They said the return was driven by financial need, not nostalgia. That is a dated account: the available reporting does not establish whether they are busking or what their career looks like now.
What happened when Just Sam returned to the subway
In spring 2023, Just Sam posted videos of performances in New York City subway stations. Coverage described them singing for donations. In a caption later deleted, they reportedly wrote about feeling embarrassed and needing the money. ABC Audio’s syndicated report also described the videos as showing busking for donations.

In a December 2023 profile, Just Sam explained the urgency plainly: “But I literally could not afford to pay my rent. I couldn’t afford to eat.” The Washington Post reported that they said they could sometimes earn around $100 a day singing on trains. That was their account of what they might make, not a guaranteed or average daily income. The Washington Post’s December 2023 profile
How Just Sam went from winning Idol to subway performances
2020: A pandemic-era victory
Just Sam, whose name is Samantha Diaz, won the 18th season of American Idol in May 2020. As COVID-19 spread, the show moved its later stages and finale to remote filming. The Washington Post reported that Just Sam stayed in a Los Angeles hotel rather than risk exposing their grandmother.

2021–2022: A difficult transition to a recording career
Just Sam later attributed some of the difficulty after their win to the pandemic’s timing and a disrupted transition into studio recording. The Washington Post reported that they confirmed in 2021 that they had parted ways with Hollywood Records and 19 Recordings before releasing an album. The profile also described their efforts to fund an independent music career and reported that they were hospitalized in summer 2022 for an undisclosed illness; no cause was established in the coverage.
In a June 2023 interview with TMZ, Just Sam discussed pandemic-related recording delays, contracts and possible collaborations. Their account offers context for the transition, but the available coverage does not independently document the full contract terms or their finances. TMZ’s June 2023 interview report

December 2023: New work in progress
The Washington Post reported that Just Sam was working with new management, CrowdMGMT, and writing and recording music. Those were updates at the time, not confirmation of completed releases or of their situation in 2026.
Did American Idol fail to support its winner?
The subway videos led some viewers to ask what the show had done for its winner and how this situation had happened. Those reactions are questions, not proof that American Idol had a particular contractual duty or that anyone violated one.

The Washington Post reported that Just Sam said they did not blame the show, its producers or its judges, and remained grateful for the experience. “I’m grateful for them. They changed my life forever,” they said. “Even though it’s not in the way I expected.” The same profile said ABC and 19 Entertainment declined to comment, Hollywood Records declined to comment on the record, and Fremantle said no one was available for an interview. The reporting therefore presents Just Sam’s account and the limits of the companies’ responses; it does not settle responsibility.
For context, the Washington Post described recent American Idol winner contracts as totaling $250,000, split into a $125,000 payment upon winning and a $125,000 payment upon album delivery. That is generalized contract information, not evidence that Just Sam personally received the full amount.

The story is a reminder that winning a televised competition does not by itself establish a lasting recording career or financial security. In Just Sam’s case, the 2023 coverage connects the return to subway singing with their own explanation of immediate financial pressure and a difficult post-show transition. It does not provide a full accounting of earnings, contract obligations or the companies’ roles, and it cannot establish their current circumstances.
In the December 2023 profile, Just Sam framed the story as unfinished: “This is not the end of the story. That’s what I want people to know.”
