Squid Game Season 2 has three official arena rounds, plus several lethal or symbolic games played outside the scheduled competition. The arena games are Red Light, Green Light; the five-station Six-Legged Pentathlon; and Mingle. Bread and Lottery, Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One, and Russian Roulette belong to the Recruiter’s hunt for Gi-hun and his later confrontation with him.

Spoilers follow for all seven episodes.

Spoiler warning: This guide covers the games, eliminations, and major outcomes across all seven episodes of Squid Game Season 2.

Season 2 shows nine named game formats if the Pentathlon’s five stations are counted separately. But only three are scheduled arena rounds for the 456 contestants: Red Light, Green Light, Six-Legged Pentathlon, and Mingle. The other games—Bread and Lottery, Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One, and Russian Roulette—take place during the Recruiter’s search for Gi-hun or his confrontation with him.

That distinction matters. Bread and Lottery is a symbolic prelude, while Russian Roulette is a lethal chance-game sequence. Neither is an official round in the contestants’ competition. The Pentathlon is also one formal round, not five separate rounds, although it contains five distinct Korean childhood or folk games.

Every Season 2 game in order

Game Role in Season 2 Basic rule
Bread and Lottery Recruiter prelude Choose bread or a lottery ticket; participants cannot take both.
Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One Recruiter prelude Show two signs, remove one hand, and compare the remaining signs.
Russian Roulette Recruiter’s lethal chance game Players take turns pulling the trigger under the cylinder rules established in the scene.
Red Light, Green Light Official Round 1 Move on green light, stop on red light, and reach the finish within five minutes.
Six-Legged Pentathlon Official Round 2 Five contestants tied together complete five mini-games within five minutes.
Mingle Later official round Form groups matching the announced number and enter a room before the doors close.

1. Bread and Lottery

Bread and Lottery appears in Episode 1 as a staged social experiment by the Recruiter. It is not a traditional Korean children’s game and is not one of the scheduled arena rounds. Instead, it establishes Season 2’s interest in poverty, gambling, desperation, and the way systems can turn deprivation into entertainment.

How it works

The Recruiter buys 100 buns and 100 scratch-off lottery tickets. Each unhoused participant must choose one option:

  • Take a bun and eat it immediately; or
  • Take a lottery ticket and use a coin to scratch it.

No one may take both. Participants who choose a lottery ticket receive a coin and must return it after using it. When most people choose the possibility of a prize instead of certain food, the Recruiter destroys the leftover bread.

The scene’s central “rule” is therefore a forced choice between immediate nourishment and a remote chance of improvement. Its punishment is not an arena elimination but the destruction of the food that desperate people declined.

2. Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One

Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One adapts the familiar hand game into a two-hand version. The Recruiter uses it against Mr. Kim and Woo-seok, turning an ordinary game into a coercive demonstration.

Rules

  1. Both players simultaneously show rock, paper, or scissors with each hand.
  2. Each player removes one of their two hands.
  3. The remaining signs are compared using the normal hierarchy: rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock.
  4. The loser must immediately face the next lethal game: Russian Roulette.

The modification is simple, but the penalty changes the meaning of the game. The recognizable rules create a childlike surface, while the Recruiter’s arbitrary lethal consequence makes the encounter an instrument of domination rather than recreation.

3. Russian Roulette

Russian Roulette is another pre-arena sequence, not an official competition round. Season 2 presents two versions of the encounter, and the cylinder rules differ between them.

The Recruiter’s game with Mr. Kim and Woo-seok

In the earlier confrontation, the cylinder is reset after each draw. With one bullet and five empty chambers, each draw is presented as having a five-in-six chance of survival. The repeated reset makes each pull a separate gamble rather than a progressively narrowing sequence.

The Recruiter’s confrontation with Gi-hun

Later, the Recruiter and Gi-hun take turns pointing the gun at themselves and pulling the trigger. This time, the cylinder is spun once and is not reset between turns. Each empty chamber removed leaves fewer possibilities for the bullet, so the danger increases from turn to turn. By the sixth pull, firing is inevitable if neither player has already been hit.

Gi-hun survives the fifth pull. The Recruiter therefore faces the certain loaded chamber and kills himself. The scene is best classified as a lethal chance-game sequence rather than as one of the numbered Squid Game rounds.

4. Red Light, Green Light

Red Light, Green Light is the first official arena round after Gi-hun re-enters the competition. Its basic rules are the same as in Season 1, but Gi-hun’s knowledge of the real stakes gives him a crucial tactical advantage.

Rules

  • Contestants may move while Young-hee announces “green light.”
  • They must stop when she announces “red light.”
  • Any detected movement after the red-light command results in elimination.
  • Players have five minutes to reach the finish area.

Gi-hun tries to coach the other contestants through the panic, explaining what will happen before many of them understand that the weapons and surveillance are real. Netflix’s official Season 2 guide reports 91 eliminations in this round, compared with 255 in Season 1.

