Why did she choose “Daddy’s Hands”?
TV Insider reported that Matthews dedicated the song to her late father. In its April 8, 2024 recap, the outlet said she had told Jelly Roll about losing her father, who was Hawaiian, and that he had been a carpenter. Those personal details are reported by TV Insider, rather than independently established here. The recap identifies the episode as Season 22, Episode 9, “Top 24 at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawaii Part #2.” Read TV Insider’s episode recap.
What was Jelly Roll’s role?
Jelly Roll mentored the contestants on the second performance night and also performed “Halfway to Hell,” according to ABC’s recap. He was not the mentor for both nights: Tori Kelly mentored the first night.

The combination of Matthews, Jelly Roll, and Aulani refers to Season 22 in 2024. Hawaiʻi has featured in later American Idol episodes too, so the location alone does not identify the season. ABC’s episode listings checked October 8, 2026, include 2026 Aulani episodes featuring Brad Paisley and Keke Palmer as mentors—not Jelly Roll. ABC’s episode guide provides the later-season context.
