You can host an Ubuntu encoder on Amazon EC2, feed it prerecorded videos, and send the output to YouTube Live. The pieces are straightforward; keeping them running continuously is your responsibility: you must configure the encoder and playlist, protect the stream key, monitor the stream, and account for EC2 and data-transfer costs. This guide gives a practical setup plan without implying that a particular EC2 size or command sequence has been tested.
What you need before launching EC2
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- An Ubuntu Server host in an AWS region, with enough CPU and memory for your chosen encoder settings and enough disk space for the playlist files.
- Prerecorded media you have the rights to stream, plus an encoder that can loop or sequence those files.
- A plan to keep the encoder process alive and to detect failures. EC2 hosting does not itself restart a failed encoder or guarantee a continuous YouTube broadcast.
Canonical describes standard Ubuntu on AWS as free to use, AWS-optimized, and supported for five years. Ubuntu Pro adds broader security coverage and kernel live patching; check the current image, region, and terms at Canonical’s Ubuntu on AWS page before choosing an edition.
Create the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a stream or select an existing one.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream. YouTube explains this workflow in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Store the key as a secret on the EC2 host and enter it only in the encoder configuration. Do not put a real key in a public script, screenshot, source repository, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Use RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts the stream connection to Google’s servers.
Choose an encoder profile YouTube can ingest
YouTube’s published encoder guidance is the baseline, not a guarantee that a given EC2 instance or network route can encode and upload reliably. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. Set audio and video parameters in the encoder you choose; exact labels vary by software and version. Test with representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health and messages before relying on the feed.

Set up Ubuntu and the playlist on EC2
The official guidance cited here does not prescribe an exact Ubuntu image, EC2 instance family, FFmpeg or OBS configuration, or service-manager recipe for this use. Treat the following as an implementation outline, not a tested deployment recipe; choose software and instance capacity based on the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, and playlist format.
- In the AWS console, launch an Ubuntu Server image in your intended region. Confirm the image version and instance availability for that region. Select capacity appropriate to the work: transcoding is more CPU-intensive than sending a compatible file without re-encoding.
- Configure network access narrowly. Allow administrative access only from addresses you trust, and avoid exposing encoder control interfaces publicly. Plan outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- Connect to the Ubuntu host, install and update the encoder you have selected using its current official instructions, and verify it can read your media files.
- Upload the playlist files to the host or otherwise make them available there. Check available disk space and file permissions. If the source files are valuable, keep a separate backup; local staging storage is optional, not a requirement for EC2 streaming.
- Configure the encoder with the YouTube server URL, protected stream key, selected codec, CBR bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. Use a playlist or loop option supported by that encoder.
- Start with a short test. Confirm that YouTube receives video and audio, review stream health, and verify that transitions between playlist items behave as intended.
- For unattended operation, arrange process supervision, startup after a host reboot, logs, and alerts using tools appropriate to your deployment. Test recovery deliberately. A running EC2 instance alone does not prove the encoder is healthy or the YouTube stream is live.
Plan for continuous operation—and YouTube’s limits
A 24/7 playlist is an operating goal, not a guarantee supplied by either EC2 or YouTube. The cited YouTube setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish what happens to longer sessions, a maximum session duration, or how a particular account behaves after a disconnect. Check the current Live Control Room behavior and plan monitoring and restart procedures rather than assuming a long session will archive or reconnect in a specific way.

Use media you have permission to broadcast. Copyright claims, restrictions, or other channel-level limitations can interrupt or prevent a stream; a playlist that loops technically is not necessarily eligible to remain live. YouTube’s encoder workflow and stream-health messages are the operational place to check the state of the live feed.
Estimate the EC2 cost for your region and runtime
There is no reliable universal monthly total: instance type, region, storage, transfer volume, and usage all matter. AWS says On-Demand instance usage accrues from launch until stop or termination. Its pricing information also identifies data transfer, EBS storage, and public IPv4 as potential cost components. Use the Amazon EC2 On-Demand pricing page and AWS Pricing Calculator for the actual configuration and region.
