There will not be an American Rust Season 3 under the current official record. Prime Video declined to renew the crime drama in July 2024, ending the series after its 10-episode second season, American Rust: Broken Justice, premiered on March 28, 2024.
The show’s history can be confusing because this was its second cancellation. Showtime canceled the original series after Season 1 in January 2022, but Amazon Freevee revived it for a second season several months later. Prime Video then chose not to continue the revival.
Is American Rust Season 3 canceled?
Yes. Prime Video did not renew American Rust for Season 3 in July 2024. As of the latest researched record, there is no verified revival, replacement platform, production order, cast announcement, filming schedule, or release date for a third season.

That means Season 3 should be described as canceled or not renewed, rather than delayed or merely on hold. There is always a theoretical possibility that a canceled show could be revived elsewhere, but no such development has been officially announced for American Rust.
Why was the series canceled?
Prime Video did not publicly announce a detailed creative or financial reason for declining to order another season. Reporting on the decision characterized it as the show’s second cancellation, following Showtime’s decision to end the series after its first season.
It is therefore more accurate to say that Prime Video chose not to renew the show than to claim a specific cause such as low viewership, production costs, or a cast dispute. Those explanations have not been established in the researched record.
The complete American Rust cancellation timeline

What happened in Season 2?
American Rust: Broken Justice followed police chief Del Harris, played by Jeff Daniels, and Grace Poe, played by Maura Tierney, as they tried to rebuild their lives after the events of the first season.
The second season expanded the story into a murder mystery. A series of apparently unrelated killings began pointing toward a wider conspiracy affecting the residents of Buell, Pennsylvania. The season ran for 10 episodes and placed renewed pressure on Del, Grace, and the younger characters at the center of the drama.
Could the Season 2 ending have led to Season 3?
Yes, the ending left unresolved character and story possibilities that could have supported another season. Interviews surrounding the finale discussed the consequences of the final confrontations and the continuing tension among Del, Grace, and the younger members of the story.
But unresolved plot threads are not evidence that Season 3 was being made. There is no verified indication that scripts were ordered, a writers’ room was operating, cast contracts were extended, or production was scheduled.

The book behind the series
The television drama is based on Philipp Meyer’s novel American Rust. Readers who want to explore the story’s literary source can look for American Rust: A Novel by Philipp Meyer, which is available in a physical paperback edition from the publisher’s catalog.
The novel is best understood as the source material for the television adaptation, not as a continuation of the show after Season 2. It does not provide an unpublished Season 3 or confirm what would have happened to the television characters next.
Will another network or streamer revive it?
No replacement platform has been announced in the researched record. There is also no verified report of a new production order, returning cast, filming plan, or release timetable.
A revival remains possible in the abstract, as the show had already moved from Showtime to Amazon once. However, readers should treat any claim that another service has picked up American Rust as unconfirmed unless it comes from the platform, the producers, or another authoritative source.
