American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders is a four-part Netflix documentary about photojournalist Christian Hansen revisiting journalist Danny Casolaro’s investigation into a conspiracy Casolaro called “The Octopus.” The series recounts competing interpretations of Casolaro’s death and examines allegations involving surveillance software, unsolved crimes and political scandals; its synopsis does not establish that the alleged network existed or that Casolaro was murdered.
What is American Conspiracy: The Octopus Murders about?
Netflix frames the series around Hansen’s attempt to pick up Casolaro’s investigation decades after Casolaro was found dead in a hotel bathtub. In Netflix’s official synopsis, police ruled the death a suicide, while Casolaro’s family and colleagues believe he may have been murdered because of his work on what he called “The Octopus.” The latter is their belief as reported by Netflix, not a finding established by the series listing.

The synopsis describes the alleged conspiracy as a hidden organization connected to stolen government spy software, unsolved murders and major political scandals of the 20th century. Those connections are the documentary’s investigative premise. Netflix’s descriptions do not independently verify the existence of such an organization or confirm that the alleged crimes and connections occurred as presented.

What is established—and what remains an allegation?
The official pages establish the series’ title, credits, 2024 release, four-episode format and Netflix’s own account of its subject. They also make clear that the story centers on claims and suspicions: Netflix attributes the belief that Casolaro may have been murdered to his family and colleagues, while its episode descriptions use terms such as “alleged” for the surveillance network and intelligence connections.
