Across its three seasons, Squid Game turns familiar children’s games into lethal contests. Here are the games in story order, how each works, and what Korean cultural sources say about their traditional-play context. The fictional stakes and the games’ real-world histories are separate: cultural context does not prove a precise origin date for every game.
Before the competition: Ddakji
In Season 1, Episode 1, the Recruiter challenges Gi-hun to ddakji before offering him a place in the contest. Each player throws a folded paper tile at the other player’s tile on the ground, trying to flip it. The Recruiter turns the game into a wager.

Red Light, Green Light
Players move on “green light” and freeze on “red light,” aiming to cross the field within five minutes. Netflix’s guide says 456 players begin this contest and 255 are eliminated, leaving 201.

Dalgona
Each player chooses a stamped shape—circle, triangle, star, or umbrella—and has ten minutes to remove it from a honeycomb-sugar candy without cracking it, using a needle. Netflix reports 187 participants at the start of the round, 79 eliminations, and 108 survivors.

ReeRaa Gonggi Korean Game, Tossing Set (Korean Traditional Play Game) Jebi chagi Stone catching Biseokchigi Paeng-y DDAKJI & Family & Party, Easter Basket Stuffers, Christmas (1 Set)- Gonggi Stone catching game (Korean Knucklebones) :Start the game by throwing five gong-gis onto the floor. Pick one gong-gi and throw it into the air. While this gong-gi is in the air, grab one that’s on the floor before catching the one in the air. Repeat this to clear the floor.
- Jebi Kicks (Korean Hacky Sack) : Continuously kick ‘Jebi’ in the air without dropping. Whoever manages the most number of kicks wins.
- Paeng-y (Spinning Tops) : Prepare by winding a rope around the bottom of the top. Then in one swift movement, yank on the free end of the rope to make the top spin.
- Biseokchigi : Knock down the opponents’ Biseok(rocks) in 18 steps. Each step consists of stably resting the biseok on a body part and moving to opponent’s biseok to knock them down.
- DDAKJI : It's involves two playing tiles of different colors. The point of the game is to flip over the other player's tile, by hitting it with your tile from above. As easy as the rules are, it's actually quite a challenging game that takes a lot more skill than you would think - but no worries, I'll give you a tip later to maximize our chances of winning this pastime.

Tug-of-War
Teams of ten pull against one another on elevated platforms. Forty players remain after the round, according to Netflix.

Marbles
Partners choose a marble game to play. Each starts with ten marbles, and the goal is to take the other person’s marbles within 30 minutes. Seventeen players remain in the dorm afterward.

Glass Bridge
Players cross two elevated paths by choosing between tempered and breakable glass tiles. Three make it through as finalists.

Squid Game
The final contest adapts the playground game played on a squid-shaped court. It has offense and defense roles, and the attacker’s final objective is to reach the top of the court.

Bread and Lottery
In the Recruiter’s episode-one encounter, unhoused people must choose either bread or a scratch-off ticket; they cannot take both.

Rock, Paper, Scissors, Minus One—and Russian Roulette
Each player shows two hand shapes, then removes one. The remaining hand determines the round. The Recruiter adds Russian Roulette as a penalty for the loser. Netflix’s guide also describes a later round involving Gi-hun.

Korean Squid Traditional Play Game 5 Piece Set - Ddakji, Flying-Stone(Biseokchigi), Gong-gi, Spinning-Top(Paeng-y), Jegi- We played this game a lot in Korea. I'll write down some tips. You can also enjoy the game as a group with these tips. Gong-gi Tip: Gong-gi is fun when it's heavy. It's good to open the lid and fill it. You can also have fun using a smooth stone that's as round as possible in front of your house or by the river.
- Ddakji Tip: The paper we provide is not enough. Make smaller and bigger ones based on this. It's also good to make it thicker. It's more fun to play with various sizes.
- Flying-Stone (Biseokchigi) Tip: Our product is made of wood. If it doesn't stand up well, try making the bottom a little flat. Also, if you have a stone that can stand up near your house, you can enjoy the game with that.
- Spinning-Top (Paeng-y) Tip: Tie a knot at both ends of the rope. Wet the rope and leave a little water on it so that the rope winds well. When winding the rope around the top, wrap the top knot once to the left. Pull the rope down. Roll the bottom to the right. When spinning the top with your right hand, throw it to the left and pull it. When spinning it with your left hand, throw it to the right and pull it.
- Jegi Tip: The inner surface of the shoe has a larger surface area, so you can kick it more. You can also enjoy it with both feet, so practice a lot. It's really fun when you can freely move both feet.

