Halle Berry has two children: daughter Nahla, whom she shares with Gabriel Aubry, and son Maceo, whose father is Olivier Martinez. In a 2010 Vogue profile, Berry called Nahla “Best thing that ever happened to me” and said she loved being a mother. She also recounted a shopping incident in which she briefly lost track of her young daughter. The anecdote captures the intensity of early parenting, but it is a snapshot from 2010 rather than a description of the family’s present circumstances.

How Berry described teaching compassion
The 2015 Nicaragua trip
ABC News reported Berry’s account of taking seven-year-old Nahla on a World Food Programme trip to Nicaragua. Berry said the experience prompted Nahla to question how many possessions she had compared with children she met there.
Berry said Nahla packed belongings to donate and ran a lemonade stand twice a month to raise money for children in need. Berry described the lesson as part of her own responsibility as a parent: “it’s my responsibility to teach children the importance of taking care of children.” She also said, “It’s important to teach your children about caring for children.” These are Berry’s reported remarks about the trip, not an independently reported interview with Nahla.

How her children have influenced her acting
Playing a protective mother in Never Let Go
At CinemaCon in April 2024, Berry said thinking about her own children was part of her response to playing a mother protecting her children in Never Let Go. She explained the emotional logic in explicitly parental terms: “You know, we say as mama bears … we say, ‘I will take a bullet for my kids. I will do anything for my kids,’” adding that the role allowed her to “really play that scenario out.”
The interview took place before the film’s release. Berry also said she was unsure whether her then-10-year-old son should see a frightening movie built around that premise.

Nahla’s reaction to the film
In a September 2024 interview reported by E! News, Berry said she had misjudged whether then-16-year-old Nahla could handle a screening of Never Let Go. Nahla left crying, and Berry called the decision “one of my dumb mom moments.”
The story complicates the image of Berry as an always-confident “mama bear.” Her public comments show both a strong protective instinct and an admission that parents can misread what their children are ready to watch.

What Berry said about Nahla becoming more independent
A college summer program in 2025
Parade reported in June 2025 that Nahla, then 17, was attending a summer program at the college Berry said she hoped Nahla would attend the following year. Berry expressed excitement rather than claiming certainty about the outcome: “I’m dying to see who she’s gonna be and what she’s gonna do and what she’ll discover.”
Berry also connected her daughter’s growing independence with the need for parents to retain identities and ambitions of their own: “We have to be there for ourselves because these kids will grow up and move on, and if we haven’t maintained a life for ourselves, then what happens?” The report describes a plan and Berry’s feelings at that time; it does not establish that Nahla later enrolled at that college.

The themes running through Berry’s public comments
Protection
Berry’s comments about Never Let Go frame motherhood as a fierce protective responsibility, while her decision to question whether her son should see the film shows that protection can involve ordinary judgments about age and emotional readiness.
Compassion
Her Nicaragua story presents parenting as teaching children to notice inequality and respond practically, through donating possessions and raising money.
Humility
