The short answer: what happens in the Resident Evil Requiem ending?
Release Elpis is the longer ending generally treated as the intended or canonical continuation. Grace enters the password HOPE, obtains the antiviral Elpis, injects it into Leon, and helps defeat the mutated Victor Gideon. Leon survives and his infection is cured.
Destroy Elpis is the tragic alternate ending. Grace chooses the password or command associated with DESTRUCTION, triggering ARK’s self-destruct sequence. Zeno kills Leon, Elpis is lost before it can cure him, and Grace survives the immediate collapse. This route ends earlier and leaves more of the story unresolved.

What is Resident Evil Requiem?
Resident Evil Requiem is the ninth mainline Resident Evil game. It was released on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. The campaign alternates between two very different protagonists: FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and veteran DSO agent Leon S. Kennedy.
Grace’s sections emphasize investigation, vulnerability, and traditional survival horror. Leon’s chapters are more combat-focused, with heavier emphasis on weapons and direct confrontations with bio-organic threats. The contrast is central to the game’s design: Grace investigates the buried history behind the crisis while Leon fights through its most dangerous consequences.
The important characters
| Character | Role in the story |
|---|---|
| Grace Ashcroft | An FBI analyst investigating deaths and infections connected to Raccoon City. She is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft and becomes the person who decides the fate of Elpis. |
| Leon S. Kennedy | A returning DSO agent tracking the same biological crisis. Leon is infected with Virtus T syndrome, making the Elpis decision a matter of personal survival as well as global consequence. |
| Alyssa Ashcroft | Grace’s mother and the investigative reporter from Resident Evil Outbreak. Her earlier investigation into Umbrella founder Oswell Spencer provides crucial context for Grace’s case. |
| Oswell Spencer | The dead founder of Umbrella. His research, recordings, and final project drive the mystery even though he does not take part in the present-day events. |
| Victor Gideon | A Spencer-associated researcher who wants to claim Elpis and continue what he believes is Spencer’s final vision. He eventually uses the NE-γ Type parasite and becomes the final boss. |
| Zeno | A Connections operative involved in cloning and memory-transfer research. His resemblance to Albert Wesker is deliberate, and his knowledge of Grace’s identity is part of the late-game mystery. |
How Grace’s investigation begins
Grace starts by investigating a series of unexplained deaths and infections. The cases lead her to locations including the Wrenwood Hotel and the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center, where the victims show signs of persistent viral contamination rather than an entirely unrelated outbreak.
The investigation is personal from the beginning. Grace is Alyssa Ashcroft’s daughter, and Alyssa was murdered years earlier after pursuing information connected to Spencer and the Raccoon City disaster. Grace is not a hardened bioterrorism operative when the game begins. She is an inexperienced, frightened investigator trying to understand why old biological horrors are appearing again.
That distinction shapes Grace’s character arc. Her story is not just about surviving monsters. It is also about confronting the legacy inherited from her mother, the destruction associated with Raccoon City, and the possibility that her own identity has been manipulated by people trying to revive Spencer’s work.
Leon is investigating the same crisis
Leon follows a separate route into the outbreak. His chapters show a more experienced operative dealing directly with bio-organic threats, but the apparent difference between his mission and Grace’s investigation gradually disappears.
After Grace is abducted and drawn into the conspiracy surrounding the ARK facility, the two storylines converge. Grace and Leon discover that the new outbreak is linked to hidden research beneath the ruins of Raccoon City. The location is therefore more than a nostalgic return to a familiar setting: the city’s ruins contain the records, experiments, and unfinished ambitions that connect the present crisis to Umbrella’s past.

Late-game records connect the old Raccoon City institutions and orphanage to research involving children, Spencer’s blood, cloning, and memory transfer. Gideon and Zeno believe these records prove that Grace is uniquely important to the Elpis project.
Their interpretation is that Grace is the successful “original,” or a living biological and cognitive key needed to access or complete Elpis. This is one of the game’s largest identity twists, but it is also one of the places where Requiem intentionally withholds a completely clean explanation.
The evidence does not establish every detail with equal certainty. Gideon and Zeno may have constructed their plan from an incomplete or mistaken reading of Spencer’s research. The game leaves ambiguity over precisely what Spencer did to Grace, whether she was genuinely part of a clone program, and how much of her connection to Elpis is biological, cognitive, or simply the result of the antagonists’ assumptions.
The important point is that Gideon and Zeno define Grace as a tool. Their plan depends on the belief that she is necessary to unlock Spencer’s final project. Grace ultimately rejects that definition: whatever was done to her or written about her, she—not Spencer, Gideon, or Zeno—makes the decisive choice.