The rules repeat the first season’s contest. Netflix reports that 91 players are eliminated in this round.

Six-legged Pentathlon
Five-person teams race through five mini-games in five minutes:

- Flying Stone: knock over a stone by throwing another stone at it.
- Gong-gi: toss and catch small pieces through a series of stages.
- Spinning Top: wrap and launch a top.
- Jegi: kick a shuttlecock-like object five times consecutively.
Netflix says 111 contestants leave the contest in this round, leaving 255.

Mingle
Contestants ride a carousel, then must form groups matching the number called and enter a room together. One hundred players remain afterward, according to Netflix.

Hide and Seek
Blue-team Hiders look for a hiding place or an exit through the maze. Red-team Seekers carry knives and must find a Hider. Netflix reports 35 eliminations and 25 players remaining.

Jump Rope
Contestants must cross a platform within 20 minutes while avoiding a large rotating metal rope operated by Young-hee and Chul-su.

Sky Squid Game
The contest takes place atop three towers shaped as a square, triangle, and circle. Players must eliminate another contestant to advance. Gi-hun sacrifices himself, leaving Jun-hee’s baby as the winner.
What is known about the games’ origins?
Korea.net, the Republic of Korea’s official site, describes featured games including ddakji, tug-of-war, marbles, dalgona, and squid game as accessible folk games that required little equipment or expense. It connects them with community culture and children’s play traditions. That is useful cultural context, but it does not establish a precise invention date for each game. The National Folk Museum of Korea’s folk encyclopedia explains that the squid game takes its name from its squid-shaped playing field. Its entry describes a two-team game with offense and defense, regional variations, and teammates supporting a player in danger. It also notes that the game was passed down over time and that the court’s shapes changed. This account supports a history of evolving play, not a single fixed version or verified inventor. These sources place several games in Korean folk and children’s play traditions. They do not document a precise, verified origin date for every game shown in the series. The show’s deadly versions are dramatic adaptations, not evidence that traditional play carried those stakes.

The mechanics invite a thematic reading, but this is interpretation rather than an explanation attributed to Netflix. Different rounds foreground different pressures:
- Control and precision: Red Light, Green Light rewards timing and restraint; Dalgona demands steady hands.
- Coordination: Tug-of-War and the Pentathlon make a team’s combined effort central.
- Trust and social choices: Marbles puts partners in direct competition; Mingle and Hide and Seek make group formation or searching consequential.
- Chance: Glass Bridge forces choices between uncertain paths.
- Strategy and rule interpretation: Squid Game and Sky Squid Game use their rules and objectives to shape who can advance.
The larger dramatic shift is from ordinary, recognizable rules to a setting where losing is fatal and survival is tied to a huge prize. That contrast makes trust, fairness, teamwork, chance, and self-preservation recurring questions. The meaning comes from how the contestants respond to the stakes in particular scenes, rather than from any one game carrying a universal message.
How many games are there?
Counting the games as Netflix’s three-season guide presents them, there are six main competition rounds in Season 1, five in Season 2, and three in Season 3. Ddakji appears before Season 1’s competition as a recruitment game. The Six-legged Pentathlon contains five mini-games, while Season 2’s Rock, Paper, Scissors, Minus One is paired with Russian Roulette in the Recruiter’s encounter.
