For a first watch, use release order; for the events in the story world, start with the two Minions prequels.
Release order: the best choice for a first watch
Release order follows how audiences first met the characters and encountered the spin-off films. Universal’s official six-movie collection includes these four Despicable Me films and two Minions films.
- Despicable Me (2010)
- Despicable Me 2 (2013)
- Minions (2015)
- Despicable Me 3 (2017)
- Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022)
- Despicable Me 4 (2024)

Story chronology: the in-universe order
The two Minions films are prequels, so story chronology places them before Gru’s adult adventures. The release years remain in parentheses to make clear why this order differs from the one above.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is there a seventh released film?
The official six-movie collection establishes the core released list as four Despicable Me films and two Minions films. NBCUniversal’s July 12, 2024 announcement referred to a then-planned next film as Minions 3 and gave June 2027 as its planned release timing. A Universal Pictures Canada listing for Minions & Monsters appeared separately, but that listing alone does not establish the film’s current release status. For a released-film watch list, stick to the six titles above unless a newer official release notice confirms an addition.
