The practical change is that Amazon moved Freevee’s free, ad-supported programming into Prime Video. You may still be able to watch some former Freevee movies, television shows, and live channels without paying for Prime—but you must find titles inside Prime Video and check their access labels.
What happened to Freevee?
Amazon said it was retiring the Freevee branding to simplify the viewing experience. Rather than operate Freevee as a separate destination, Amazon’s stated direction was to make Freevee-originated programming available through Prime Video.

Contemporary reports said the programming would remain available to viewers who did not subscribe to Amazon Prime. By July 2025, users were seeing an in-app notice describing Prime Video as the new exclusive home for Freevee television shows, movies, and live TV. The same notice reportedly said the standalone app would remain accessible until August 2025.
That should be understood as a transition period, not a single universally documented shutdown day for every country and device. Availability and app behavior can vary by region. The safest current description is that Freevee was phased out during 2025 and its free inventory was folded into Prime Video.
Where can you watch former Freevee content now?
Use the Prime Video app or visit the Prime Video website:
- Open Prime Video on your smart TV, streaming player, game console, phone, tablet, computer, or supported web browser.
- Sign in with an Amazon account, or create one if Prime Video prompts you to do so.
- Search for the movie, series, Freevee Original, or live channel you want.
- Look for an access label such as “Watch for free”, “Watch for free with ads”, or equivalent wording used in your region.
- Start playback and expect advertising during free programming.
Do not assume that a title is free merely because it used to carry the Freevee name. Prime Video combines several types of content in one catalog, including subscription titles, free ad-supported titles, rentals, purchases, and paid add-on channels. The label shown on the individual title is more useful than its former branding.

Do you need Amazon Prime to watch it?

That does not mean Prime Video is entirely free. A single search result may place a free movie beside a title included with Prime, a rental, a purchase, or a channel subscription. Check the title page before pressing play or entering payment information.

Amazon’s terms also make clear that content and the way it is offered can change by time and location. A title that was free under Freevee may later disappear, become unavailable in a particular country, or be offered under a different access category.
Is every Freevee Original still available?
No guarantee has been established that every Freevee Original, licensed movie, television episode, or live channel remains available in exactly the same form. Amazon continued to make a substantial free-with-ads catalog available through Prime Video, but individual titles depend on licensing, territory, and catalog changes.
If you are looking for a particular documentary, series, or movie, search for its exact name in Prime Video and inspect the result. If it does not appear—or appears only as a rental or purchase—that does not necessarily indicate a problem with your account. It may simply no longer be available for free in your region.
Do you need a new streaming device?
No. The Freevee change is primarily an app and branding change. If your television already has a working Prime Video app, continue using it. You can also use a compatible game console, phone, tablet, computer, or existing streaming player.

A Roku streaming player or another HDMI device can also be a reasonable alternative for people who prefer a different interface. App availability can vary by model and region, so check the current catalog for your location before choosing hardware.
What will feel different after the transition?
- The separate Freevee destination is gone. You should look in Prime Video instead of expecting a standalone Freevee app.
- Free and paid titles appear together. Prime Video’s search results can mix ad-supported programs with subscription titles, rentals, purchases, and add-on channels.
- Advertising remains part of free viewing. Moving the catalog into Prime Video does not turn free programming into ad-free programming.
- Availability can change. Rights, territory, and time can affect whether a former Freevee title or channel is still offered.
- A Prime membership is not a universal requirement. It may be needed for some titles, but not for every program marked free with ads.
What if a former Freevee title is missing?
- Search the exact title. Try the full movie or series name rather than searching only for “Freevee.”

Do not pay for a new device simply because the Freevee app disappeared. Hardware can improve access on an older HDMI television, but it cannot restore rights to a title that Amazon no longer offers in your location.
Could the change affect ad-free viewing?
Freevee programming was built around advertising, and free Prime Video programming can continue to show ads.
