The wedding took place while MGM was promoting Taylor’s film Father of the Bride, making the marriage a major Hollywood publicity event as well as a personal milestone. The union was brief and troubled. Their divorce was granted on grounds of mental cruelty on January 29, 1951, less than nine months after the wedding.
2. Michael Wilding — 1952 to 1957
Taylor married British actor Michael Wilding on February 21, 1952. Wilding was approximately two decades older than Taylor, and the marriage lasted nearly five years.
They had two sons: Michael Howard Wilding and Christopher Edward Wilding. Taylor and Wilding divorced on January 26, 1957.
3. Mike Todd — 1957 to 1958
On February 2, 1957, Taylor married theater and film producer Mike Todd. Taylor was pregnant at the time of the wedding, and their daughter, Elizabeth “Liza” Frances Todd, was born in August 1957.
This was the only one of Taylor’s marriages that did not end in divorce. Todd died in a plane crash on March 22, 1958, leaving Taylor a widow. Because the marriage ended through Todd’s death rather than a legal separation or divorce, the accurate summary is that Taylor was divorced six times and widowed once.

4. Eddie Fisher — 1959 to 1964
Taylor married singer and actor Eddie Fisher on May 12, 1959. The relationship followed Fisher’s highly publicized split from actress Debbie Reynolds, who had been Taylor’s close friend.
The circumstances made the marriage one of the most closely watched Hollywood scandals of its era. Period media used sensational labels for Taylor, but those labels describe the tone of the coverage rather than an objective account of her character. Taylor and Fisher divorced in March 1964.
Taylor’s blended family also expanded during this period. She adopted Maria McKeown during her relationship with Fisher. After Taylor married Richard Burton, Burton subsequently adopted Maria.
5. Richard Burton — first marriage, 1964 to 1974
Taylor’s relationship with Welsh actor Richard Burton became the defining romance of her public life. The two met while making Cleopatra. Both were married to other people when their relationship began, and their affair quickly became an international media story.
Taylor and Burton married on March 15, 1964. Their first marriage lasted roughly a decade, ending in divorce on June 26, 1974.

The relationship was professionally intertwined as well as intensely public. Their screen partnership and celebrity status encouraged later romantic mythology, but the documented facts are more precise: they met during Cleopatra, married twice, divorced twice, and remained one of the most scrutinized couples in film history. Private motives and psychological explanations that are not supported by reliable documentation should not be treated as established fact.
6. Richard Burton — second marriage, 1975 to 1976
Taylor and Burton remarried in Botswana on October 10, 1975, approximately 16 months after their first divorce.
Their second marriage lasted less than a year. They divorced again on July 29, 1976, according to the biographical and archival date used here. Some secondary references list only July 1976 or differ over the exact legal date, but there is no ambiguity about the central fact: Burton was Taylor’s fifth husband and her seventh marriage partner because she married him twice.
7. John Warner — 1976 to 1982
Taylor married John Warner on December 4, 1976, only a few months after her second divorce from Burton. Warner was a Republican politician and former U.S. Navy secretary who later served as a United States senator from Virginia.
Taylor and Warner separated after about five years. Their divorce was granted in November 1982. Unlike the Burton marriages, this union did not produce a second marriage after the divorce.

Taylor’s eighth and final marriage was to Larry Fortensky, a construction worker whom she met at the Betty Ford Center.
They married on October 6, 1991, at Michael Jackson’s Neverland Ranch. The marriage ended in divorce, finalized on October 31, 1996. Fortensky was Taylor’s seventh and final husband.
Taylor’s marriages and her family
The marriage chronology is also a blended-family history. Taylor had two sons with Michael Wilding and a daughter, Liza Todd, with Mike Todd. She adopted Maria McKeown during her relationship with Eddie Fisher, and Maria was subsequently adopted by Richard Burton after Taylor and Burton married. Taylor and Burton also raised Liza Todd.
These family connections overlap several marriages, but they do not change the count: eight marriages, seven husbands.
Why people sometimes say Taylor had seven marriages
The mistake comes from counting husbands rather than marriage ceremonies. The seven men were:
