CBS’s 48 Hours episode “The Plot to Eliminate Alyssa Burkett” examines the 2020 killing of the 24-year-old Texas mother, the investigation into her death, and the separate federal cases against Andrew Beard and Holly Elkins. CBS reports that Beard pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 43 years in federal prison; Elkins was convicted at trial and sentenced to two life terms. The evidence and roles described below are CBS’s account of the case, not a substitute for court records.

What happened to Alyssa Burkett?

On Oct. 2, 2020, Alyssa Burkett was killed outside the leasing office in Carrollton, Texas, where she worked. CBS reports that an attacker shot her through her car window, then stabbed and slashed her after she ran toward the office. She was 24. Burkett and Andrew Beard shared a daughter and had been involved in a custody dispute, according to CBS.

Beard surrendered to Carrollton police on Oct. 5, 2020, and was charged with murder, CBS reports. The subsequent federal cases addressed different defendants and legal paths.

What does the episode report about the investigation?

CBS describes detectives finding a tracking device beneath Burkett’s car. Investigators said batteries and charging equipment found at Beard’s home matched the device. The reporting also discusses a black Ford SUV, text messages between Beard and Elkins, and statements Beard later made to the FBI.

Those details are presented in CBS’s reporting as evidence investigators used to develop the case. CBS quotes Detective Jeremy Chevallier recalling, “At first it seemed like an open-and-shut case.” The investigation, the episode reports, led detectives to examine whether another person had a role beyond the person initially charged.

What role did CBS attribute to Holly Elkins?

CBS reports that investigators and prosecutors described Elkins as involved in the plan to kill Burkett. The account cites messages between Elkins and Beard and statements Beard made to the FBI. Sgt. Michael Harding told 48 Hours, “Andrew Beard was a monster, but he was Holly Elkins’ monster.” Chevallier characterized Elkins as directing Beard, saying, “She was the one running the show … she was telling him what he was gonna do …” These are the sources’ descriptions as reported by CBS.

How did the cases against Beard and Elkins end?

Defendant Legal path reported by CBS Outcome
Andrew Beard Pleaded guilty in June 2022 to cyberstalking using a dangerous weapon resulting in death. Sentenced in May 2023 to 43 years in federal prison.
Holly Elkins Arrested in July 2023 after returning from a trip abroad; tried before a federal jury. Convicted on all counts in April 2024 and sentenced on Aug. 15, 2024, to two life terms.

The outcomes should not be treated as identical findings: CBS reports that Beard pleaded guilty to a federal offense, while Elkins went to trial and was convicted by a jury. The article’s account does not replace the charging documents, judgments, or trial record.
