There is no objectively settled “best anime opening.” Beebom’s 2024 list is one editorial countdown: it puts “Guren no Yumiya” from Attack on Titan first, while awards, fan votes and YouTube views measure different things. The most useful way to read any all-time ranking is to ask what it values: the song, its fit with the series, the visuals, cultural recognition, or a particular popularity metric.
What Beebom’s 2024 list ranks
Beebom’s “25 Best Anime Openings of All Time (2024)” presents 25 openings as a numbered editorial selection. Its placements are the publication’s judgment, not an independently established consensus or an objective quality score.

The top five, as ranked by Beebom, are:
- “Guren no Yumiya” — Linked Horizon, Attack on Titan
- “The World” — Death Note
- “Gurenge” — LiSA, Demon Slayer
- “Unravel” — TK from Ling Tosite Sigure, Tokyo Ghoul
- “Tank!” — Yoko Kanno and Seatbelts, Cowboy Bebop
Other entries named in the article include “Again” by Yui for Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, “Departure!” by Masatoshi Ono for Hunter × Hunter, “We Are!” by Hiroshi Kitadani for One Piece, “Silhouette” by KANA-BOON for Naruto Shippuden, and “99” by Mob Choir for Mob Psycho 100. These examples show the range of series represented; they do not establish a single shared reason why a theme belongs on an all-time list.
How to compare anime openings fairly
A memorable theme can succeed on several different axes. Separating them makes disagreements about rankings more useful: someone may favor a song’s musical identity while another values how precisely its images introduce a story.

- Song identity: Is the melody, vocal performance, rhythm or arrangement distinctive and memorable?
- Fit with the series: Do the music and lyrics suit the story’s tone, themes or characters?
- Visual storytelling: Do the images establish atmosphere, introduce characters or create anticipation without relying only on spectacle?
- Cultural reach: Is the opening widely recognized beyond its original audience? Recognition is relevant, but it is not the same as artistic quality.
- Evidence for acclaim: Is a claim based on an editor’s judgment, a fan vote, an award or a specific platform’s view count?
Why “best” changes with the measure
Lists and awards can appear to answer the same question while measuring different things. Beebom’s countdown is an editorial ranking. The 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards, by contrast, recognized a winner in one award year. A fan recap described voting season by season, while Openingpedia’s ranking uses YouTube views in its catalog. None of those methods, by itself, proves an all-time artistic ranking.
Award winner: “Where Our Blue Is”
The 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards named Tatsuya Kitani’s “Where Our Blue Is” the Best Opening Sequence for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2: Hidden Inventory / Premature Death. The official Sony transcript lists six nominees: “Idol” by YOASOBI, “innocent arrogance” by BiSH, “KICK BACK” by Kenshi Yonezu, “Song of the Dead” by KANA-BOON, “WoRK” by millennium parade × Sheena Ringo, and “Where Our Blue Is.” The result establishes the winner of that award, not a verdict on every opening across anime history.
Rank #2
Fan voting: a seasonal view
Crunchyroll’s 2024 fan recap describes votes collected season by season. That makes it a snapshot of fan preferences in that context, not an all-time ranking comparable to an editorial countdown without qualification.
Views: “Idol” on Openingpedia
Openingpedia’s ranking dated September 2026 orders entries by YouTube views. It lists YOASOBI’s “Idol,” associated with Oshi no Ko, at 687.9 million views as of that date. Views can change, and this is a catalog-specific platform metric—not a measurement of artistic quality or a universal popularity total.

Why “Tank!” remains a useful case study
“Tank!” is the opening of Cowboy Bebop, composed by Yoko Kanno and performed by Seatbelts. TIME describes the show’s wider soundtrack as spanning several musical genres, placing the opening in a broader musical context rather than treating it as an isolated track. In a 2020 interview with Dazed, reproduced by TIME, Kanno recalled that the original request was for a jazz-oriented score: “He asked me, ‘I want to make [Cowboy Bebop] jazz-oriented. Can you make it work?’ My answer back then was, ‘I think I can, but I don’t think it will sell.’ I’m glad that my prediction has been proven wrong.” This is production context, not proof that “Tank!” is objectively the best opening. TIME’s account of the original series provides that context.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. So, what is considered the best anime opening?
There is no single settled answer. Beebom’s #1 is “Guren no Yumiya”; the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards winner was “Where Our Blue Is”; and Openingpedia’s September 2026 view-based ranking placed “Idol” at 687.9 million YouTube views. Those are three different kinds of evidence, with different scopes. Choose the opening that works best for you—or name the measure first when comparing other people’s picks.