The game remains effective because its rule is immediately understandable: move, stop, and do not move again. The series adds the lethal surveillance system, but it does not need a complicated explanation to communicate the danger to either Korean or international viewers.

5. Six-Legged Pentathlon

The Six-Legged Pentathlon is Season 2’s second official arena round. It is one relay competition made up of five stations, not five separate elimination rounds.

Five contestants form a team and bind their legs together. Each member is assigned one station. The group must move through the course in a fixed sequence, and it cannot continue until the designated player completes the current task. The team has five minutes to finish the relay.

  • Brand: Squid Game
  • Character: Gi-hun

  • Type: Action Figure Sixth Scale Figure

Team rules and penalties

  • Each team contains five players.
  • Their legs are tied together, forcing them to advance as one unit.
  • Each player completes one assigned mini-game.
  • A team proceeds only when the current station is completed.
  • In some events, a miss forces the entire tied team to walk back to the equipment or starting position.
  • The complete relay must be finished within five minutes.

The round combines individual dexterity with collective responsibility. A player may fail at a task alone, but the time and physical cost are imposed on all five teammates. That design contrasts with the distrust and isolation of many other Squid Game challenges: competitors must coordinate, encourage one another, and rely on people they may otherwise regard as rivals.

Netflix’s guide reports 111 contestants eliminated during the Pentathlon and identifies Gi-hun and the disguised Front Man among those who survive. The reported contestant totals in official summaries should be treated as the source’s stated figures rather than recomputed from the elimination numbers, since the published counts do not form a perfectly consistent subtraction sequence.

The five Pentathlon mini-games

The five stations draw on Korean traditional or traditional-style play. The Season 2 versions are adaptations designed for a timed, lethal relay; they should not be treated as universal rulebooks for every Korean household or region.

Station 1: Ddakji

Ddakji is a Korean folded-paper tile game. The franchise introduced it to many viewers through the Recruiter’s game with Gi-hun in Season 1, and Season 2 places it at the first Pentathlon station.

One folded paper tile lies on the ground. The player throws another tile at it, attempting to flip the target over. In the Pentathlon, the assigned player must successfully flip the tile before the team can advance.

The relay changes the pressure. The Recruiter’s earlier version was a one-on-one wager, while the Pentathlon version places the same basic flipping objective under a shared five-minute clock. A player’s difficulty now delays four teammates as well.

Station 2: Flying Stone

Flying Stone is presented as a stone-throwing accuracy challenge. The available official description establishes how the Season 2 station works, but not a definitive historical invention date or single regional origin, so broader origin claims should be avoided.

The player stands behind a line and throws one stone at another, attempting to knock the target over. If the throw misses, the entire tied team must walk to the thrown stone, retrieve it, return to the starting position, and try again.

This is a deliberately simple task with a severe team penalty. Accuracy matters, but so does time management: every miss converts a short throw into a collective retrieval trip.

Station 3: Gong-gi

Gong-gi is a Korean dexterity game commonly played with five small stones or plastic pieces. In the Season 2 version, the player throws the pieces into the air and catches them through progressively more difficult stages. To finish, the five pieces are thrown together and caught on the back of the hand.

The Pentathlon uses the recognizable toss-and-catch core of gong-gi, but compresses it into a timed relay. Traditional gong-gi can have different stages and local or household conventions, so the sequence shown in the series is best described as the Season 2 version rather than the one universal form of the game.

Station 4: Spinning Top

Spinning-top play is a longstanding Korean folk pastime, often associated with traditional holiday play. In the Pentathlon, the player must complete a precise sequence:

  1. Wrap the cord around the top.
  2. Hold the top and cord correctly.
  3. Throw the top.
  4. Make it spin successfully.

If the attempt fails, the entire team must walk to where the top landed and restart. The station therefore tests procedural accuracy rather than merely asking the player to keep a top spinning. A small mistake creates a large shared cost.

Station 5: Jegi

Jegi is the shuttlecock-like object used in jegichagi, the traditional Korean kicking game. A jegi may be made from a coin wrapped in cloth or paper, with loose ends that help it flutter through the air. Traditional jegichagi involves keeping the object aloft with repeated kicks.

In Season 2, the assigned player must kick the jegi five consecutive times using the feet or ankles. Completing the five-kick sequence allows the team to continue to the finish.

That threshold is a relay adaptation. Traditional jegichagi can use different kicking styles, scoring systems, and formats, while the series selects a short, clearly measurable task that fits the Pentathlon’s five-minute limit.

6. Mingle

Mingle is the later formal game shown in Season 2, appearing in Episode 6. It is based on a Korean schoolyard or kindergarten group-forming game that creator Hwang Dong-hyuk remembered from childhood.

