Amazon’s 2025 Luna redesign put living-room play and GameNight at the center of the service, pairing local party games with a changing selection of games for Prime members. It is not the same as a service built around online multiplayer with remote friends. And the model has since changed: Amazon ended Luna game purchases and third-party subscriptions on April 10, 2026, with a limited transition for some existing access through June 10.
What Amazon changed in the Luna relaunch
The relaunch was a redesign and repositioning, not just a new interface. Amazon framed Luna as a way to play on screens people already own, with Prime integration and games aimed at a wider audience than dedicated gamers. Its two main ideas were a curated selection of recognizable games and GameNight, a set of approachable experiences for people playing together in the same room. Amazon’s relaunch announcement described the service as a social, living-room option while retaining traditional cloud-streamed games.
That makes the word “multiplayer” important to interpret correctly: the relaunch emphasized local group play, not a new online network for remote competitors.

GameNight is Luna’s collection of casual, local multiplayer and party games. The intended setup is a shared display, such as a television, with players gathered nearby. Some games let participants use compatible phones as controllers, which can reduce the need to supply a separate gamepad to everyone. Joining options vary by title, so follow the instructions shown in the game rather than assuming every experience uses the same phone-based method.

Amazon said GameNight launched with more than 25 titles; that is a launch-era figure, not a promise about the current library. One launch example was Courtroom Chaos: Starring Snoop Dogg, described by Amazon as voice-driven improv gameplay. Later examples included Masters of the Universe: Legends Unite. Amazon’s relaunch FAQ said online multiplayer was not currently supported. That FAQ’s statement should not be treated as a timeless guarantee about every later service change, but it makes clear that GameNight’s pitch was same-room play rather than remote online sessions.
Starting a local GameNight session
- Open Luna on a supported television, Fire TV device, browser, or other compatible screen and sign in to the Amazon account with access to the title.
- Choose a GameNight game and read its on-screen instructions for adding players.
- If the title supports phone controllers, have guests follow its displayed joining steps. The exact flow differs by game and device.
- Start once the intended players have joined. Use a compatible Bluetooth or USB controller if the game or device requires physical input.
If a phone will not join or respond
- Check that the selected game supports phone input and follow that title’s own instructions.
- Confirm that the phones joined the correct session; where required, put them and the display device on the same home network.
- Restart the Luna session and update the app or browser on the display device.
- Try a compatible controller, or test another GameNight title to see whether the problem is limited to one game.
- If inputs are delayed or drop, check Wi-Fi stability; a phone-controller issue can be a network problem rather than a failure of the controller concept.
What Prime members get, and why the catalog can change
At the 2025 relaunch, Amazon said Prime members could play more than 50 games at no additional charge. The launch-era examples included Hogwarts Legacy, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II, TopSpin 2K25, Fortnite, LEGO Fortnite, and GameNight titles. Those examples and the 50-plus count describe the launch offer, not a fixed catalog or a guarantee that each game remains available.

Prime access is a selection, not permanent ownership of every game shown in Luna. Amazon’s catalog and access terms can change, so check the current library and membership details at Luna’s service page before subscribing or planning around a particular title. Amazon also announced in July 2026 that games would be available within Prime Video on supported Fire TV setups; that announcement is specific to supported devices and does not mean every Prime Video screen runs Luna. Luna previously offered more than Prime’s rotating selection, including individual purchases, third-party subscriptions such as Ubisoft+, and ways to connect some outside game libraries. Amazon’s support notice says that from April 10, 2026, Luna no longer offered game stores, individual game purchases, or third-party subscriptions. For affected users, certain existing purchases or subscription benefits remained accessible only during the transition period described by Amazon, ending June 10, 2026. That was a structural shift, not simply a price adjustment: Luna moved away from being a storefront and access point for outside subscriptions toward Prime access, Luna’s own offerings, and a catalog whose availability Amazon controls. Readers relying on old explainers about buying games, Ubisoft+ integration, Jackbox access, or Bring Your Own Library should not assume those routes still work after the transition.
Devices, controllers, and connection requirements
Luna has been promoted for Fire TV, computers and browsers, select smart TVs and streaming devices, and supported phones and tablets. Amazon also announced Luna availability on Xfinity devices in the United States and Rogers Xfinity devices in Canada in December 2025; the two markets and device lineups are not interchangeable. Check Amazon’s Xfinity announcement and the live Luna page for your specific device and location. Think of the setup as three separate pieces: the device displaying the stream, the controller or phone providing input, and the Amazon account or membership that grants access to the game. A Luna Controller is not universally required. Amazon has described support for compatible third-party controllers, including PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 controllers, though compatibility can vary by device and game. For supported local experiences, phones may serve as controllers. Amazon previously listed the Luna Controller at $69.99 in older material; that is not a verified current price. Check the live product listing before buying, and do not buy one if a compatible controller you already own meets your needs. Amazon has previously recommended at least 10 Mbps of sustained internet speed. That is a recommendation, not a performance guarantee: cloud gaming also depends on latency, jitter, Wi-Fi congestion, router quality, distance to the cloud region, and the device running the app or browser. A speed test can look adequate while a game still feels unresponsive. Amazon’s Luna overview gives the historical speed recommendation.

Who Luna suits—and who should look elsewhere
- A good fit: A household already paying for Prime that wants to try a changing game selection, especially casual local play on a television without buying a console.
- Potentially useful for families: GameNight’s shared-screen approach and phone-controller option can make a group session easier to assemble, provided the chosen title and devices support that setup.
- A weaker fit: Players who want online multiplayer with remote friends, a permanent library of purchased games, or reliable low-latency competitive play.
- Check carefully first: Anyone considering a paid tier, new hardware, or a specific game should verify current plan names, prices, catalog availability, device compatibility, and regional access directly with Amazon. The launch-era game count and old controller price are not current quotes.
Luna is also not a universal substitute for a console. A console or local gaming PC is a better match for people who prioritize offline play, stable local performance, long-term access to purchases, or broad storefront and mod support. For cloud alternatives, Xbox Cloud Gaming may suit players already invested in Xbox and its online ecosystem; GeForce NOW may suit PC players seeking to stream supported games from compatible storefronts; PlayStation Plus cloud streaming fits more naturally in a PlayStation household. Those services have their own changing plans and game restrictions, so compare current terms rather than relying on a generic game-count or price comparison. For family play without streaming dependence, dedicated Nintendo hardware is another route.
