Mary later said she did not know he was the Crown Prince when they first met; a friend’s account adds a wrinkle to the familiar “chance meeting” story, describing an organized dinner. Their relationship then grew across distance, before Mary moved to Denmark, they became engaged in 2003 and married in 2004.
How Mary and Frederik met in Sydney
Mary Donaldson and Crown Prince Frederik met at the Slip Inn in Sydney during the 2000 Olympic Games. In an interview from around their engagement, Mary recalled: “The first time that we met or shook hands, I did not know that he was the Crown Prince of Denmark,” according to ABC News Australia’s 2026 retrospective.
The setting is clear, but the phrase “chance meeting” leaves out another account. Amber Petty, Mary’s friend and later bridesmaid, told ABC the gathering was “an organised small dinner during the Olympics” at the Slip Inn, and that Mary was invited. The accounts differ on how the evening was arranged, not on where and when the couple met.

How their long-distance relationship developed
After meeting, Mary and Frederik began a relationship across geographic distance. Mary later described talking as central to their early connection: “From the very first moment that we started talking, we never really stopped talking,” she said, adding that “everything was through words” and that they established a strong relationship that way. These are the couple’s own retrospective descriptions, rather than an outside measure of how the relationship unfolded.

Frederik described the connection as good, with “fun and happiness,” and said love developed gradually, as reported in the same ABC retrospective.
Mary’s move to Denmark and their engagement
Mary moved from Australia to Denmark and worked for Microsoft Business Solutions before her marriage. The precise timing of the move is reported differently: the current Royal House biography places it in 2002, while an ABC News Australia timeline says December 2001. The sources therefore support a move spanning 2001–02, not a single undisputed month.

The couple’s engagement was announced on 8 October 2003, after Queen Margrethe approved the match. Contemporary ABC reporting said a wedding was planned for May 2004; the 2003 report records the announcement and plan, while a later ABC timeline gives the engagement date.
The 2004 wedding
Mary and Frederik married on 14 May 2004 at Copenhagen Cathedral. The Danish Royal House records that the wedding festivities took place at Fredensborg Palace. Their marriage made Mary Crown Princess of Denmark; she became Queen when Frederik became King Frederik X in 2024. The official Royal House biography provides the wedding and current-title details.
Family, the Mary Foundation and their roles today
The Royal House lists four children: Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine. In 2007, Mary established The Mary Foundation using a 1.1 million kroner national wedding gift. The foundation’s stated mission is to combat social isolation, according to the Royal House biography.
Mary’s public role has grown from Crown Princess to Queen, alongside Frederik’s transition from Crown Prince to King. The relationship’s documented public timeline runs from their meeting in Sydney through long-distance courtship, relocation, engagement and marriage; accounts of the couple’s private life beyond what they have chosen to share should not be treated as established fact.