Leon’s infection and why the ending matters to him
Leon is not an unaffected investigator observing the outbreak from the outside. His condition worsens during the campaign, and the story identifies his persistent viral illness as Virtus T syndrome. His infection connects him directly to the biological crisis Grace is investigating.
This gives the final choice an immediate personal cost. Destroying Elpis prevents anyone from using Spencer’s project, but it also eliminates the possibility of curing Leon. Releasing Elpis risks trusting a project created by one of the series’ most dangerous figures, yet it may save Leon and reveal that Spencer’s final work is not what the antagonists believe it to be.
What is ARK?
The final act takes place in ARK, an Umbrella research facility hidden beneath the ruins of Raccoon City. ARK contains the Elpis project and the evidence needed to understand Spencer’s endgame.
Gideon and Zeno are not pursuing exactly the same objective. Gideon wants to obtain Elpis and continue what he believes is Spencer’s final vision. He thinks Elpis is a world-changing bioweapon capable of destabilizing society on a global scale. Zeno is more interested in the project’s strategic value and its usefulness to the Connections.

Gideon’s obsession with Spencer’s legacy becomes more important to him than cooperation with the Connections, and he turns against Zeno. Zeno is ultimately killed by Gideon. In the alternate Destroy Elpis route, however, Zeno kills Leon before the facility’s destruction, making the route’s tragedy especially direct.
The Elpis twist explained
The central revelation is that Elpis is not a mind-control weapon or a global-disorder device. Gideon has misunderstood it. Elpis is an antiviral agent designed to counter viral infections and reverse the effects of virus-based bioweapons.
Spencer created or safeguarded Elpis after recognizing the consequences of the biological arms race he helped create. His history makes that revelation morally uncomfortable. Spencer was responsible for Umbrella, human experimentation, and the development of biological weapons, so Grace has every reason to distrust any project carrying his name.
His recorded message calls Grace “hope.” In context, the word has two meanings. It describes Elpis as a possible answer to the damage caused by the virus research, but it also describes Grace’s ability to choose what happens next. She must decide whether Spencer’s final project represents genuine remorse or another attempt to control humanity through biological science.

Release Elpis ending: the longer and generally accepted ending
At the final ARK decision, Grace chooses to release Elpis and uses the password HOPE. Rather than immediately destroying the facility, this choice allows the story to continue into the final confrontation.

- In San Francisco, Jill Valentine is dealing with a zombie outbreak, Leon Kennedy is tracking a kidnapped DARPA scientist and Claire Redfield is investigating a monstrous fish. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they discover the trail of clues from their separate cases all converge on Alcatraz Island, where a new evil awaits their arrival.
Gideon then uses the NE-γ Type parasite and mutates into the final boss. The mutation turns his pursuit of Spencer’s legacy into the physical threat that Grace and Leon must overcome. Grace obtains Elpis during the crisis and injects it into Leon, treating his infection.
Grace and Leon survive the conclusion, and Gideon is defeated in the final battle. This route resolves the major questions about Elpis, gives Leon a future beyond the campaign, and completes Grace’s transformation from a frightened analyst into an active survivor capable of taking responsibility for the outcome.
Many guides describe Release Elpis as the true, good, or canonical ending because it contains the full final boss sequence, cures Leon, and resolves more of the central plot. However, there is an important qualification: the available material does not include a direct Capcom statement formally declaring this route canonical. “Generally treated as the intended or canonical ending” is more accurate than saying Capcom has officially confirmed it.
Destroy Elpis ending: the tragic alternate route
If Grace chooses to destroy Elpis, the ARK facility begins its self-destruct sequence. This route is commonly associated with the command or password DESTRUCTION. The facility collapses before the complete antiviral solution can be used.
Zeno kills Leon during this route, and Leon’s viral condition remains untreated. Grace survives the immediate conclusion, but she loses Leon and the opportunity to release Spencer’s project. The ending is substantially shorter and leaves more of the Elpis mythology unresolved.
Destroy Elpis is not a continuity error or a sequence that should be omitted from a complete spoiler guide. It is a playable alternate ending that demonstrates the cost of Grace’s distrust. Her decision is understandable: Spencer’s history makes destroying his final experiment seem like the safest option. But the choice also means rejecting the one thing capable of saving Leon.
Is Leon dead in Resident Evil Requiem?
Only in the Destroy Elpis ending. Leon dies when Zeno kills him on that route, and Elpis is destroyed before it can cure his infection.
Leon survives the Release Elpis route. Grace administers Elpis to him, his infection is treated, and the pair survive the final confrontation with Gideon. Because Release Elpis provides the more complete conclusion, it is the route most often treated as the intended continuation of Leon’s story.
What happens to Grace?
Grace completes the game’s central character arc. She begins as someone who is frightened by the investigation and burdened by her mother’s history. By the end, she can confront the physical outbreak, the manipulation surrounding her identity, and the legacy of Spencer without allowing any of those forces to determine who she is.
Her final decision is morally complicated rather than purely heroic. Releasing Elpis means trusting a project made by Spencer, a man whose work caused enormous suffering. Destroying it means refusing to risk another Spencer-linked catastrophe, but it also condemns Leon and leaves the world without a potential antiviral answer.

