What are Alicia Silverstone’s best movies? Clueless is the clear starting point, but her filmography also includes a debut thriller, a major superhero role, romantic comedy, Shakespeare, and later offbeat dramas. This ranking weighs how central Silverstone is to each film, the movie’s cultural or critical standing, its range, and what it represents in her career. The order is an informed judgment, not a definitive consensus list.
1. Clueless (1995)
Silverstone’s signature role is Cher Horowitz, the confident Beverly Hills student whose attempts to improve other people’s lives include matchmaking and giving new classmate Tai a makeover. The movie’s comic engine is Cher’s gap between good intentions and imperfect judgment; Silverstone makes her both ridiculous and genuinely warm.

Writer-director Amy Heckerling loosely reworked Jane Austen’s Emma as a contemporary teen comedy. As Heckerling put it, “I tried to take all the things that were in this sort of pretty 1800s world and see what that would be like if it was in Beverly Hills.” Silverstone initially found Cher “materialistic and unappealing” and “really annoying,” she told Vogue in 2020; working on the character helped her find “all the heart and all the love.” That combination is why Cher still feels more than a collection of catchphrases.
Clueless is also the strongest intersection of Silverstone’s performance and the film’s lasting cultural standing. Rotten Tomatoes’ accessed page lists an 82% critics score and 76% audience score, figures that can change, while its critics consensus calls the movie “A funny and clever reshaping of Emma” that “offers a soft satire” of teen films and Beverly Hills glamour. The film page lists a 97-minute runtime and a U.S. gross of $56.2 million; the page does not specify the reporting year for that gross. (Rotten Tomatoes; film details)

2. The Crush (1993)
Silverstone’s feature-film debut is a psychological thriller, a sharp contrast with the teen-comedy image that would soon define her. She plays Adrienne Forrester, a teenager whose fixation on an older man turns threatening. The role gives her the center of a story built on charm curdling into menace.
The Cannes biography records two MTV Movie Awards for Silverstone’s performance: Best Breakthrough Performance and Best Villain. That early recognition makes The Crush more than a curiosity for viewers who know her chiefly from Clueless. (Festival de Cannes biography)
3. Blast from the Past (1999)
This romantic comedy shows Silverstone in a lighter, more openly affectionate register after the breakthrough years. The film follows a man raised in a fallout shelter who emerges into modern life; Silverstone plays a woman he meets on the outside. Its fish-out-of-water premise lets the performance balance warmth and bemusement rather than the sharp social satire of Clueless.
Rank #2
It earns a high place here because it captures a distinct post-Clueless phase and gives Silverstone a substantial part in a broad studio comedy. It is a useful next choice for someone who wants another approachable, character-led performance rather than another version of Cher. The credit is documented by Rotten Tomatoes and the Cannes biography. (Rotten Tomatoes filmography; Festival de Cannes biography)

4. The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017)
Silverstone’s appearance in Yorgos Lanthimos’s unsettling drama is a reminder that her filmography did not end with 1990s teen and studio comedies. The Cannes biography lists the film among her credits, as does Rotten Tomatoes. Its place in this ranking reflects the value of seeing her in a later, markedly different kind of project, rather than a claim that she has the largest role in the movie. (Rotten Tomatoes filmography; Festival de Cannes biography)
5. Love’s Labour’s Lost (2000)
Kenneth Branagh’s screen adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy places Silverstone in an ensemble tackling verse and musical elements, far from the contemporary slang and fashion of Clueless. It represents a deliberate change of theatrical and comic idiom in her early career. The role’s appeal is partly the contrast: viewers can watch her move from modern teen satire into a heightened adaptation of a stage classic. The Cannes biography and Rotten Tomatoes list the film among her credits. (Rotten Tomatoes filmography; Festival de Cannes biography)
Rank #3
6. Catfight (2016)
This later-career selection broadens the list beyond Silverstone’s best-known studio roles. Catfight is a dark comedy and a useful pick for a viewer interested in a more abrasive, adult comic mode. Silverstone’s inclusion here reflects genre variety and a career that continued to take on projects outside her early mainstream image. Rotten Tomatoes lists the film in her credits. (Rotten Tomatoes filmography)
7. Batman & Robin (1997)
Silverstone played Barbara Wilson, also known as Batgirl, in this large-scale superhero film. The movie is a prominent piece of her screen history even for viewers who rank it below her stronger comic or dramatic showcases. Its place on the list is about cultural visibility and the unusual career turn it represents: within two years of Clueless, Silverstone was part of a major Batman production.
The Cannes biography records her Batgirl role. (Festival de Cannes biography)
Rank #4
8. Beauty Shop (2005)
This ensemble comedy gives Silverstone a supporting role in a world centered on a neighborhood beauty salon. It belongs on a career-focused watchlist because it shows her in a group comedy rather than as the sole star, and adds a different setting and social texture to a filmography often reduced to Clueless. The Cannes biography and Rotten Tomatoes list it among her credits. (Rotten Tomatoes filmography; Festival de Cannes biography)

Released during Silverstone’s rapid rise after Clueless, this crime comedy paired her with a story built around a staged kidnapping that gets complicated. It is a worthwhile entry for tracing the period when Hollywood was testing how to position its new star across genres. Its lower ranking reflects the strength of the performances and career milestones above it, not a claim that every viewer will share the same preference.
Rotten Tomatoes lists Excess Baggage among her film credits. (Rotten Tomatoes filmography)

10. Bugonia (2025)
Silverstone’s 2025 credit makes this list a current watchlist rather than a tour that stops in the 1990s. Its inclusion recognizes the continuing span of her screen career; it is not presented as a consensus ranking or as a claim that her role is larger than the available evidence establishes. Rotten Tomatoes lists Bugonia among her credits. (Rotten Tomatoes filmography)
