Full-series spoilers for Agatha All Along, including Episode 7 and the finale.
Agatha Harkness and Rio Vidal were lovers before the series begins. Their past survives as attraction, resentment and grief, complicated by Rio’s identity as Death. In the finale, their kiss is both the emotional culmination of their relationship and the moment Agatha uses her power against Death at the cost of her own life.
Were Agatha and Rio in love?
Yes. Their romance predates the events of Agatha All Along; it does not begin on the Witches’ Road. Creator and showrunner Jac Schaeffer explicitly described their connection as “their love affair” in a November 1, 2024 interview with TheWrap. The show does not give a full account of their time together, but it makes clear that the history between them is intimate and consequential.
That history shapes their present-day encounters. Schaeffer said the premiere confrontation was designed to feel charged and intimate, with the characters caught between fighting and attraction. The tension is not evidence of a new courtship so much as the return of feelings neither has put to rest.

Who is Rio Vidal, and why does her identity matter?
Rio is Death. The series reveals this in Episode 7: Lilia identifies her, and Agatha acknowledges the truth. The Los Angeles Times’ Episode 7 recap describes that reveal.
Rio’s role gives their breakup a larger dimension. Schaeffer described Death as part of an ongoing flow between death and life, with a neutrality akin to nature, rather than simply a destructive force. That framing makes Rio more than Agatha’s former partner turned adversary: Agatha’s personal rejection of her overlaps with a refusal to accept what Rio represents.

What caused the breakup and the resentment?
The series and Schaeffer’s explanations frame their conflict around betrayal as well as heartbreak. Agatha rejects Rio’s familiar form because it is the form she loved—and the form that betrayed her, Schaeffer told TheWrap. Their anger therefore carries the intimacy of a former relationship: each knows where the other is vulnerable, and attraction persists alongside resentment.
The show does not lay out every detail of the betrayal or provide a complete timeline of their relationship. What is established is the emotional shape of it: they loved each other, something broke that bond, and the rupture remains active when they meet again.

Why does Agatha kiss Rio in the finale?
The kiss is the culmination of this chapter of their romance, not a reconciliation that erases their history. Schaeffer said the creative team wanted the moment to be a kiss for the relationship’s beauty and to complete the arc of their love affair. She also called it the “kiss of death.”
It is fatal because Agatha uses her power against Death. Schaeffer explained that this use of Agatha’s power kills her. The kiss thus holds two meanings at once: an intimate gesture between former lovers and the mechanism by which Agatha meets her end.

What do we know about Agatha and Rio’s life before the series?
Very little is shown. The series does not establish how they met, how long they were together, or what their happier life looked like. Schaeffer said the writers discussed possibilities—including meeting over corpses and living together in a cottage—but described these as writers’ room ideas, not scenes written into the show. They should not be treated as confirmed events in the characters’ history.
The series also does not establish that Rio was Nicholas Scratch’s other parent. That claim goes beyond what is confirmed on screen.

How to read their relationship
Agatha and Rio’s story works as both a doomed romance and a confrontation between a person and the force she resists. Their desire and grief make the conflict personal; Rio’s nature makes it cosmic. The finale does not resolve every question about their past, but it closes this chapter by joining love, death and Agatha’s final choice in one moment.