In the Release ending, Grace’s most important action is not simply surviving ARK. She chooses to preserve hope on her own terms and uses Elpis to save Leon.
What happens to Gideon and Zeno?
Zeno’s interest in Grace, cloning, and memory transfer reflects the Connections’ attempt to turn Spencer’s research into a strategic asset. His resemblance to Albert Wesker is part of the game’s deliberate misdirection and its broader interest in copied identities and inherited memory.
Gideon is more personally consumed by Spencer’s legacy. He believes Elpis is a weapon and wants to use it to reshape the world. When his objectives conflict with Zeno’s, Gideon kills him. Gideon then takes the NE-γ Type parasite, mutates, and becomes the final boss of the Release route.
Gideon’s defeat exposes the fundamental mistake behind the conspiracy: the researchers were fighting over a project whose true purpose they had misunderstood. Elpis was intended to undo the damage caused by viral weapons, not create a new form of global mind control.

Grace chooses what “hope” means
Spencer’s message tries to frame Grace as the answer to his unfinished work. The game complicates that idea by giving Grace the final agency. She is not valuable merely because of her blood, memories, or possible connection to the clone experiments. She matters because she can make a decision that the people around her cannot: she can acknowledge the danger of Spencer’s legacy without automatically surrendering to it.
Spencer’s apparent atonement remains uncomfortable
The Elpis reveal reframes Spencer’s final project as an attempt at atonement. That does not erase his earlier crimes or make his motives unquestionably selfless. The story deliberately leaves tension between Spencer’s established history and his late attempt to create an antiviral safeguard.
Elpis may be a genuine effort to repair some of the damage he caused, but it is still a project born from the same research culture that produced Umbrella’s biological weapons. Grace’s hesitation is therefore rational, not a simple failure to understand the evidence.
The alternate ending tests trust versus destruction
The two routes are built around Grace’s relationship with Spencer’s legacy. Release Elpis asks whether a dangerous invention can be used to repair the damage caused by its creator. Destroy Elpis prioritizes containment and refuses to gamble on Spencer’s intentions.
That makes the Release route more complete, but not necessarily morally effortless. The game’s preferred outcome is “hope” because it saves Leon and prevents Gideon from weaponizing Elpis. The Destroy route remains meaningful because it shows why Grace might reject that hope—and what the rejection costs.

How Resident Evil Requiem connects to the wider series
Requiem uses Raccoon City as the connective tissue between its new characters and the older games. Grace’s family history comes from Resident Evil Outbreak. Alyssa’s investigation connects to Spencer and Umbrella. The orphanage and ARK preserve the institutional history of Raccoon City, while Leon’s career and infection tie the new crisis to the series’ long-running bioterrorism storyline.
Best Value
- Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield reunite to investigate the connection between two zombie outbreaks in distant countries and uncover a threat that will shake the nation to its very core.
The ruins are therefore not just a setting callback. They represent the consequences of research that was never truly buried. Grace is investigating the aftermath of the original disaster, while Leon is confronting the biological legacy that continues to follow him.
Capcom has positioned the game as a major anniversary-era entry, and its post-launch plans indicate that it is intended to remain an important current installment. The Release ending’s survival of Leon also leaves the series with more room to continue his story than the alternate route does.
What DLC has been announced?
Additional post-launch content has been announced, including a new minigame and a story expansion in development. At the time covered by the available research, specific release dates, protagonists, plot details, and regional availability were not confirmed. Those details should not be treated as final until Capcom provides them.

| Choice | Immediate result | Leon’s fate | How the route is generally viewed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Release Elpis / HOPE | ARK remains active long enough for the final battle. Gideon mutates after using the NE-γ Type parasite and is defeated. | Leon survives and is cured when Grace injects him with Elpis. | The longer, more complete ending; generally treated as intended or canonical, though not formally confirmed by Capcom in the available material. |
| Destroy Elpis / DESTRUCTION | ARK begins self-destructing and collapses before Elpis can be used. | Zeno kills Leon, and his infection remains untreated. | A tragic alternate or bad ending that ends earlier and leaves more questions open. |
So the cleanest answer is: Release Elpis saves Leon and is the ending most players will regard as the main continuation. Destroy Elpis kills Leon and ends the story before the truth about Elpis can fully be used.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Elpis in Resident Evil Requiem?
Elpis is an antiviral agent designed to counter viral infections and reverse the effects of virus-based bioweapons. Gideon mistakenly believes it is a weapon capable of destabilizing the world.
Does Leon die in Resident Evil Requiem?
Leon survives if Grace releases Elpis using the HOPE choice. He is cured when Grace injects him with Elpis. Leon dies only in the Destroy Elpis ending, when Zeno kills him before ARK collapses.
Which Resident Evil Requiem ending is canon?
Release Elpis is generally treated as the intended or canonical ending because it is longer, cures Leon, and resolves more of the plot. However, the available material does not include a direct Capcom confirmation of that label.
What happens to Gideon and Zeno?
Gideon kills Zeno after their objectives diverge, then uses the NE-γ Type parasite and mutates into the final boss. In the Release route, Grace and Leon defeat him after Elpis’s true purpose is revealed.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Elpis is an antiviral, not the weapon Gideon believes it to be. Choose HOPE to release it, cure Leon, defeat the mutated Gideon, and reach the fuller ending. Choose DESTRUCTION to destroy ARK, lose Elpis, and see Zeno kill Leon. The Release route is generally treated as canonical, but that label should remain qualified unless Capcom formally confirms it.
