Yes—Amazon offers AI translation for some self-published Kindle books through Kindle Translate. But it is still an invite-only beta, not a service available for every KDP author or title. The translation is free during the beta, yet authors cannot directly edit its generated text in the Kindle Translate workflow. Treat it as a way to test a suitable eBook in another language—not as a guaranteed substitute for a human translator.
What Kindle Translate does
Kindle Translate is an AI-powered service built into Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP). For an eligible source eBook, it can create a separate Kindle edition in another language; it does not replace the original-language book. The service currently covers eBooks, not paperback, hardcover, or audiobook translations. That distinction matters: “Amazon translates Kindle books” does not mean any author can submit any book and receive a publication-ready edition. Amazon checks account and title eligibility, supported languages, formatting, rights, and translation quality. Authors retain control over whether to publish the resulting edition.

Who can use it, and which languages are supported?
Kindle Translate is currently invite-only. Authors may be able to express interest, but an interest request does not guarantee access. For an eligible title, look on the KDP Bookshelf for “Translate your eBook.” If it is missing, check the eligibility explanation shown in the Bookshelf rather than assuming there is an account error. Amazon says eligibility processing can take up to 72 hours after publication or an update.

Amazon’s currently listed language combinations are limited and asymmetric. English has the widest set of destinations:

Amazon says it updates the supported-language list, so confirm the current options before planning a release. In particular, the listed Portuguese destination from English is Brazilian Portuguese, not an unspecified Portuguese edition. Check Amazon’s language list.
Which books are likely to qualify?
Amazon’s eligibility guidance says a source eBook generally needs to be live—not a pre-order—and reflowable rather than fixed-layout. It needs a cover and a primary author or contributor, and its primary language must be supported. The book cannot consist primarily of public-domain material, and the author must hold the applicable translation rights. It must also pass Amazon’s suitability and formatting checks. Prose-heavy novels, short stories, narrative nonfiction, business, self-help, and straightforward instructional books are more plausible candidates than books built around poetry, wordplay, technical terminology, or elaborate structures. Amazon cautions that books with many images, multiple languages, tables, graphs, code, or complex formatting may not translate as well. Text inside images and graphics is not translated; subtitles are not translated, and excerpts in languages other than the primary language may not translate correctly.
Passing eligibility or quality checks does not establish that a translation is professionally edited or suitable for every reader. Amazon does not publish a numerical accuracy score, language-specific error rate, or independent human evaluation in the cited Kindle Translate guidance.
How to translate an eBook with Kindle Translate
- Open the KDP Bookshelf and locate an eligible eBook.
- Select “Translate your eBook.”
- Choose from the source-language-to-target-language options offered for that title.
- Set the translated edition’s KDP Select enrollment, territorial rights, and list price.
- Use Amazon’s default translated cover or upload a different cover for the edition.
- Preview the generated translation, then select “Submit for publishing” if you decide to proceed.
Amazon says translation creation can take a few hours and up to 24 hours. After submission, a translated edition may take up to 72 hours to appear in the Amazon store. The source eBook may be locked for editing until its translations go live. Eligibility processing after publishing or updating can also take up to 72 hours. Can you edit the generated translation?
Not directly in Kindle Translate. Authors can preview before publishing, but Amazon’s documented workflow does not provide an editor for correcting individual passages in the generated text. A preview can help reveal layout problems and, for someone fluent in the target language, some wording issues. It cannot reliably validate meaning, tone, idiom, cultural references, or consistency if the reviewer does not know that language.
If a serious problem appears, do not assume you can fix it inside the Kindle Translate interface. Amazon’s public guidance does not describe a universal correction path for every translation error. Depending on the situation, an author may need to unpublish the translated edition, revise the source or create a separate translated edition through another workflow, while checking current KDP requirements. A human reviewer can help assess the text, but that is separate from Kindle Translate’s built-in process.
What Amazon’s quality checks mean—and what they do not
Amazon says Kindle Translate output must pass a seven-step quality-assurance threshold before it can be previewed and published. The checks cover matters such as fidelity to the original, writing style, idiomatic expression, literary elements, and whether Amazon can generate a fully formatted translation from the source eBook. This is a publication gate, not a disclosed guarantee of human-level translation. Problems can remain in voice, characterization, humor, dialogue register, names, gender, idioms, specialized vocabulary, or continuity across a series. Amazon also says it may automatically retranslate a Kindle Translate eBook when the service improves; a translation that was once previewable or published may later show “Cannot be published” if it no longer meets the threshold. There is no public accuracy percentage in the cited documentation.
Covers, metadata, series, and automatic publication
A translated edition starts from the source eBook’s existing details, including title and author name; its details are not independently editable in the same way as a wholly separate KDP title. Amazon provides a default translated cover based on the existing cover image, with a white border and the language shown at the top, or authors can upload another cover. When a source title changes, Amazon says it automatically updates translations; check any separately uploaded translated covers afterward. For a book in a series, Amazon says it creates a matching language series within five business days after translations go live. Read the workflow and edition guidance.
Authors can enable automatic translation and publication when new languages become available. That may reduce administration, but it also risks publishing a new edition without fresh human review. For a flagship title, sensitive subject, or series that depends on continuity, retaining manual oversight is the safer choice—especially if you cannot read the target language.

