Amazon ended Freevee as a standalone streaming service and retired its brand and app, but it did not eliminate all of its free programming. Much of the free, ad-supported offering moved into Prime Video, where Amazon says non-Prime customers can still watch selected originals, licensed titles and free streaming channels. The important distinction: the Freevee app is gone, but some programming remains free; no individual title is guaranteed to stay available or free.
What happened to Freevee?
Amazon announced in November 2024 that it would phase out the Freevee brand and consolidate free programming within Prime Video. The company described Prime Video as a broader entertainment destination and said non-Prime customers would retain access to a substantial selection of free, ad-supported content. That meant retiring the separate destination—not announcing that every Freevee program would be canceled or removed. Amazon’s announcement uses the qualifications “select” and “vast offering,” not a promise that every title would transfer permanently.
The standalone app was phased out in 2025. Amazon-related notices and reporting pointed to an August phase-out; TheWrap reported on the app’s retirement, while September 3, 2025 has also been reported as the date it became unavailable. Because that precise date is not confirmed here by a definitive Amazon customer announcement, it is best treated as a reported date rather than an official shutdown date. Freevee timeline
- January 2024: Amazon began introducing ads in the standard Prime Video experience in the United States, with an additional-cost ad-free option. Amazon’s announcement explains the change.
- November 2024: Amazon announced it would phase out Freevee branding and bring its free offering into Prime Video.
- August–September 2025: The standalone app was phased out; September 3 was reported as the date it became unavailable, rather than established here as an official Amazon date.
- August 2026: Free, ad-supported programming remains advertised within Prime Video, but titles and channel counts can change.
Do you need Amazon Prime to watch former Freevee content?
No Prime membership is necessarily required for Prime Video’s free-with-ads selection. Amazon says non-Prime customers can watch selected Amazon MGM Studios originals, licensed movies and series, and FAST channels at no charge. A viewer may still need an Amazon account to sign in, and availability can differ by country. Amazon’s current service description outlines free access alongside Prime Video’s other offerings.
“On Prime Video” does not mean “included with Prime” or “free.” Prime Video brings several kinds of access into one interface, so check the title’s label before pressing play or starting a trial:

- Open Prime Video in its app or website and sign in with an Amazon account.
- Search for the program by its title. Menu names and browsing layouts vary by device, country, account and app version.
- Open the title page and check whether it says free with ads, included with Prime, rent or buy, or subscribe. A search result alone does not establish that the program is free.
- Browse Prime Video’s free or ad-supported areas and FAST-channel listings if you want to discover programming rather than search for a specific title. FAST channels are scheduled streams, not necessarily on-demand libraries of everything a channel shows.
- If the title is missing or has a different access label, check availability in your country and try again later. Streaming rights and catalogs change over time.
Did Freevee originals move to Prime Video?
The end of the Freevee app was a distribution and branding change, not a blanket cancellation notice for every Freevee original. Amazon’s announcement said selected originals and other free programming would be available through Prime Video; it did not guarantee every show would remain there indefinitely. The Los Angeles Times’ coverage reported on the transition. TVLine’s report included an Amazon spokesperson’s statement about the Freevee offering.

For a particular program—whether Jury Duty, Bosch: Legacy, Judy Justice or Neighbours—check its Prime Video title page in your region. Four separate questions matter: whether the show was renewed, whether it is currently available, whether it is free or paid, and whether its availability is on demand or through a channel. The Freevee shutdown alone does not answer any of those questions for an individual show.
Why did Amazon combine Freevee with Prime Video?
Amazon’s stated rationale was to make Prime Video a single, broader destination for entertainment. The service already brought together Prime-included programs, rentals and purchases, live events, add-on subscriptions and free streaming channels. The arrival of ads in the standard U.S. Prime Video catalog in January 2024 also made the boundary between a paid service and a separate ad-supported destination less distinct. That establishes the company’s consolidation strategy, not a proven financial explanation. Amazon’s public statement does not quantify audience overlap, savings or the specific business performance that led to the decision.

Not necessarily. Amazon announced Prime Video Ultra in the United States at $4.99 per month on March 13, 2026, for customers who also have Prime or a Prime Video subscription. The paid option is intended to remove ads from eligible programming, but Amazon says live events, select ad-supported content and subscriptions may still contain advertising. It does not turn rentals, purchases or third-party subscriptions into free titles. Amazon’s Ultra announcement sets out the price and exceptions.

What the change means for viewers
- If you only want free viewing: Start with Prime Video’s free-with-ads catalog; a Prime membership is not required for all of it.
- If you want a specific former Freevee program: Search its title and verify the current access label and regional availability.
- If you want Prime-included shows: Those are a separate benefit from the free ad-supported selection.
- If you dislike ads: Check whether a program is eligible for an ad-free option; some live, ad-supported and subscription content may still carry ads.
- If a Freevee icon remains on a device: A leftover app icon or online Freevee reference does not mean the standalone service is still operating.
Amazon’s March 2026 announcement listed U.S. Prime pricing at $14.99 per month or $139 per year, but prices can change. A Prime subscription makes sense for the broader membership and its included video catalog, not as a prerequisite for every free title. Prime Video Ultra is a separate paid choice for eligible viewing, not a way to recover an identical Freevee app experience.
