American Rust: Broken Justice is the ten-episode second season of American Rust, returning to fictional Buell, Pennsylvania, for a murder investigation that grows into a wider conspiracy. Its bleak setting, trauma and compromised policing make “unrelentingly gritty” a fair description of the subject matter—but not a complete verdict on the season. Critics disagree about its pace, mood and how well its many storylines fit together.

What is American Rust: Broken Justice about?

Season two follows police chief Del Harris (Jeff Daniels) and Grace Poe (Maura Tierney) as they try to rebuild their lives after the traumatic events of the first season. A string of apparently unrelated murders in Buell points toward a conspiracy threatening the town, bringing police corruption and local conflicts into the investigation. Amazon’s season announcement describes the story as a continuation, not a standalone adaptation.

The ensemble includes David Alvarez, Bill Camp, Julia Mayorga, Alex Neustaedter and Mark Pellegrino, according to Rotten Tomatoes’ season page. The plot also follows several connected strands, including the Brotherhood and the Landwill conflict.

Is season two based on Philipp Meyer’s book?

Not according to the official description. Amazon says the first season is based on Philipp Meyer’s novel American Rust; its season-two announcement presents Broken Justice as a continuation with new murders and a broader conspiracy. The novel is useful optional background for the series’ original source material, but the available official information does not establish season two as a direct adaptation of the book. Amazon’s announcement identifies the first season’s connection to the novel.

How many episodes are there, and where was it released?

The second season has ten episodes. Amazon announced its release on Prime Video on March 28, 2024, in the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, New Zealand and Canada. That announcement also said Prime members in the U.S. and Canada could watch the nine-episode first season. Is it as gritty—and faster-paced—than the first season?

The grimness comes from the story’s small-town murders, trauma, compromised law enforcement and corruption. But critics do not agree on what that atmosphere does to the viewing experience, or on whether season two’s plotting feels brisk or overburdened.

  • AVForums reviewer Casimir Harlow called the second season more assured, praising its stronger direction and the more substantial resolution of open threads. Harlow’s April 7, 2024 review awarded it 7/10, while also arguing that the extended Poe-family material, Isaac’s story and the corporate-corruption and fracking strands leave the season juggling a lot. Read the AVForums review.
  • On Rotten Tomatoes’ season page, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette critic Joshua Axelrod described the pace as potentially faster than a slow burn: “If the first season of American Rust was a slow burn, its sophomore outing may feel like a raging wildfire.” The Age’s Craig Mathieson praised Maura Tierney’s continuing performance, while Decider’s Joel Keller remained unconvinced that the season overcame the original’s grimness. Pittsburgh Tribune-Review critic Rob Owen, by contrast, said character changes made it more entertaining and less depressing. The excerpts are collected on Rotten Tomatoes’ season page.

That difference in response is useful to prospective viewers: the season offers a clearer conspiracy thread, but it still expects patience with several character stories unfolding alongside it. Those looking for a tightly focused investigation may find the sprawl frustrating; viewers interested in how corruption touches a whole town may find the intersecting plots part of the appeal.

What do the ratings say?

When Rotten Tomatoes’ season page was accessed on October 8, 2026, it displayed an 80% Tomatometer from five critic reviews and a 77% Popcornmeter from 50+ ratings. These are changing platform aggregates, not settled or timeless measures of quality. Rotten Tomatoes lists the season as crime and drama, rated TV-MA, originally in English, and released March 28, 2024. Rotten Tomatoes season details and ratings

Who is this season for?

Broken Justice is best suited to viewers who want a bleak crime drama rooted in small-town relationships and are willing to follow multiple character threads as a murder investigation widens into a corruption story. Its gritty subject matter is clear, but the season’s momentum and emotional effect are matters of taste: critics found both a more confident through-line and reasons to question the plot’s breadth.
