Parish makes a persuasive case for greatness through Giancarlo Esposito’s controlled, compelling lead performance and a premise built around the cost of returning to a life Gray Parish thought he had left behind. That is an argued judgment, not a consensus verdict: critics and audience ratings diverge, and the series’ appeal rests more on its character and tension than on a claim of unprecedented crime-story plotting.
What Parish is about
AMC’s six-episode crime drama stars Giancarlo Esposito as Gracian “Gray” Parish, a family man who owns a luxury car service in New Orleans. After his son is murdered and his business collapses, Gray encounters an old friend from his wheelman days. The renewed connection draws him back toward criminal work and puts him on a collision course with a violent syndicate.
The setup gives the show a clear source of pressure: Gray is not simply entering a dangerous world, but returning to one while grieving and trying to hold on to his family. Esposito’s presence makes that conflict the series’ strongest point. Gray’s history as a driver also gives the crime premise a practical focus—he is valued for what he can do behind the wheel, even as each job pulls him deeper into violence.
Why the series earns a place among 2024’s best crime dramas
Esposito makes Gray’s return to crime matter
Esposito anchors the series as a man caught between the identity he has built and the skills his past still makes useful. The tension is not just whether Gray can handle criminal work; it is whether he can keep telling himself that he is doing it for his family without becoming part of the danger surrounding them. That character conflict gives the familiar crime setup emotional weight.

In an Associated Press interview about pursuing the opportunity to lead a series, Esposito summed up his approach with the words, “Ask for what you want.” The remark concerns his career, not the show’s artistic quality, but it underlines the force of the leading role he takes on here.
New Orleans is part of the premise
Gray’s luxury-car business and wheelman background connect the city’s polished surfaces to its criminal underworld. New Orleans is not merely a location attached to a generic crime plot: it is where Gray has built a legitimate life and where his old skills become valuable again. That contrast makes the setting serve the drama’s central question—how far can he move from his past when his present is collapsing?

A compact season keeps the conflict focused
AMC announced a six-episode first season. That gives the story a relatively tight frame for its collision of family grief, financial ruin and criminal obligation. The short run is a useful fit for a pressure-driven character story, although a compact season alone does not guarantee that every turn will feel fresh or fully developed.
How the critical case compares with the ratings
The positive case for Parish should not be mistaken for broad critical agreement. Rotten Tomatoes listed a 36% Tomatometer from 22 critic reviews and a 72% Popcornmeter from 50+ ratings when accessed October 7, 2026. These are platform aggregates that can change, not universal measures of quality. The split suggests a stronger audience response in that snapshot than the critics’ score, while leaving room for viewers to disagree about the writing and its familiarity.

Rotten Tomatoes’ critic consensus praises Esposito’s presence while questioning the material around him. Reviews surfaced on the page included criticism of familiar or formulaic writing alongside praise for his performance and the show’s pace. The case for calling Parish great, then, is most convincing when it is made as a judgment about its lead performance, character tension and setting—not as a claim that critics have settled the question.
How Parish relates to The Driver
AMC identifies Parish as based on the BBC series The Driver. It is a scripted adaptation, not a true-crime series. That relationship gives the show an existing premise to adapt; it does not, by itself, establish how closely the two series match or which is better.
