A Scroll excerpt published on October 20, 2025, presents these memories as a story of Doordarshan’s rise in Indian television news. Its “golden era” is the book’s nostalgic framing, not a settled historical verdict.
A history told through staff memories
Chaman, a former Doordarshan news presenter in the 1980s, builds the account around anecdotes from herself and colleagues. Scroll’s piece is an excerpt from her book, not a full survey or independent review. The dates, figures and technical details below are therefore best read as claims attributed to the people whose memories the excerpt reproduces, rather than as independently verified broadcast records.
The excerpt’s central transition is from largely local, black-and-white telecasts toward national programming and colour. It also contrasts DD 1’s emphasis on news and national broadcasts with the broader programming opportunities the book associates with a second channel. That is a useful outline of the book’s argument, not a comprehensive account of audiences, editorial independence, regional access or news accuracy.
1982: connecting centres to a national bulletin
Dr Govind Gunthey, identified in the excerpt as Doordarshan’s news editor at the time, recalls national broadcasts beginning in 1982. His description has Doordarshan centres connecting with Delhi each evening for the national news transmission. As he put it: “The launch of national broadcasts in 1982 marked a major milestone in Doordarshan’s growth and outreach. Under this, all Doordarshan centres of the country would connect with Delhi TV kendra at eight every night.”

Gunthey’s recollection describes Hindi and English bulletins, alongside news in Urdu and Sanskrit, regional coverage, and programming for people with hearing and speech impairments. These details show how the excerpt presents the national service: as a scheduled connection to Delhi that also made room for multiple languages and audiences. They remain details from his retrospective account as printed by Scroll.
1984: DD 2 and a wider television footprint
Chaman’s account dates the launch of DD 2 to August 9, 1984, at an event in Delhi. The channel was initially aimed at metro and urban audiences and later expanded to other major cities. The excerpt says it was rebranded DD 2 Metro in 1993.

In the book’s telling, a second channel gave Doordarshan more room for varied programming while DD 1 remained focused on news and national broadcasts. The excerpt also places the launch amid a wider expansion: former staff member Y. Venkateswarlu recalls a 1984 rollout of 100 television transmitters. That is his retrospective figure as quoted in the 2025 excerpt, not independently checked network data.
Live news, outside-broadcast vans and microwave links
Venkateswarlu also recalls the outside-broadcast work following Indira Gandhi’s assassination in October 1984, including coverage of her funeral procession. According to his account, Doordarshan used outside-broadcast vans and microwave links to transmit live coverage along a route of about 10 kilometres, which took about four hours. The excerpt notes that Digital Satellite News Gathering technology was not yet available to the team.

The episode illustrates the book’s emphasis on the practical demands of live television: crews had to coordinate equipment and transmission links across a moving event. The route length, duration and technical description are approximate details in Venkateswarlu’s memory, as reproduced in the excerpt; they should not be mistaken for a separately verified technical record.
Later recollections of live news work
The excerpt reaches beyond the early expansion years. Sangeeta Bedi recalls returning to the studio for live commentary after the attack on Parliament on December 13, 2001. Her memory extends the book’s interest in the people and newsroom work behind major broadcasts, but it is a personal recollection rather than an independently corroborated account in the material available here.

What the excerpt does—and does not—establish
Read as oral and institutional memory, the excerpt offers a vivid account of how former staff remember Doordarshan’s national reach developing: nightly connections to Delhi, a second channel, transmitter expansion, and live coverage under demanding conditions. Its value lies in those experiences and in the perspective of people who worked inside the broadcaster.
It does not, on its own, settle the broader historical questions a reader might bring to the subject. The excerpts cited here do not establish how audiences responded, how consistently regional services reached viewers, or how Doordarshan’s news compared in editorial independence or accuracy. The book’s “golden era” label should therefore be understood as a value judgment conveyed by Chaman and her contributors, not as a consensus historians’ periodization.