Rules

  1. Contestants stand on a rotating carousel surrounded by doors.
  2. When the carousel stops, a number is announced.
  3. Players must form groups containing exactly that number of people.
  4. The group must enter a room together.
  5. Players left outside, or in a room with the wrong number, are eliminated.
  6. The process repeats as several numbers are called.

The requirement is exact: a group with too few or too many people does not qualify. Contestants have only seconds to decide whom to include, exclude, rescue, or abandon. Mingle leaves 100 contestants remaining.

The game’s theme is conditional belonging. The Pentathlon rewards cooperation by making teammates physically dependent on one another. Mingle makes cooperation unstable: survival requires a group, but the announced number guarantees that some people must be left out whenever the available alliances do not divide evenly.

Does Season 2 show more games after Mingle?

No completed formal arena game follows Mingle in the season. The competition is interrupted by the attempted player uprising and its aftermath. Season 2 therefore ends before viewers see another completed scheduled round.

This is why lists that present additional games as completed Season 2 arena rounds are misleading. The season includes the Recruiter’s pre-arena games, three formal competition rounds, and the five stations inside the Pentathlon. It does not complete another arena challenge after Mingle.

Which games are traditional Korean games?

The safest distinction is between the cultural source of a game and the version dramatized by the series:

  • Ddakji: a Korean folded-paper tile game.
  • Gong-gi: a Korean children’s dexterity game played with small pieces.
  • Spinning top: a longstanding Korean folk pastime, often called paengichigi in reference to traditional top play.
  • Jegi/jegichagi: a Korean shuttlecock-like object and the kicking game played with it.
  • Red Light, Green Light: a familiar stop-and-go children’s game, presented through Young-hee’s commands.
  • Mingle: a group-forming schoolyard or kindergarten game remembered by the creator.
  • Flying Stone: a traditional-style stone accuracy challenge, though the available official material does not establish a single precise historical origin.

Netflix’s drama changes the stakes, timing, scoring, and sometimes the structure. A traditional game may have several regional or household versions, so the show’s rules should be labeled as the Season 2 adaptation.

Why Season 2 uses these games

Creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has described the appeal of simple games with immediate rules and consequences. Viewers do not need a long explanation to understand that movement during “red light” is dangerous, that a five-person relay depends on coordination, or that Mingle’s number must be matched exactly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The selection also creates contrasts:

  • Red Light, Green Light turns stillness and panic into mass elimination.
  • The Pentathlon temporarily requires competitors to trust and encourage one another.
  • Mingle makes social belonging a rapidly changing survival calculation.
  • Bread and Lottery frames poverty as a choice between certainty and speculation before the arena even begins.
  • Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One and Russian Roulette show how familiar games can become tools of coercion when the penalty is imposed by someone with power.

That mixture is central to Season 2. The games are easy to recognize, but their arrangements test different kinds of behavior: obedience, foresight, physical precision, teamwork, opportunism, and the willingness to abandon someone else to survive.

Complete Season 2 game order

  1. Bread and Lottery: the Recruiter’s forced choice between food and a lottery ticket.
  2. Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One: the Recruiter’s two-hand variation.
  3. Russian Roulette: the Recruiter’s lethal chance-game sequence with Mr. Kim, Woo-seok, and later Gi-hun.
  4. Red Light, Green Light: the first official arena round.
  5. Six-Legged Pentathlon: the second official round, containing Ddakji, Flying Stone, Gong-gi, Spinning Top, and Jegi.
  6. Mingle: the later official round based on exact-number group formation.

Counting the Pentathlon’s stations separately gives ten named game activities, but counting competition rounds gives three official arena games. Both totals can be correct as long as the distinction is stated clearly.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many official games are in Squid Game Season 2?

The official arena rounds are Red Light, Green Light; Six-Legged Pentathlon; and Mingle. The Pentathlon contains five mini-games, so it can look like five separate rounds even though it is one competition.

Are Bread and Lottery and Russian Roulette official Squid Game rounds?

The Recruiter’s pre-arena games are Bread and Lottery, Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One, and Russian Roulette. They occur outside the scheduled competition for the 456 contestants.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are the five games in the Season 2 Pentathlon?

The five stations are Ddakji, Flying Stone, Gong-gi, Spinning Top, and Jegi. Five contestants are tied together and must complete the relay within five minutes.

What are the rules of Mingle in Squid Game Season 2?

Mingle requires contestants to form groups matching an announced number and enter a room together. Groups with too many or too few people fail, and players left outside or in an incorrect group are eliminated.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Season 2’s official arena competition consists of Red Light, Green Light, the five-station Six-Legged Pentathlon, and Mingle—the last three counting the Pentathlon as one round. Bread and Lottery, Rock-Paper-Scissors: Minus One, and Russian Roulette are important Recruiter or Gi-hun sequences, but they are not scheduled arena rounds.
