American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez is a scripted dramatization, not a documentary reconstruction. Its first two episodes use real people and broad case history, but the show’s end-card warns that some characters, characterizations, incidents, locations, and dialogue are imagined or invented. The key distinction: court outcomes and reported medical findings can be checked against reporting; private conversations, scene details, and explanations of motive should not be treated as established fact just because they appear onscreen.

What happens in episodes 1 and 2?

The Boston Globe’s recap of episodes 1 and 2 describes the show’s opening as a 2013 Florida strip-club encounter between Aaron Hernandez and Alexander Bradley, whom the series calls Sherrod. In the show, Hernandez is paranoid about police investigating two Boston murders from the previous year. Episode 1 later depicts him shooting Bradley in the face after suspecting betrayal.

That is a recap of the dramatization, not independent confirmation of every detail or exchange in the scenes. Bradley later testified against Hernandez at a separate murder trial, but onscreen dialogue and the precise sequence of a private encounter remain dramatic choices unless independently corroborated.

The episodes then move into Hernandez’s teenage years and family life. The Globe says they introduce a football concussion, Hernandez’s effort to suppress or conceal his bisexuality, former Florida coach Urban Meyer, and hometown associates Ernest “Hobo” Wallace and Carlos A. “Charlie Boy” Ortiz. These are threads the series uses to frame his story; their presence does not prove that each portrayed interaction occurred as shown.

What is established about the real case?

Hernandez was drafted by the New England Patriots in 2010. He was convicted in 2015 of murdering Odin Lloyd and died by suicide in prison in 2017, aged 27, according to The Boston Globe’s series preview and its Spotlight project page.

The other Boston case has a different outcome: Hernandez was indicted for the 2012 murders of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, then acquitted of those murders in 2017. He was convicted of unlawful possession of the firearm used in that case. Calling him convicted of the double murder would be wrong.

The series is adapted from Gladiator: Aaron Hernandez and Football Inc., the podcast by The Boston Globe and Wondery, rather than presented as a documentary. FX’s series page lists the season and its Hulu viewing destination; ABC describes it as a 10-episode limited series. Viewing availability can vary by date and location.

Which parts are interpretation rather than a verified record?

Scenes, dialogue, and characterization

The Globe’s preview reports that the show’s end-card says some characters, characterizations, incidents, locations, and dialogue are imagined or invented. Treat scene construction and private conversations as dramatized unless a reliable independent account corroborates them. The existence of a real person or event behind a scene does not make every detail in that scene factual.

Sexuality and private relationships

The series foregrounds Hernandez’s sexuality and family dynamics, but scripted scenes cannot establish a private relationship on their own. TIME’s comparison of the show with reporting notes that the real-life relationship between Hernandez and Dennis Sansoucie was claimed by Sansoucie. Attribute that claim rather than presenting the scripted portrayal as independently proven.

Concussion, CTE, and causation

TIME reports that Boston University researchers who examined Hernandez’s brain found severe chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE). It also reports neurologist Sam Gandy’s view that CTE profoundly affected Hernandez’s behavior. A possible effect on behavior is not proof that CTE caused a particular crime. The same account says authorities described the Lloyd murder as planned. Keep the medical finding separate from a claim of criminal causation or an excuse for the crime.

How to read the show against the record

Question What can be stated What needs qualification
What happened in court? Hernandez was convicted of Lloyd’s murder, acquitted of the de Abreu and Furtado murders, and convicted of unlawful firearm possession connected to that case. Do not collapse the separate cases or describe the acquittal as a murder conviction.
What appears in the episodes? The Globe recap describes a Florida club scene, a depicted shooting, and the introduction of family, football, sexuality, Meyer, and hometown associates. A recap establishes what the show depicts, not that each private detail happened as presented.
What do claims about inner life or relationships establish? They establish how the series frames its characters. Attribute real-life claims to the reporting or person making them; do not treat dramatic portrayal as proof.
Does CTE explain a crime? TIME reports a severe CTE finding and a neurologist’s view about behavioral effects. The cited account does not establish that CTE caused a specific crime.

Creator and writer Stuart Zicherman described his aim as exploring what Hernandez did, how, and why, “but without ever excusing the fact that he did do it,” as quoted in the Globe preview. That is the creator’s stated approach, not evidence that the show’s explanations are a definitive account of motive.
