Estimate MediaPackage’s live-stream charges as ingest volume × the regional ingest rate + origin/packaging volume × the regional origin/packaging rate. Ingest depends on the bitrate and number of input streams; origin and packaging depend on viewer traffic that misses the CDN cache. Encoding, CDN delivery and applicable transfer charges are separate parts of the bill.
AWS’s illustrative 24/7 linear-channel example totals $1.3505 per hour for MediaPackage ingest and origin/packaging in US East (N. Virginia), under its stated assumptions—not a general quote or a complete YouTube-streaming cost. Recalculate with your region, workload and current rates in the AWS Pricing Calculator.
What you need before estimating
Collect the inputs below for the actual workflow. Use averages over the full operating period, not peak-only audience figures.
- AWS Region and workflow: identify the region and MediaPackage version or workflow you plan to use.
- Incoming streams: count the MediaPackage input streams and record each stream’s bitrate ladder. For each input, sum the bitrates received by the channel.
- Operating hours: model the active hours. A continuous channel runs 24 hours per day, but state the number of billable hours assumed for the month rather than treating every month as identical.
- Audience: estimate average concurrent viewers across the day and the average bitrate they actually watch.
- Cache performance: estimate the CDN cache-hit ratio—or the fraction of viewer volume that reaches MediaPackage.
- Architecture: note whether delivery uses CloudFront or another CDN, and identify other AWS services involved.

How to calculate MediaPackage ingest and origin costs
1. Calculate ingest volume and cost
Ingest is charged by the data received. Convert the total input bitrate into GB per hour, multiply by the number of input streams, then multiply by active hours and the current regional ingest rate per GB:
- Ingest GB per hour = total input bitrate converted to GB per hour × number of input streams.
- Ingest cost = ingest GB per hour × active hours × current regional ingest price per GB.
In AWS’s pricing-page example, one input stream totaling 9.5 Mbps converts to 4.175 GB per hour using AWS’s stated conversion. Two redundant input streams double the ingest volume. At the example rate of $0.030 per GB in US East (N. Virginia), two streams cost 4.175 GB/h × 2 × $0.030 = $0.2505 per hour for ingest. This is an AWS example, not a guaranteed current rate or a quote for another region.

2. Calculate origin and packaging volume
Estimate the audience’s total watched video volume, then apply the portion that misses the CDN cache:
- Viewer GB = average watched bitrate × average concurrent viewers × hours, converted to GB.
- MediaPackage origin GB = viewer GB × (1 − CDN cache-hit ratio).
- Origin/packaging cost = MediaPackage origin GB × current regional origin/packaging rate per GB.
For its example, AWS assumes 1,000 average viewers watching at 2 Mbps, producing 878.91 GB per hour using its conversion. At a 97.5% CDN cache-hit ratio, 2.5% reaches MediaPackage: 878.91 × 0.025 = 21.97 GB per hour. At the example origin/packaging rate of $0.050 per GB, that is about $1.10 per hour. Together with the example ingest cost, AWS shows $0.2505 + $1.10 = $1.3505 per hour for ingest and origin/packaging. The result depends on AWS’s stated sample traffic and regional rate assumptions.

3. Keep units and rounding consistent
AWS’s pricing example uses 1024 in its bitrate-to-volume conversion. Use the same conversion throughout a calculation instead of mixing decimal and binary conversions. Keep intermediate values visible and round only at the end, so the estimate can be checked.
What the MediaPackage subtotal leaves out
The MediaPackage calculation is not the full cost of operating a YouTube stream. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS example separates MediaLive encoding, MediaPackage ingest, MediaPackage packaging/origination and CloudFront distribution. List applicable services and charges on separate lines rather than comparing a MediaPackage-only subtotal with an all-in delivery price.

- Encoding: include the encoder or encoding service used by the architecture.
- CDN delivery: account for CDN traffic separately. Caching can reduce the volume MediaPackage originates and packages, but CDN delivery remains its own cost.
- Data transfer: AWS says transfer charges can apply when output goes over the internet or through a CDN other than CloudFront.
- Other services: include storage and any other AWS services used by the specific design.
AWS recommends using a CDN such as CloudFront because cache hits lower the volume originated and packaged by MediaPackage. Do not treat this as eliminating CDN charges.

Do not assume that MediaPackage itself is the YouTube encoder or that a MediaPackage estimate proves a direct, end-to-end publishing design. YouTube’s guidance describes configuring an encoder with a YouTube stream URL and stream key for RTMP(S). YouTube also supports HLS ingest with specific segment, playlist and HTTPS requirements. The available guidance does not establish that MediaPackage alone can deliver directly to YouTube; confirm the protocol and any intermediate encoding or publishing component before costing the architecture.

See YouTube’s official guidance for encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions and HLS ingest requirements. HLS sends segments and may have higher latency than RTMP.
A practical estimate worksheet
- Choose the AWS Region and document the MediaPackage workflow.
- Sum the bitrate of each input stream and count redundant inputs.
- Convert input bitrate to ingest GB per hour; multiply by modeled active hours and the current regional ingest rate.
- Estimate average concurrent viewers and watched bitrate over the full day; convert the audience volume to GB for the same hours.
- Apply the cache-miss fraction to estimate MediaPackage origin GB, then multiply by the current regional origin/packaging rate.
- Add encoding, CDN delivery, storage, transfer and other applicable services as separate lines.
- Validate the inputs and current rates in the AWS Pricing Calculator.
For comparisons between architectures, hold audience, quality and operating hours constant. Compare input bitrate and redundancy, average concurrent audience and watched bitrate, cache ratio, region and current rates, and separate encoder/CDN/transfer charges. Those assumptions can change the total substantially.
Common estimating mistakes
- Using peak viewers as the all-day average: estimate average concurrent viewers across the modeled hours; a peak-only figure does not represent sustained volume.
- Ignoring redundant inputs: count every input stream MediaPackage receives when calculating ingest.
- Applying the cache-hit ratio to the wrong quantity: the fraction that reaches MediaPackage is one minus the cache-hit ratio.
- Calling the MediaPackage subtotal the full streaming bill: keep encoding, CDN delivery and applicable transfer or other service charges separate.
- Reusing sample rates as current prices: AWS’s example is tied to its assumptions and displayed rates; check the current regional values in the calculator.
- Assuming a publishing path without verifying it: confirm how the chosen components meet YouTube’s RTMP(S) or HLS ingest requirements before treating the design as an integrated architecture.
