American Idol season 23’s Top 24 took the stage at Disney’s Aulani Resort in Hawai‘i across two broadcasts on April 13 and 14, 2025. Two contestants stood out for reworking songs by judges: Victor Solomon sang Luke Bryan’s “That’s My Kind of Night,” and Mattie Pruitt performed Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake.” The broader set included songs by many other artists, so the judge-song covers were highlights, not the theme of every performance.
What happened in the Hawaii Top 24 round?
The performances aired in two groups, with 12 contestants appearing on April 13 and the remaining 12 on April 14. It was the first time in season 23 that the Top 24 were singing for America’s votes. Viewers’ votes would determine which contestants advanced to the Top 20.

Mentors differed between the broadcasts: Ashanti and artist in residence Jelly Roll worked with the April 13 group, while Josh Groban and Jelly Roll mentored the April 14 performers. TV Insider’s April 13 recap and its April 14 recap describe the performances and mentoring.
Victor Solomon took on Luke Bryan’s “That’s My Kind of Night”
Solomon chose a song by one of the judges and framed the choice as a chance to take a risk and be unpredictable. Bryan praised the performance’s arrangement and the details Solomon brought to it, saying, “The little nuances of the arrangement, the thoughts behind that made it you and fresh. I’m super honored.” He also joked, “I gotta retire that song after that.”

Mattie Pruitt gave Katy Perry’s “Wide Awake” a fresh take
Pruitt performed Perry’s song for the April 14 group. Carrie Underwood praised her interpretation: “You take a song and make it your own. That’s an iconic monster of a song and you really did make it your own and gave us a fresh take on it.”
The Top 24 set reached well beyond judges’ songs
The two broadcasts featured a wide range of material. On April 13, Ché sang Stevie Wonder’s “Master Blaster,” Kolbi Jordan performed Patti LaBelle’s “New Attitude,” and Jamal Roberts chose Jelly Roll’s “Liar.” On April 14, John Foster performed Garth Brooks’ “Callin’ Baton Rouge,” Josh King sang Elton John’s “I’m Still Standing,” and Thunderstorm Artis performed Bob Marley’s “Is This Love.”

Those choices make the scope clear: Solomon and Pruitt covered songs associated with judges, but the Hawaii round was not limited to that idea. The recaps report the performances and the vote stakes, but do not establish vote totals or which contestants advanced.

The closest match is season 23’s Top 24 performance round, broadcast April 13 and 14, 2025, from Aulani in Hawai‘i. “Top 24 Shake Things Up In Hawaii With Bold Covers of Judges’ Hit Songs” is a descriptive framing, not a verified official episode title. ABC’s episode guide lists a separate Hawaii installment for season 24 in 2026 as the “’Ohana Round,” so the season and year matter when identifying these performances.