Cost, royalties, KDP Select, and Kindle Unlimited
The translation service is free during the beta, but the translated book is still a commercial KDP edition. Authors choose its territory, price, and whether to enroll it in KDP Select. Amazon says translated editions have the same royalty options as the source eBook: generally 35%, or 70% in eligible territories when the applicable requirements are met. KDP Select enrollment is a separate decision and is subject to its terms. It may make the translated eBook eligible for Kindle Unlimited, but it should not be treated as automatic. Consider the exclusivity implications for that digital edition before enrolling it. A zero-cost translation also does not mean a zero-cost international launch: fluent review, cover work, localized metadata, promotion, and reader support may all require time or money.
AI disclosure and translation rights
KDP’s content guidelines classify translations made with an AI-based tool as AI-generated content, which authors must disclose when publishing a new book or editing and republishing an existing one. Amazon distinguishes AI-generated content—created by an AI tool, even if substantially edited—from AI-assisted content, where the author created the work and used AI to edit, refine, check, or brainstorm. The KDP disclosure requirement is separate from the reader-facing language labels and sample previews Amazon says Kindle Translate titles will have. Before translating, confirm that you control the translation rights under any publishing, co-author, agent, or licensing agreements. Check that quoted material, lyrics, excerpts, images, and other third-party content are cleared for the translated edition and its intended markets. KDP’s guidance also addresses crediting the translator and original author in the contributor field, including special treatment where the translator is unknown. Choosing between Kindle Translate, a human translator, and a hybrid approach

A hybrid process can combine speed with oversight: generate a draft using an available tool, have a fluent translator or editor revise it, then check names, terminology, chapter headings, front matter, formatting, and marketing copy. For high-risk passages, compare the translation against the source line by line. Kindle Translate itself does not currently allow direct text editing, so a hybrid route may require creating and publishing a separate translated edition outside its workflow, subject to rights and KDP rules.
Before you publish: a practical checklist
- Confirm you hold the translation rights and have cleared third-party material.
- Check that the language pair is currently supported and the title is live, reflowable, and eligible.
- Read the Bookshelf’s eligibility explanation and allow for stated processing times.
- Preview the whole translation, not just the opening pages, and arrange a fluent review where possible.
- Check formatting, images, tables, code, names, voice, continuity, cover, and localized presentation.
- Set territorial rights and price deliberately; decide on KDP Select separately.
- Complete KDP’s AI-generated content disclosure as required.
- Monitor reviews and reader feedback after launch, and respond promptly to evidence of material errors.
For authors who receive access, Kindle Translate lowers the cost and technical barrier to testing some translated eBooks. Its invite-only status, limited language pairs, non-editable output, quality uncertainty, and rights obligations make it an experimental publishing option—not an automatic replacement for a professional translator.
