way,” she said. What her treatment history included
Lewis’s account did not describe an absence of conventional medical care. She discussed changing her diet and sleep, pursuing aggressive homeopathic therapies, and receiving traditional medicine and radiation. CNN reported in the interview that she had learned the cancer was stage 4 the prior year. The Washington Post later reported that she received additional chemotherapy and medications recommended by her doctors after the cancer progressed. These are details of Lewis’s personal history, not treatment advice or evidence that any approach is appropriate for another patient. The Washington Post’s obituary provides further context.
When the cancer spread—and what the timeline can establish
The Washington Post reported that Lewis made her stage 3 diagnosis public in October 2020 and that a scan in October 2023 showed the cancer had spread. The sequence is clear: doctors recommended a double mastectomy, Lewis declined it, and a later scan showed progression. The reporting does not establish that declining surgery caused the cancer to spread.

Lewis died in 2025
